Wink Spicing Up Broccoli Boosts Its Cancer-Fighting Power

http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/releases/234385.php

I think I am going to try this. At the very least experimenting with different spices and herbs will give broccoli variety. I wonder if using these spices will do the same for other crucifious veggies like cauliflour, cabbage, and brussel sprouts. I bet these spices would also be good with kale.

Re: Spicing Up Broccoli Boosts Its Cancer-Fighting Power

Elaine,
Thanks! I'm not sure I love the idea of 'spicier' broccoli, but the article says that broccoli sprouts taste like radishes. I like the sound of that!
And upon reading further, the article says sprouts may have more cancer fighting properties than the mature vegetable. Fascinating!

Honestly, until today, I had never even heard of broccoli sprouts. You can be sure I'll be looking for them when next I visit my organic grocer!
Be well!
Denise

Wink Re: Spicing Up Broccoli Boosts Its Cancer-Fighting Power

A little stir fry combining several of the veggies in the article would be nice. We don't have to add alot of spice. A pinch or two will still help. I add a little tumeric, ginger, garlic, horseradish, pepper, lemon, onion or basil to my stir fried veggies depending what taste I want. Wasabi would be good, but it is very strong, so we should only use a little unless you want to clear out all your sinuses and everything else !! Smile.

Hmmm...
I promise not to turn this into a recipe swap...
but what does turmeric taste like?

Is it savory? bitter? I've never used it. But all those other things you've suggested sound delicious. (I find most dishes are improved by the addition of garlic and onion!)

And I wonder...does the horseradish have to be freshly ground, or can it be the stuff from a jar?

Tumeric is in the ginger family. Fresh tumeric looks like fresh ginger, except the inside is orange. If I get fresh tumeric I grade it. You can also get a jar of it from the spice shelf. It is spicy. I think it is hard to get fresh horseradish. I get a jar of it from the spice shelf or a jar of it from the refrigerated section of the supermarket.
