Is this possible?
A friend of mine is diagnosed with cancer. She found a tumor in her breast - in the left side of the breast, and definately in the breast.
Sha was operated couple of weeks ago, and now the doctors tell her that this is not breast cancer - and the tumor is not the primary tumor - which they cannot find!!!
She has taken all sorts of examinations, MR CT and Pet. Nothing found elsewere. So where is the primary tumor?
How is this possible??
And - how do they know?

Sorry to hear about your friend. I have hear of this a couple of times before, where they never were able to find the primary tumor. That is all I know about it but someone else will answer you soon.

I met a woman in my chemo room who had small cell lung cancer in her
breast. No other cancer could be found anywhere in her body, including
her lungs.

In this world anything is possible. The doctors should examine the tumor throughly even if they have to send it to another lab to do it. I am sure they can figure out what kind it is if they do that.

Diagnosed stage 2b in July 2003 (2.3 cm, HER2+, ER-/PR-, 7+ nodes). Treated with mastectomy (with immediate DIEP flap reconstruction), AC + T/Herceptin (off label). Cancer advanced to lung in Jan. 2007 (1 cm nodule). Started Herceptin every 3 weeks. Lung wedge resection April 2007. Cancer recurred in lung April 2008. RFA of lung in August 2008. 2nd annual brain MRI in Oct. 2008 discovered 2.6 cm cystic tumor in left frontal lobe. Craniotomy Oct. 2008 (ER-/PR-/HER2-) followed by targeted radiation (IMRT). Coughing up blood Feb. 2009. Thoractomy July 2009 to cut out fungal ball of common soil fungus (aspergillus) that grew in the RFA cavity (most likely inhaled while gardening). No cancer, only fungus. Removal of tiny melanoma from upper left arm, plus sentinel lymph node biopsy in Feb. 2016. Guardant Health liquid biopsy in Feb. 2016 showed mutations in 4 subtypes of TP53. Repeat of Guardant Health biopsy in Jana. 2021 showed 3 TP53 mutations, BRCA1 mutation and CHEK2 mutation. Invitae genetic testing showed negative for all of these. Living with MBC since 2007. Stopped Herceptin Hylecta (injection) treatment in March 2020. Recent 2021 annual CT of chest, abdomen and pelvis and annual brain MRI showed NED. Praying for NED forever!!

Sounds like a PET/CT scan is in order. Even with that, if the primary is really small it may not be visible
A patient at my work had a melanoma in her breast and another had lymphoma in the breast so I guess anything is possible.

I have heard of this happening to two other people - one had back trouble for two years and they finally found a "breast cancer" met but no other sign...she gets herceptin treatment where I get treated and has for the last 4 years.
I cannot remember where the cancer was found on the guy I met or what kind, I only remember it was very odd...sorry I do not remember more, but it does happen.
