An effort to build a cancer community online has been launched at www.wikicancer.org . The wiki philosophy puts faith in the community of interested participants to “police” postings. Anyone can post an article – anyone can edit a posted article. The wikipedia site ran into some nasty trouble last year when editor/publisher John Seigenthaler (a former aide to Robert F. Kennedy) was named (erroneously) as a suspect in the deaths of JFK and RFK in an article. Wikipedia instituted changes in its “who can publish/edit” policy. wikiCancer may turn out to be an excellent website for patients and their loved ones. It already has some wonderful resources posted (like questions to ask your insurance company) but just remember – medical information on any website – especially one which allows anonymous postings – cannot substitute for the advice of your doctors. There’s no guarantee that the information is true.
