BMT successful!

So far it looks like the transplant has cleared me of MDS!! It has been a difficult road to say the least and the recovery is continuing with some graft versus host disease, but all in all my progress has been astounding! My sister donor was a good match.

Now the question is, did it erradicate breast cancer or will I get a recurrence before my new immune system is ready to fight for me.....
The doctors here are going to have a conference about whether I should be back on herceptin. The doctor said at this point because of liver toxicity it would be dangerous and out of the question to be on herceptin. I got the impression I may be one of very few cases that have been on herceptin and then had a stell cell transplant, and are unsure how to proceed with the potential of breast cancer. My sister's immune system may take a new look and find bc cells the enemy and fight them better than my immune system did

the doctor did indicate that if I get recurrence of bc soon there would be no recourse for treatment.......I would not survive. But that is a bridge I have not yet been asked to cross, so I need to put this in the hands of the doctors, and in the hands of God, Who has answered my prayers in the last two months way beyond my imagination!! I will keep trusting Him, and with hope, face another day!!!

Well I guess I am off the BMT forum, and the MDS forum and back to her2/neu breast cancer forum!!!!!!!!

Lola, I can almost see the tears of happiness roll down your face! A BIG congratulations on the transplant's success. You have been through way more than any one woman should have to go through. And if there was ever a wonderful attitude, you've got it.

Dear Lola,

Congratulations on getting through your BMT procedure. It's good to see you on the board again. Having gone through my stem cell procecure in 97 I can truly say that being in an isolation ward for over a month was the hardest thing I have had to endure in my 8+ year battle with this disease.

I got so terribly homesick, the days just seemed to drag on forever. Then when I finally was able to go home, a week later I spiked a fever and had to go back in the hospital for a week while they pumped me full of every antibiotic they could. They even had a person from the CDC trying to help figure out what was going on with me, but they never did. My fever eventually came down and I made a full recovery, but it was a nervous time for all of us.

Do be careful not to expose yourself to too many people and things in the early days. I don't know if that's what set me back, we will never know, but just better to be a little over cautious in my opinion.

It is so good to hear that you have made it through your transplant and that you feel up to writing on the HER2 website again. I remember when you first said you had to focus on the other cancer for awhile. I hope that you can put that past you for awhile. I am also hopeful that the transplant has beat down the breast cancer enough for your immune system to recover enough to get Herceptin when and if you need it.
I appreciate your words of wisdom to our group and it's such good news to hear from you.
