Mastectomy done...Twice!!

Hello to all of my sisters on the board. My mastectomy happened on the 8th of Nov (Thurs) as planned...however the 2 night stay ended up being 5 as I had to go back to surgery the following Sunday and have the incision opened and drained as I was swollen after the surgery on Thursday. I was put on a blood thinning drug the Wed before surgery and given 2 shots after to prevent a P. E. that I experienced 4 years ago due to a non cancer surgery. I am told that this probably contributed to the blood thinning and swelling in the incision. I was put back to sleep Sunday and my doc partially reopened the site and took care of the problem. He said that was the price to pay for the blood thinner but he would rather have that then a blood clot in the lung. This situation caused me to look down at the scar line as so many hospital personel were checking it. Took some of the shock value away. My thanks to all who shared comments on this surgery, with or without reconstruction. Your comments helped me so much. A special thanks to Pink Girl who wrote me and shared several times.... all of your giving has helped me cope for sure!!

Thumbs up welcome home...

Hi Ceese
Happy to hear you've got the surgery behind you. Sorry about all those
"extras" with the blood thinners etc. but it sounds like it was all for the
best. You are way ahead of me in having looked at the incisions. I was
a major wimp and didn't look at myself for a week.

Get lots of rest, and do all the exercises you're supposed to do. They
make a big difference in getting the use of your arms and shoulder back.

Keep us posted.
