Wanna be part of a group get well card to the founder of this site?

Hey guys, let's send a group get-well card with messages of encouragement to Christine Druther, the founder of this Her2 support site. I had her on my mind this morning. She had a stroke several months ago. If folks write messages in this thread , I will copy and paste them and put them in a get well card in a week and mail it to her. I just sent a PM to her daughter Danielle asking her to give us a health update and a current address for her Mom. I don't know if Christine is still recovering in the nursing home facility or not.

If you'd like to participate in this group get well card, please add your message to this thread BEFORE next Wednesday, September 19th--after 9/18 please just send any messages you'd like to her address that'll be added to this thread. I'm heading out of town today:a trip to Value Voters Summit in DC with my 18 yr old son who loves politics--it's his long-awaited- for H.S. graduation gift and I'm so THANKFUL to be well and able to do these things that would not have been possible a year ago. After I get back from my trip I'll send out our group card to Christine. I'll start it off--feel free to join right in if you'd like--everyone is welcome.
----------------------------------
Dear Christine,
We don't know each other but I've sure heard lovely things about you and I wanted to extend a great big "Thank you" for all your effort and hard work of both you and your late husband in putting together the Her2 Support web site. It is such a blessing and resource to so many of us battling this disease. Thanks to you for putting together this wonderful gathering place and to all those who keep it humming along smoothly.

I heard you had a stroke: I'm sorry about that and am lifting you in prayer right now. I'm a retired RN and know from caring for stroke patients that there is a great deal of hard work involved in recovering from a stroke. Cancer too, huh? Don't we all well know on that one. Remember to take just a day at a time--a moment at a time is sometimes enough. Keep aiming for every bit of progress you can and it'll pay off. I know this has got to be really hard. You can do this. We are rooting for ya, Christine!

Dear Christine -

It is almost the TEN YEAR ANNIVERSARY of this web site. YOU felt and understood the need for a site particularly dedicated to the HER2 overexpressed cancers.

At that time, before Herceptin was readily available, this was a bad diagnosis. You were able to respond to treatment for stage IV mets as well as brain mets. Sharing your story gave hope to so many of us, and we love and thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Your happy disposition, easy laughter, and breaking into song draw people to you. Keep on singing your favorite show tunes!

Sending you healing hugs.

Your adoring friend, StephN

Christine,

This website is such a lifeline for me. I have learned so much from women who log in and share their experiences. There is so much value in having a dedicated place for us Her 2 ladies to meet up and share our combined knowledge. I am so grateful that when in need I can post a question, or when needing encouragement I can ask for advice. Cheers to you for taking action and putting your talent to work and making this website possible. You are an amazing lady and I thank you for all you have done!

Diagnosed: June 2010, liver mets. ER-/PR+10%; HER2+++.
July 2010: Begin Taxol/Herceptin. Eliminate sugar from diet. No surgery or radiation.
January 2011: NED
April 2011: Progression in liver only. Other previous affected areas eradicated. Stop Taxol/Herceptin after 32 infusions.
May 2011: Brain MRI: clear.
May 2011: Begin Tykerb daily, Xeloda twice per day for one week on, one week off, and Herceptin.
November 2011: Progression in liver. All other tumors remain eradicated.
December 2011: BEGIN TRIAL #09-093 Taxol, MCC-DM1 (T-DM1), Perjeta.
Trial requires scans every six weeks, bloodwork and infusions weekly.
Brain MRI: clear.
January 2012: NED. Liver mets, good riddance!
March 2012: NED. Developed SMA (rare blood clot) in intestinal artery and loss of sight in right eye due to optical nerve neuropathy. Resolved when Taxol removed this month.
Continue Protocol of T-DM1 weekly and Perjeta every 3 weeks.
May 2012: NED.
June 2012: Brain MRI: clear.
June-December 2012: NED.
December 2012: TRIAL CONCLUDED; ENTER TRIAL EXTENSION #09-037. CT, Brain MRI, bone scan: clear. NED.
January-March 2013: NED.
June 2013: Brain MRI: clear. CEA upticking; CT shows new met on liver.
July 3, 2013: DISASTER STRIKES during liver ablation: sloppy surgeon cuts intercostal artery and I bleed out, lose 3.5 liters of blood, have major hemothorax, and collapsed lung requiring emergency resuscitative thoracotomy, lung surgery, rib rearrangement and cutting deep connective tissue, transfusion. Ablation incomplete. This life-saving procedure would end up causing me unforgiving pain with every movement I make, permanently, otherwise known as forever.
July 26, 2013: Try Navelbine/Herceptin. Body too weak after surgery and transfusion. Fever. CEA: Normal.
August 16, 2016: second dose Navelbine/Herceptin; CEA: Normal. Will skip doses. Watching and waiting.
September 2013: NED, Herceptin only. CEA: Normal. Started Arimidex.
October-November 2013: NED. Herceptin and Arimidex. CEA, CA125, 15-3: Normal.
December 2013: Something brewing. PET lights up on little spot on liver; CEA upward trend, just outside normal. PET and triphasic liver scan confirm Little Met. Restart Perjeta with Herceptin, stay on Arimidex. Genomic sequencing completed for future treatments, if necessary.
January 2014: Ablate Little Met on the 6th. Happy New Year.
March 2014: Brain MRI: clear. PET/CT reveal liver mets return; new lung mets. This is not funny.
March 2014: BEGIN TRIAL #10-005 A(11)-Temsirolimus plus Neratinib.
April 2014: Genomic testing indicated they could work, they did not. Very strange drug combo for me, felt weird.
April 2014: Started Navelbine and Herceptin. Needed something tried and true, but had significant progression.
June 2014: Doxil and Herceptin.
July 2014: Progression. Got nothing out of it. Brain: NED.
July 2014: Add integrative medical hematologist-oncologist to my team. Begin supplements. These are tumor-busting, immune system boosters. Add glutathione, lysine and taurine IV infusions every three weeks.
July 2014: Begin Gemzar, Herceptin & Perjeta. Happy.
August 2014: ECHO perfect.
January 2015: Begin weekly Vitamin D Analog infusions. 25 mcg. via port.
February 2015: CT: stable.
April 2015: Gem working, but not 100%. Looking into immunotherapy. Finally, treatments for the 21st century!
April 2015: Penn Medicine. Dendritic cell immunotherapy.

Hello Christine,
You and Joe created a caring, informative, loving family. Until you created it, we had nowhere to turn to for help and support and information. You had the vision and courage and determination to do it and you gave us hope and courage. Your example is an inspiration. I couldn't have managed without it. You made our lives better. My deepest gratitude and thanks,
Hugs and love

July 2010 IDC grade 3 stage 3 er-/pr-/her2+++, BRCA2
Skin mets 11/10
1/12/11 Surgery path - complete response
Rads 2/11-4/11
Liver mets 11/11 now stage IV
Xeloda & Tykerb 12/11
Allergic reaction to Tykerb 12/11
Xeloda only 12/11
Added herceptin January 2012
Progression February 2012.
Started Veliparib (parp inhibitor) trial 3/5/12.
4/30/12 Liver met shrunk in half! Praise Jesus!
6/18/12 another 25% shrinkage, down to @3x3. Thank you, God!
8/8/12 Brain MRI - clear! Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ!
8/27/12 Thank You, God - another 20% decrease in liver met! Now @ 3.2x1.9.
10/5/12 stable-ish
11/21/12 allergic reaction to carboplatin
12/10/12 stable & progression
12/31/12 liver ablation
2/6/13 ablation successful but new tiny mets in liver. May or not be cancer.
Another ablation scheduled 2/28/13. Cancelled.
2/20/13 started taxotere & herceptin. Pretty toxic. Oncologist says start tdm1 4/3/13. From her lips to God's ears. Praying for no allergic reactions/adverse side effects.
3/28/13 increase in liver mets - number & size
4/3/13 started TDM1
6/25/13 Praise God! Scan shows only one viable lesion and it's smaller.
10/8/13 MRI shows 1 large and two small tumors.
10/11/13 Ablation of tumors. It's in God's Hands.
10/23/13 Jesus and TDM1
12/19/13 Started trial of palbociclib & herceptin after scan showed growth of liver tumor and a questionable spot on rib.
2/6/14 CT scan - previous suspicious spot on rib probably damage from radiation - Praise God! MRI - over 200% growth in cancer in liver.
2/19/14 started Navelbine, Perjeta, & Herceptin combo.
5/2-5/4/14 hospitalized with very high liver function numbers, plus skin and eyes are yellow, plus urine is orange. Feel ok, so doctor not sure if liver failing due to cancer, chemo, or infection. Hospital gets numbers to go down and sends me home. MRI done in hospital reveals cancer shrinking - praise God!
5/6/14 - 5/8/14 hospitalized with no white blood cell count. Released when they go back up, @ 6 days after doctor gave me a neulasta shot.
5/16/14 - informed blood cultures done in hospital are back and that I contracted hepatitis e. Have to take ribavirin (anti-hep med) until liver function numbers are back to "normal" before re-starting chemo. Will probably go on veliparib and temodar this time.
5/26/14 - my birthday - GI doctor informed me that the hepatitis e was completely gone - I didn't even need the anti-viral meds! This is a miracle from God!
5/28/14 - started veliparib and temodar (compassionate use)
8/18/14 MRI shows 90% growth in liver tumors
8/20/14 start Perjeta, Herceptin, & Navelbine. Thanking & giving Glory to God for each moment.
9/22/14 - 9/24/14 Hospitalized with 102.2 fever and neutropenia
11/13/14 ER for high fever and fast heart rate. Got both down with IV antibiotic and fluids. Sent home same night. Thank You, Lord!
12/2/14 MRI shows progression in liver. Grateful to God that I still feel good.
12/11/14 Simulated SIR-spheres. Successful. Real thing (1st lobe) scheduled for the 23rd. Also starting Xeloda on 22nd for 2 weeks because it's synergistic with the spheres.
12/23/14 SIR-spheres in left lobe of liver. On Xeloda 12/22/14 - 1/4/15.
1/7/15 Receiving Perjeta & Herceptin while awaiting next course of action.
2/9/15 SIR-spheres in right lobe of liver. On Xeloda for 2 weeks (started 2/8). Still on Perjeta & Herceptin. Don't know what's next for me. :-)
3/25/15 Final read on MRI report - there are new and multiple lesions in both lobes of liver. Sigh. Praise God I've made it this far!
4/1/15 Started Gemzar & Herceptin. 1st week G&H, 2nd week G only, 3rd week off. Thank You, Lord, for this option.
4/15/15 Labcorp - liver enzymes in 200's. Appointment 4/22 with oncologist to discuss. Also, "radiation recall" in previously treated area? Very itchy. Need to discuss.
4/22/15 Enzymes came down. Received reduced dose of Gemzar only. No herceptin. Will get labs at lapcorp next two weeks since taking break for vacation purposes. Treat radiation area.
5/9/15 ER for severe abdominal pain. Constipation. Sent home with meds and advice to follow up with oncologist regarding jaundice and bilirubin.
5/11/15 Hospitalized for rising bilirubin and jaundice. CT scan reveals larger and more constricting tumors in liver.
5/13/15 Met with my oncologist. Bilirubin came down. If still down by Monday, I'll get chemo. If not, than I guess I'll see you all in Heaven. Praise God. Please pray, pray, pray.
5/18/15 Bilirubin jumped up. Trying lowered dose of Ixempra, with Herceptin. Oncologist is surprised that I'm functioning so well, given the high bilirubin. I have anywhere from 2 weeks - 2 months to live.

Dear Christine,

You and your dear husband Joe created a lifeline for Her2+ patients. This site not only supplies the latest developments in breast cancer treatment, but has become a place where friends can gather for much needed moral support - exactly as I am sure you intended.

Blessings to you and your family.

Re: Wanna be part of a group get well card to the founder of this site?

Dear Christine,

Words escape me as I try to express what you, Joe, and this site have meant for me. I wish I could give you a hug and shower you with smiles and happiness. It was here that I first came online with my story when I was in shock and desperate wondering whether I'd be able to see my kids grow up. Your story, your encouragement, and the community you and Joe have created have been my strength throughout my journey. I honestly don't know what I would do without it. I'm eternally grateful for all that you and Joe have done for us. Please know that you have a powerful army of men and women cheering for you and wishing you many happy and healthy days ahead.

Thank you,

Marcia

Re: Wanna be part of a group get well card to the founder of this site?

Hi Christine,

I've joined the Her2support site at least twice. Within a week after I had set up the user name and password in 2007, I forgot both of them and had to set up another one after consulting Joe. After a while I remembered having visited the site in 2003 briefly after my first BC diagnosis/surgery.

This is the only place where people understand 'chemo brain' But none of us will forget what you and Joe have done for the Her2 sisters/brothers...

Going through rehab requires a lot of energy and determination. Whenever you feel tired/frustrated, think of all your friends here who love you and are rooting for you ...

Re: Wanna be part of a group get well card to the founder of this site?

Dear Christine,

I am in awe of the foresight and hard work that it must have taken to establish the Her2 support site. I can't thank you enough as it has been an emotional life line for me for the past 5 years.

Because of this site, I am knowledgeable and aggressive with my treatment. Something that I know has extended my life to allow me precious moments with my family.

Thank you for enabeling me to have those moments.....Love, Lori

Dear Christine, aren't all these letters amazing?? Imagine the lives you and Joe have changed. I think the measure of a person is the good they have done in the world and by that standard, you have made a huge difference! Thank you from the bottom of my heart! Keep the faith. Bonnie

Re: Wanna be part of a group get well card to the founder of this site?

Hi guys,

We just got back today from a marvelous time in DC. Wow, was that ever fun!

Thanks to all who contributed to the group Get Well card for Christine. I'll be copying and pasting all the messages to her and sending them in a cheery card on 9/19. Feel free to join right in on this group card by 9/18 if you'd like to and haven't already.

I didn't hear back from her daughter Danielle re: my inquiry a week ago about a health update and asking for confirmation that this address below that Sheila posted in July is still current. If anyone knows, please chime in. If I don't hear anything, I'll just use this address and the nursing home can forward it to her if she's back home.

Thx,

Paula

Re: Wanna be part of a group get well card to the founder of this site?

Hi Christine,

I don't think we've chatted before but I have had a few chats with Joe in the past, I was so happy to find this website seven years ago when I was dx as we had nothing like this in Ireland! Thank you so much for bringing so much education and information into my life which helped me make what I think are the right decisions on my care and thank you most of all for bringing so many new and wonderful friends into my life.
Sending my good wishes to you and lots of Irish luck for your good health! xx

Re: Wanna be part of a group get well card to the founder of this site?

Christine,

You already know That you have impacted and inspired, and given hope to thousands of people with your story, this website that you and Joe created, and your dedication to having us be " the best informed group of her2 cancer fighters in the world" to paraphrase Joe.

You are so loved by so many - by us of course, but also countless researchers, doctors, industry people and advocates.

I miss the days when we all would be at San Antonio and Joe would call out "Chris!" and we would both answer.

Wishing you all the best

Chris(y)
