I'm 54 yrs old and my orig dx was Jan 1996 ... had lumpectomy; 3 positive lymph nodes of 22 taken; CMF; & radiation. Treatment ended 9/96.
Recurrance March 03, 2 tumors in lungs, fluid in lungs and the famous "too many to count" tumors in the liver. Was treated w/ A/C and Taxatore... but the treatment almost did me in... Ended up in the hospital for 2 stays = 20 days in April and May 2003. In June of 2003 they about gave up and we had the QOL discussion, w/"months" to live. Switched to Herceptin.... and my CT in March 04 shows no sign of cancer.
I continue to take Herceptin and plan on it as long as my onc says and insurance will pay for it. You must BELIEVE and NEVER, EVER GIVE UP!
