EPA Board: Nonstick pans might contain carcinogen

I would normally put this in the submitted article section, but I wanted as many people as possible to see this (if they already haven't and this is a new news piece from 2/15/06). I also emailed the EPA for the current "List of Chemicals Evaluated for Carcinogenic Potential" and will post it when I get it.

I am aware of this. My question is and I have yet to get an answer is what do we use to cook in that would be safe????? Sandy

A couple months ago, after deciding to toss most of my non-stick frying pans, I started using my mom's old cast iron pans. (My mom passed away 12 years ago and I have a few of her things stored in my home). To make a long story short, it's just amazing how well these pans work! Heat spreads evenly, no stick, easy clean-up. They are heavy but that's the only drawback that I can think of.

I've been using stainless steel cookware for about a year now. I had already read that the non-stick surface might flake off onto the food you're cooking in it.

We RARELY have the need for non stick (though on Sun I make either pancakes, french toast or eggs), but while cleaning out my dads house, mom and I found some of the old cast iron pans my mom had and am going to salvage those. Take care.

Other studies have indicated some connection between certain types of cancer and high iron intakes...although, truth be told both my grandmothers cooked in cast iron their whole lives and never got cancer and lived till their 90's so it is really hard to say..., but at least IRON is a mineral...so far..., I have not heard what the RDI is for uh Teflon hee hee hee...
