I forgot to mention that I am also on weekly herceptin- it has never caused swelling before- could that be a side effect?

Hi Patty,
Swollen ankles can sometimes indicate decreased heart function, so it's best not to wait too long before bringing it to your doctor's attention. Do you have a MUGA or ECHO done regularly?

In addition to decreased heart function also consider poor circulation. Are you less active due to fatique or nausea? Do you find that you are spending more time lying down? If so, you may have decreased circulation in your legs and that can cause swelling when you are sitting or standing for long periods. If you answered yes, try doing alot of stretching excercises to increase blood flow. This should help. But be sure to mention to problem to your onc to rule out anything more serious.

My ankles and legs swelled significantly in the fall and winter under the regimen of herceptin and taxol. There are/were mets to my liver. My oncologist said the cause of the swelling was multifactorial. As the treatment worked and my liver shrunk, so did the swelling. The nurse suggested support hose during that time, which did help, even though it was a hassle to put on! Feel better!
