Re: Study on Olive oil for BC prevention

Thanks for updating the link for this article, Hopeful.

I hope they learn a LOT about the use of olive oil. In trying to "think outside the box", some years ago I wondered out loud whether or not using a sterilized form of olive oil directly to the tissues of the breast at time of surgery would help to reduce recurrences, sort of like germicidals do for "germs". Who knows.... !!!Sometimes the simple answers come closer to the mark than the most toxic ones....

Study on Olive oil for BC prevention

Are we talking extra virgin olive oil or olive oil? Which one is recommended for this use?

Re: Study on Olive oil for BC prevention

I read somewhere on the net that present research says it cannot be confirmed that anti oxidants (as in olve oil) confine cancer cells

Re: Study on Olive oil for BC prevention

Pibikay,
Antioxidants and phytochemicals appear to play a vital role in disease prevention, including breast cancer prevention and prevention of recurrence. Generally speaking it is wise to consume a diet with a good variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains with a variety of colors. It is important to acknowledge that antioxidants can sometimes interfere with certain conventional medications (i.e. chemotherapy, Tamoxifen) or even the disease itself (i.e. debate regarding soy/breast cancer). In regards to olive oil itself there is some evidence that a Mediterranean-type diet may provide some protection against breast cancer but that is not a certainty. A moderate amount of olive oil is likely a beneficial component of an anti-breast cancer diet.

Re: Study on Olive oil for BC prevention

Found this abstract on the subject - seems to serve a good basis (literature review) for the proposed study that Hopeful has mentioned:

Breast. 2010 Jun 7. [Epub ahead of print]
Hormonal and metabolic modulation through nutrition: Towards a primary prevention of breast cancer.

Abstract

Breast cancer (BC) is a polygenic and multifactorial disease for which estrogens have been recognized as the main risk factor, and for which lifestyle plays a key role. Previous epidemiologic cancer research performed in Uruguayan population delimited its dietary and anthropometric profiles. Recognizing the difficulty for universalizing a nutritional basis for prevention due to different eating patterns among regions and countries, we summarize the existent knowledge linking nutrition, estrogens, metabolism and BC. As an attempt towards primary prevention of BC, we present recommendations mainly based on country-specific research findings and modifiable putative risk and protective factors, proposing to modify the intake of meats and other fatty foods - especially sources of Omega-6 and Omega-3 fatty acids - adding olive oil, selected vegetables, citrus fruits and working towards adequate body fat/muscle proportions. From a medical and ethical viewpoint, it is justified to recommend certain nutritional changes to women, because no adverse side effects are expected to occur. Copyright © 2010 Elsevier Ltd.
