Horse riding & chemo

Hi

This may sound trivial but my wife, Debbbie gets so much pleasure out of horse riding that she wants to continue as much as possible. My thoughts are what Debbie wants then Debbie gets if it is at all possible!

The question is that during her low immunity week on the chemo is it safe for her to continue horse riding or is it too much of a risk that she may pick up an infection. She doesn't have to do any of the other work, just ride.

Let her ride! The only concern I would have is if she develops any bone mets. Of course, my standard disclaimer, I am not your Onc or part of your healing team. This disease takes enough things away, try not to let it take this too!

I had very low counts during chemo myself, and continued to work as a teacher at a preschool during treatment. It was what made me feel good. I just made sure to keep up on my shots (to boost my white count) and I did not change any diapers as my onc. said the risk of E-coli was there and dangerous. I would think that if she washed her hands and avoided certain exposures that she would be fine. I think that it is important to do what you enjoy and to feel as normal as possible during treatment. The fresh air will do her good as well!

I am now stage 4 and taught third grade in 98-99 when I was first diagnosed and had AC and Taxol. I was exposed to everything and never missed school because I was sick. I was on Navelbine from March until Dec. of this past year. I only missed the day in March after my first treatment. I felt as if I had a bad flu for about 3 days. I think it's important to live as normal a life as possible. That being said, I like Sushi, but I no longer eat raw fish. There are some things that we have to give up.

I hope Debbie rides as much as she wants. Just use hand sanitizers. Personally, I think it's wise for her to stay out of drug stores. That's where all the sick people are!! MJO

I'm envious.....Debbie probably should be sure her tetanus shot is up to date...horse barns can be places for little scratches, etc.
