HRT and HER!

Just found out that I have osteopenia in my back despite having "normal" Hip density. As I exercise ALOT and have sufficient calcium etc I am wondering about HRT if you are purely HER+++? Does anybody know? Many thanks ROMO

Yes, the HRTs do cause bone loss. Also, chemo can cause temporary bone loss as well. My onc. says it levels out 2 1/2-3 years after you stop chemo and start on the HRTs.

I was on HRT before I was diagnosed with breast cancer. As soon as the diagnosis was confirmed, my oncologist took me off my HRT.

Thanks Its just that a friend said that there was now a new one on trial that is ok for women that have had BC? ROMO

Check the ASCO 2006 website. There's a recent study there that says HRT tx. in bc patients does not increase relapse. Of course, you want to make sure that you have a hormonal negative bc. Most her2+s are er/pr negative.

Might be straying off the point somewhat but ?? is your friend thinking of the STAR trial???

Recent research has shown that taking calcium alone or with vitamin D does not increase bone density in post-menopausal women. Only a drugs such as actonel, fozamax or raloxifene actually increase bone density. As well, HRT has been shown to increase bone density.
