~Mighty Oak's Brain Results~10-30-2008
(from phone call to nurse)
Well, the 10 mets were successfully treated by Gamma Knife. I know no specifics since I have not read these results nor sat and talked to doctor yet.
We did discover one more met in the frontal lobe. I choked back tears since we was not aiming for this news. His nurse gave sympathy and I told her not to feel bad but be happy, this news just makes us know what to do.
The met is 5mm and will again be treated with Gamma Knife. I think we will have to start Tykerb and Herceptin again. Seperately they failed him but together we are hoping for a miracle.
I am already depressed and I guess in the back of my head I knew this is how it may happen. I know I have not been as active and supportive as I normally am here. I have been following you all each day. I may have not posted in threads but I have celebrated your birthdays, the reoccurances, the trials and tribulations. I love you all.
Now I must dry my eyes and break the news to Ed. Wish me luck because there is no easy way to do this.>>Believe51

Our prayers are with you and Ed. I know there is no way to break the bad news to Ed, but the fact that the gamma knife worked on the other mets is encouraging. Please take care of yourself, I know this has been a very long and hard battle for you.

Fitted for compression sleeve July 16, 2008
Started the first of two TCH infusions August 14, 2008
Done with chemo and now a member of the blue dot club 9/17/08
Starting radiation October 1, 2008

Breaking news to a patient is what the DOCTOR is supposed to do!! Not the patient's wife.
Can't believe they have not scheduled him to come in this week.
What a bunch of slackers - JMHO.
Marie, you should have demanded an appointment be made within a few days of the scan if they did not do that voluntarily.
The doctor is supposed to give the results and have a plan to discuss at the same time. So sorry they put you through this.
Mighty Oak will be just fine if they ever get him tended to ...

Found suspicious lump 9/2000
Lumpectomy, then node dissection and port placement
Stage IIB, 8 pos nodes of 18, Grade 3, ER & PR -
Adriamycin 12 weekly, taxotere 4 rounds
36 rads - very little burning
3 mos after rads liver full of tumors, Stage IV Jan 2002, one spot on sternum
Weekly Taxol, Navelbine, Herceptin for 27 rounds to NED!
2003 & 2004 no active disease - 3 weekly Herceptin + Zometa
Jan 2005 two mets to brain - Gamma Knife on Jan 18
All clear until treated cerebellum spot showing activity on Jan 2006 brain MRI & brain PET
Brain surgery on Feb 9, 2006 - no cancer, 100% radiation necrosis - tumor was still dying
Continue as NED while on Herceptin & quarterly Zometa
Fall-2006 - off Zometa - watching one small brain spot (scar?)
2007 - spot/scar in brain stable - finished anticoagulation therapy for clot along my port-a-catheter - 3 angioplasties to unblock vena cava
2008 - Brain and body still NED! Port removed and scans in Dec.
Dec 2008 - stop Herceptin - Vaccine Trial at U of W begun in Oct. of 2011
STILL NED everywhere in Feb 2014 - on wing & prayer
7/14 - Started twice yearly Zometa for my bones
Jan. 2015 checkup still shows NED
2015 Neuropathy in feet - otherwise all OK - still NED.
Same news for 2016 and all of 2017.
Nov of 2017 - had small skin cancer removed from my face. Will have Zometa end of Jan. 2018.

Well, you are taking whack-a-mole to a whole new level. So sorry after the GK bowled a strike and knocked down all ten, that now a new one has dared to pop up. That won't stand for long.
Marie, we love you and Ed. You have been such a support to all of us here, and we (I) appreciate that you have been keeping an eye on us even when you don't have the time or energy to post.

Steph, We did have an appointment but Ed's back is hurting so much we could not make it down there (30 miles). The doctor wanted to break this news but I thought it would be better if I did this time. We have the plan ready, thank goodness.
I have complete respect for our teams. The Gamma Knife team consists of 6 doctors (THE Gammaman & WBR Doc & 4 consultants). Steph, I so love how you protect us, you are too cute.
I am so blessed having you all watching over us. I always feel like we live in a giant protective bubble. You guys rock.

Marie, I am so sorry to hear about the new problem but I'm also confident that Ed will have good results from the gamma knife again.
I agree with the others, you just sit back and let everyone here love you and Ed. Don't feel that if you don't post on every thread that you're not a great person. We all know what you're going thru and how much you have on your plate. You love us just as much as we love you two. You guys are always on my mind and in all my prayers.

Diagnosed stage 2b in July 2003 (2.3 cm, HER2+, ER-/PR-, 7+ nodes). Treated with mastectomy (with immediate DIEP flap reconstruction), AC + T/Herceptin (off label). Cancer advanced to lung in Jan. 2007 (1 cm nodule). Started Herceptin every 3 weeks. Lung wedge resection April 2007. Cancer recurred in lung April 2008. RFA of lung in August 2008. 2nd annual brain MRI in Oct. 2008 discovered 2.6 cm cystic tumor in left frontal lobe. Craniotomy Oct. 2008 (ER-/PR-/HER2-) followed by targeted radiation (IMRT). Coughing up blood Feb. 2009. Thoractomy July 2009 to cut out fungal ball of common soil fungus (aspergillus) that grew in the RFA cavity (most likely inhaled while gardening). No cancer, only fungus. Removal of tiny melanoma from upper left arm, plus sentinel lymph node biopsy in Feb. 2016. Guardant Health liquid biopsy in Feb. 2016 showed mutations in 4 subtypes of TP53. Repeat of Guardant Health biopsy in Jana. 2021 showed 3 TP53 mutations, BRCA1 mutation and CHEK2 mutation. Invitae genetic testing showed negative for all of these. Living with MBC since 2007. Stopped Herceptin Hylecta (injection) treatment in March 2020. Recent 2021 annual CT of chest, abdomen and pelvis and annual brain MRI showed NED. Praying for NED forever!!
