Are antioxidant supplements contraindicated?

During the haze and fleecing moment at the first discussion with my onc, I vaguely remembered his advice of not taking concentrated soy extract. Then he said something about vitamin C. I couldn't recall whether anti oxidants are okay or contraindicated.

I am taking Femara at the present time. Do any of you have any idea whether anti-oxidants, particularly glutathione peroxide, are acceptable for b.c. patients taking AI inhibitors?

I would like to try these for a skin condition. Thanks.

I was told not to take them while doing chemo...I think Dr's have different opinions on this, or maybe don't know patients are taking them.

My onc has said not to take mega doses of anything, especially while on chemo. He feels whole foods that are high in vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants are ok, but that evidence is showing that anti-oxidant supplements while on chemo can actually help the cancer cells rejuvinate themselves, just as a normal cell will be helped. So, I don't take anything without running it by him, as I'm always on chemo. The supplements he's ok'd for me include: acidophilus, melatonin, Co-Q10(100 mg), B6(50 mg 2 x's a day), calcium, magnesium, and Vit. D.
Don't know if this applies to hormonals, but you should ask your onc. Some here go to nutritionists for counsel while on treatment, just would need to find one who specializes in BC patients.

Herceptin has served as the "Backbone" of my treatment strategy for over 6 years, giving me great quality of life. In 2005, I was privileged to participate in the University of Washington/Seattle HER2 Vaccine Trial.

Hi Ann, I distinctly remember Nikki asking her doctor about taking anti-oxidants. He said that she should not take megadoses because it would be contraindicative. Something about trying to oxidize the cancer cells, I think, not sure. A few months later, he was approached to head a national cancer study and left the practice. He was renowned in the field and stayed current. He was the one who pointed Nikki in the direction of the Taxol/Lapatinib/Herceptin clinical trials. I hope this helps. Love, Bill

I think it works this way. Chemo drugs (ac's etc - not herceptin) are basically very powerful oxidants - they kill growing cells. The concern is that by taking powerful anti-oxidants (to try and help heal our remaining cells like our livers by protecting them from oxidants, to help them through chemo) we are likely to cause the anti-oxidants to cancel out the oxidants (like chemo) and make chemo less effective on the cells we are wanting to have killed.

My decision was just to eat healthily, but not do juicing or anything unusually high in antioxidants, till chemo was over. I wasn't gonna go through that for nothing...

Hope you are all well.

  • Diagnosed 3 Jan 2007, Stage IIb, Mastectomy and axillary clearance 10 Jan 07, 6 of 19 nodes affected, multi-focal cancer, HER2 positive. Second mastectomy (prophylactic). Chemo - AC 3 months, Taxol 3 months - then radiation 5 weeks.
  • Aug 2011 - Diagnosed with Stage IV mets to lung, sternum and 12 or so thoracic nodes - Rads to Sternum, then weekly abraxane and herceptin for 12 weeks.
  • May 2012- good scans - all nodes still about normal size, hole in sternum repairing, lung tumour 'obliterated'.
Ongoing herceptin every 3 weeks. Bloods still all good! Life good!
  • March 2013 - recurrence - tumours in lungs and mediastinum (coughing up blood) - immediate radiation treatment to right lung and mediastinum, still on Herceptin, and 3 months of Vinoralbine - stable for a little while!
  • Coughing and breathlessness started again September 2013, treated as radiation-induced fibrosis (which can be seen on scans - albeit stable). ie puffers, steroids
  • January 2014 - cough becomes bloody again, scans show big mediastinal tumour wrapped around and choking the life out of my right main bronchus, radiation deemed off limits as my lungs are hypersensitive to radiation (measured by existing damage from 2013) .....................- ie I am in the 5% of people likely to suffer severe radiation damage to the lungs that they warn you about before starting treatment! (so special! :) )
  • Started chemo Feb 2014 - continuing Herceptin (continuous since Aug 2011), with Carboplatin and Gemcitabine. Discontinued Gemcitabine because of se's. Starting cycle 5 Herc/Carbo 5 May 2014.
  • Meantime.....coughing and breathlessness increased to SCARY levels with racing heartbeat that won't slow down, breath that won't come back, even just walking to the bathroom or up 3 or 4 steps.
  • ICU from May 5 2014, collapsed right lung due to tumour, small pulmonary embolism (left), tumours growing in mediastinum left and right, dvt lower right leg
  • Plan seems to be bronchoscope next week to see if tumour can be lasered and stent inserted in right bronchus to reopen air access to lower parts of right lung. If that is successful might be able to have brachytherapy to worst tumour, otherwise no more options for external radiotherapy.
