What to expect with Brain metastases

Hi, My mother-in-law was diagnosed last May with Stage III A breast cancer. She had a masectomy done followed by 6 chemo treatments and then 6 weeks of radiation. She was HER 2+ and was immediately put on Herceptin. This past June she was diagnosed with Brain metastases that are inoperable. She is now undergoing Whole brain radiation with dexamethasone 3x a day. I've talked to doctors and understand a little bit but I was really wanting to hear from other people who had experienced this and what to expect in the coming months. My mother-in-law agreed to treatment but wants absolutely no other information other then when to go for her appointments. My fiancee and I just feel so lost right now. If anyone wouldn't mind sharing their experience with me, we would very much appreciate it.

Re: What to expect with Brain metastases

Hi,

I do not know much about Brain Mets but I do know that they are treatable.

You may want to post this on the her2group section. I believe you will get more responses.

So sorry about your MIL's progression.

Re: What to expect with Brain metastases

EB1203,

Type 'Brain mets' and/or 'brain metastases', and 'whole brain radiation' in the 'Search' window and you will find previous discussions on the subject.

Also check the 'signatures' of those who have posted on the 'long-time survivors' or 'long-term survivor' threads, you will find many inspirational stories and miracles.

There are many people surviving even stage IV - it's now regarded as a 'chronic illness' in many cases.

I'm glad you are working diligently supporting your Mother-in-law. I lost mine 1 1/2 year ago to Alzheimer's and we've missed her dearly.
