nausea

My Mom finished her 4th chemo treatment last week. She was diagnosed Aug 2011 with her2 breast cancer that had moved to her bones in the spine. She still is having some back pain. The nausea/stomachaches are what seems to be keeping her down. She has been pretty positive to this point, but seems to be slipping in/out of depression due to the constant nausea. The oncologist told her she is taking the strongest anti-nausea pill they can prescribe here locally.

Any suggestions?

Wink Re: nausea

She can ask the doctor for a change in anti nausea medicine.
Ginger (fresh or dried and candied) helps keep nausea under control. Put some ginger in hot water and drink it like tea. Try some good quality ginger ale with real ginger in it. Adding ginger to cooked hot cereals is good too.
Eating more frequent smaller meals with less fat may help too.
Good luck.

Re: nausea/stomach ache

Jean,
Her current med is Bentyl for nausea. I think it is different than the original one she took.

Jean and Elaine-I just spoke with her. For lunch, she had a bowl of cereal. She does not feel like she is going to get sick, she said she does not feel like eating because her stomach "hurts". She is having daily bathroom visits so it is not constipation.

I did share the ginger idea with her and she said she had her of that before but has not tried it yet. She has at least 2 more chemos. She is due for her 5th one Tuesday. She said that always before the nausea/stomach aches went away about a week after chemo. This time, she has had the symptom ever since chemo.

Any other ideas?

Thanks in advance,
Kim

Re: nausea

Kim,
Elaine's suggestion of new meds is a good option.
Emend is a great anti med along with Kytril. Two very strong anti meds.
Emend is great to prevent delayed nausea that may occur several days after receiving chemo.

As far as her stomach. Is she eating a fiber cereal? This could be creating some of the problem. Does she eat any yogurt? Yogurt provides some natural bacteria for the stomach...along with a banana in the morning.

Maybe some boiled rice with steamed veggies for lunch.
Then at dinner some chicken or fish with rice again.

Is she having any heart burn also?
Jean

Re: nausea

She has crohn's disease also of the large intestine. It has been acting good for a couple of years now. She is not having symptoms with it. This is her stomach. She is not having heart burn.
