Bone Mets
When I was diagnosed in March of 2012 I showed 5 lesions on my spine. Right now everything is stable but....(here's the but) I still have a lot of pain and stiffness. I'm on Herceptin, Zometa and a hormone blocker. So is it the "spots" or the meds? Anyone have any suggestions, advice, words or wisdom for bone mets?
Also, I am having a bone scan and MRI Monday and hopefully it will come back with good news. Im praying for remission in my future

2/14/2014 2 mets on pelvic bone
Stop Anasterole continue on Herceptin and Zometa start radiation (again)
2/24/2014 start T-DM1 continue Herceptin and Zometa
4/28 more radiation that brings total to 5 (10 days ea) - I think I will soon glow in the dark....
6/01/2014 Great news! Rib mets gone, 4 of 5 spine mets showing new bone growth and pelvic mets shrinking.
8/28/2014 T11 on spine is being stubborn started Perjeta, Herceptin, Zometa and Taxol - goodbye hair!
9/04/2014 Tomo therapy - pain finally gone
1/3/2015 - starting New Year out as still stable. Feeling positive
2/23/2015 - problems with left leg, bone met flaring up - MORE radiation Whew!
2/24/2015 Stress fracture in right side of pelvic - (great just great) back to wheelchair then walker then.....
2/26/2015 Off Taxol!! Still on Perjeta, Herceptin and Hormone Blocker starting to feel a little more human.
4/10/2015 Cancer has spread to spinal fluid - not sure where I go from here
6/29/2015 Omaya Port placed,begin IT Herceptin on 7/7/2015

April 2014 - Liver mets found
April 2014 to present - Chemo again, whooohoo. Fun!
July 2014, scans look good.
Stay on Perjetand hercertin.
Nov. 2014 more lepto-mening disease more WBR.
Feb 2015 more lepto-mening disease in spine and neck. More radiation.
Start on TDM1 no more Perjeta stay on herceptin
March 2015 more radiation in my thoracic area, more lepto-meningial disease
April 2015 trying to walk again.

Hey Paula,
The stiffness could very well be a side effect of the AI, and possibly the Zometa also. You can do a search on the site for "AI side effects" or "joint stiffness" and probably find several thread that discuss this.
I was on one of the three AI's for a total of 8 years and experienced significant joint stiffness on each.

Paula I have the very same stiffness and joint pain and can tell you its from the Arimidex I've been taking for seven years now, hate it but better than a recurrance of course and wanted to wish you well for your scan! My Onc suggested Glucosamine/Chondroitin daily which does help a little but you need to be taking it about six weeks to notice a difference.

Guess what? My friend is Suzanne Silverson and she says she knows you! Are you hearing a refrain of "It's a Small World After All"?
My husband wants to go to the hallowed ground of Lambeau Field in Green Bay to see a Packers game next season. I told him it must be EARLY in the season since I do not wish to freeze on the famous "frozen tundra" of Green Bay! The schedule comes out in April (or did he say May?) so we will know then when we will be heading West. The plan is to head out to Hot Springs to visit Suzanne after the game, so I just guess we will have to order some pizza! I'd love to meet up with when we are out there. I will keep you posted!

I love the small world story! I, too had terrible joint pain and stiffness while on arimidex. Still have a "frozen" thumb as a result...years later. Best of luck with your scan.

Hi Paula,
Is it possible Zometa is causing the pain?. At the beginning of my treatment with Zometa I, too, developed a lot of pain all over my body, after 3-4 treatments the pain has gone away completely. Hope this helps.

Ok lets try this again - first post didn't go thru. Scans show I am still stable!!! Yea I will take stable!
Its nice to know all of you are out there and understand scanxiety.
As far as the stiffness/aches they reduced my Zometa and it helped some. So AI wins the popular vote.
Laurel - WOW! would love to meet you in person. Anyone on this site that will be visiting the beautiful Black Hills let me know. Suzanne is great we met her several years ago - keep me posted

Stable is good.
I actually like stable better than NED now. NED can be an unstable perch. I figure if my cancer stays the way it is, I can manage that. Not too bad.

4/30/13 Begin Kadcyla/TDM-1
8/16/13 PET scan "mixed," with some areas of increased uptake, but also some definite improvement, so I'll stay on TDM-1/Kadcyla.
11/11/13 Finally get hormone receptor results from lung biopsy of 4/2/13. My cancer is no longer ER positive.
11/13/13 PET scan mixed results again. We're calling it "stable." Problems breathing on exertion.
2/18/14 PET scan shows a new lesion and newly active lymph node in chest, other progression. Bye bye TDM-1.
2/28/14 Begin Herceptin/Perjeta every 3 weeks.
6/8/14 PET "mixed," with no new lesions, and everything but lower lungs improving. My breathing is better.
8/18/14 PET "mixed" again. Upper lungs & one spine met stable, lower lungs less FDG avid, original tumor more avid, one lymph node in mediastinum more avid.
9/1/14 Begin taking Xeloda one week on, one week off. Will also stay on Herceptin and Perjeta every three weeks.
12/11/14 PET Scan--no new lesions, and everything looks better than it did.
3/20/15 PET Scan--no new lesions, but lower lung lesions larger and a bit more avid.
4/13/15 Increasing Xeloda dose to 10 days on, one week off.
7/1/15 Scan "mixed" again, but suggests continuing progression. Stop Xeloda. Substitute Abraxane every 3 weeks starting 7/13.
10/28/15 PET scan shows dramatic improvement everywhere. All lesions except lower lungs have resolved; lower lungs noticeably improved.
12/18/15 Last Abraxane. Continue on Herceptin and Perjeta alone beginning 1/8/16.
1/27/16 PET scan shows cancer is stable.
5/11/16 PET scan shows uptake in some areas that were resolved on the last two scans.
6/3/16 Begin Kadcyla and Tykerb combination
6/5 - 6/23 Horrible diarrhea from K&T together. Got pneumonia.
7/15/16 Begin Kadcyla only every 3 weeks.
9/6/16 Begin radiation therapy on right lung lesion that caused the pneumonia.
10/3/16 Last of 12 radiation treatments to right lung.
11/4/16 Huffing and puffing, low O2, high heart rate, on tiniest bit of exertion. Diagnosed as radiation pneumonitis. Treated with Prednisone.
11/11/16 PET scan shows significant improvement to radiated part of right lung BUT a bunch of new lung lesions, and the bone met is getting worse.
11/22/16 Begin Eribulin and Herceptin. H every 3 weeks. E two weeks on, one week off.
3/6/17 Scan shows progression in lungs. Bone met a little better.
3/23/17 Lung biopsy. Tumor sampled is ER-, PR+ (5%), HER2+++. Getting Herceptin and Perjeta as a maintenance treatment.
5/31/17 Port placement
6/1/17 Start Navelbine & Tykerb

Never thought about it that way - stable in some ways is better than NED. I think the Oncs keep a closer eye on stable so constantly being monitored can work to my advantage! Thanks Mtngrl for the insight.

I know I'm echoing all the previous posts but I wanted to be part of the fun. I have about a dozen bone mets and have been on a bunch of AIs and found they caused way more total body stiffness than any bone met I've met. In my experience bone mets cause very specific pain to the touch, it does hurt to move and doesn't get better with exercise. Stiffness caused by treatment causes waxing and waning pain, that can't be localized or hurts when you touch it. It gets better with exercise and local heat (hot pack). Bone met pain and AI pain are totally different beasts, each horrible in their own way.

Late May 2011: Bone mets but organs clear; Tykerb, Xeloda, Xgeva. Stopped Herceptin. Implant infected: removed implant.
October 2011: Bone progression; Gemzar and Carboplatin & restarted Herceptin.
Jan 2012: Progression, re-classified as ER+; Tykerb, Herceptin, Zoladex & Femara. Anti-E is working!
May 2012: ovaries out, markers stable but elevated. Cont. Herceptin, Tykerb, Xgeva & Femara.
Dec 2012: aromasin

Thanks Kristin - what you said makes a lot of sense. I do have both types of pain you described but now I have a baseline of which may be which!! Would love to hear from more ladies with bone mets - I need the info and the encouragement!

DX March 2012
Stage IV w/ 5 bone mets to spine 2 on ribs
Herceptin, Zometa, Taxotere and Anasterole and of course radiation
2/14/2014 2 mets on pelvic bone
Stop Anasterole continue on Herceptin and Zometa start radiation (again)
2/24/2014 start T-DM1 continue Herceptin and Zometa
4/28 more radiation that brings total to 5 (10 days ea) - I think I will soon glow in the dark....
6/01/2014 Great news! Rib mets gone, 4 of 5 spine mets showing new bone growth and pelvic mets shrinking.
8/28/2014 T11 on spine is being stubborn started Perjeta, Herceptin, Zometa and Taxol - goodbye hair!
9/04/2014 Tomo therapy - pain finally gone
1/3/2015 - starting New Year out as still stable. Feeling positive
2/23/2015 - problems with left leg, bone met flaring up - MORE radiation Whew!
2/24/2015 Stress fracture in right side of pelvic - (great just great) back to wheelchair then walker then.....
2/26/2015 Off Taxol!! Still on Perjeta, Herceptin and Hormone Blocker starting to feel a little more human.
4/10/2015 Cancer has spread to spinal fluid - not sure where I go from here
6/29/2015 Omaya Port placed,begin IT Herceptin on 7/7/2015
