osteoporosis dx

I just got the results of my first bone density test yesterday. I was told I have osteoporosis. I am 50. My onc wants me to see an endocrinologist to see what my options are. I am waiting to get the results of a vitamin D test also and for the referral. Has anyone else gotten this dx and what can be done to help the situation? I already get 2-4 servings a day of calcium in my diet and I exercise 3-4 times a week (resistance/weight bearing).

Re: osteoporosis dx

You are doing what you can from a lifestyle standpoint from what you write. There are a few different pharmacologic options for treatment of osteoporosis. Biphosphonates being the most common, oral medication, but there are yearly injectable/infusion as well. Usually not needed for life but for a few years to build back up the bones. Keep going with the exercise, calcium, add vit D3 1000-2000iu and see what the endocrinologist suggests for rebuilding your bones. Good luck

Re: osteoporosis dx

I, too have the same diagnosis. I tried Fosamax for 6 weeks. I was very allegoric to it......... fever, extreme bone pain, eye pain, and flu like symptoms. I was referred to an Osteoporosis Research Center in Albuquerque, NM. I met with the director, Dr. Lance Rudolph. He recommended prolia. I have now been approved by my insurance for prolia which is a shot every 6 months. I haven't had an injection yet, because I just got the blood work and 24 hr urine test done. Hopefully, I will not have reactions to prolia.
Good luck with your treatment...... keep us informed.

Re: osteoporosis dx

After lifetime with osteoporosis...and years of bisphosphonates...I had great success with FORTEO. A daily injection...2 years...followed by RECLAST once a year. Achieved an 18% improvement in bone density. My Dr. felt that was awesome!!
