nervous to stop Letrozole

Hi everyone. Have my checkup with my oncologist tomorrow. I believe last
visit (five years out yahoo). A little nervous because I know he will now
take me off the Letrozole. Little security blanket. I dont think I have much
estogen floating around but I believe that abdominal fat cells can turn into
estrogen is correct? Anyway I better get rid of some of this chubby tummy now! I have not been on the boards writing for a while. Denise's death really knocked the wind out of me. We lost so many wonderful people lately and usually I just go on and read what is happening but have not had much too add. Wishing all a year ahead of health and happiness. bye for now Lois

Re: nervous to stop Letrozole

Hi Lois,

He may not take you off the Femara. I was on tamoxifen for 4.5 years, Femara for 5 yrs, recurred and back on Femara again.

I believe it is now standard to recommend tamoxifen for 10 years, not sure about the AIs. Personally, I intend to be on Femara for the rest of my life unless they come up with anything better.

Best,

Janis

Re: nervous to stop Letrozole

Hi Lois, I was surprised to have my new oncologist say that after chemo I'd be on arimidex (that's letrazole, right?) for the rest of my life. He said studies are showing it continues to help.

First occurrence: found lump in my left breast in 2002. 1.4 cm Stage I Grade I Node neg ER+ PR+ HER2 neg (didn't even know what HER2 meant). Lumpectomy, radiation, 5 years Arimedex.
Second occurrence: Oct. 2013 I found a lump in my right breast 3 months after a clear mammo.
1.5 IDC Stage I, node neg, Grade III.
Lumpectomy in November.
First path report ER+ 10% PR- HER2 neg. two margins not clear. Sample sent for Oncotype Dx test. After much delay and confusion, it turned out there are two cell lines. The ER+ tissue has an RS score of 37. The second cell type is ER-PR- HER2 +++. This double tissue type has only been found by the Oncotype lab 3 times for the entire US since they started doing the test. I'd like to be unique some other way!
October 2013 double mastectomy without reconstruction.
Treatment plan: 6 infusions of TCH then the rest of the year Herceptin, and Arimidex forever. After all this, my chance of dying from cancer in the next 10 years is probably less than dying from something else!

Re: nervous to stop Letrozole

Thanks for your replies ladies. Well I went to see my oncologist today and he said that I will be stopping the Letrozole now. He doesnt feel studies are showing any strong benefits of staying on and he said the Herceptin was the drug that has offered the most benefit. He said even after I stop the Letrozole the effects will remain in my system for quite a while. Anyway felt pretty good walking out saying goodbye and thanks for all he had done. Thanks again Lois
