I read a post that John submitted, and he said he felt that his wife being on fertility drugs may have caused the Breast Cancer.....made me think as I was on Clomid for 2 years and HCG shots for 1 year before becoming pregnant....then I had twins. Just curious how many on this board ever took fertility drugs and if in fact there may be a relationship.

Hi,

I am new to the group and reading through the postings. I took fertility meds to also get pregnant 11 years ago for several years and have also wondered if this was party the cause of my bc.
I was also blessed with twin girls because of my fertility treatments...but one has to wonder??

I am also Hormone neg.....but after all the HCG and Clomid (triple doses for a year), I wonder...I did have twin girls though, so no matter what, it was worth any risks.

My kids are all IVF babies, I had my oldest son in '99 and twin boys in '01. So I was on quite a few fertility meds throughout. Studies don't show any link between fertility drugs and breast cancer - if anything there is a slightly increased risk of ovarian cancer.

Interesting thought. Might explain why BC increases in younger women. I have a daughter, but never used fertility drugs.

and also have 2 year old twins. I am BRCA 2+ so I was pre-disposed, but I think the fertility drugs brought it on sooner than maybe it would have come. On my first IVF I argued with the OB to lower my meds because I was going to overstimulate and he only brought me down a bit, to which I totally overstimulated and my Estrogen levels were sky high! I think all that Estrogen and Progresterone floating around were not good, but as someone else said, my twins are amazing and I would not have done it any other way, just would have been much more on top of things when I felt the lump!

I did 4 cycles of clomid in 95, 3 cycles of follistim & progesterone in 98, and then another round of follistim in 2002 which ended up in the birth of my son. I was diagnosed when he was 18 months old. He is now 2 1/2. He is a great blessing to us, but I have felt the fertility drugs played a big part in developing breast cancer so early.

Very interesting to read your replies. I have always believed that my IVF treatment contributed to my BC. I did one stimulated round of IVF before my son was born 5 years ago. We then did another 3 stimulated when Mitchell was 2, and I was diagnosed when he was 2 1/2. All my doctors have been very careful with their wording, but each one has said that I was probably always destined to develop BC, however the IVF treatment probably brought in on much quicker. I know of another 3 women who have developed BC after IVF, and one who developed ovarian cancer.

In Aus, it has always bothered me that the only research has been done by the fertility clinics, and of course the results show that there is no link. I still don't understand why the clinics can't tell the patients to be more vigilant about their bodies, and to have regular mammograms.

I have often wondered thought that even if I had been told I had a 20% chance of developing BC after IVF treatment, I would have gone ahead anyway. Our son is the best thing that has ever happened to us, and I wouldn't give him back for anything.

Yes, I took fertility drugs for two years (triple doses), also had throyid disease and polycystic overaian disease. I have felt that all this hormone inbalance may have contributed to geeting bc. Kathie
