Sad Announcement - HavahJ

I received the following from StephN the other day:

This is Ariel, Jan's son and it is sad for me to anounce that my mom died this past saturday. it was unexpected as she and the doctors believed that she had from 6-12 months. she had already done spheres twice and it worked both times. then she went off chemo about at that time because it was making her to weak. everything was going smoothly for a few months and then the liver started to grow again (while the bone remained stable). they found out that the spheres had given her an ulcer in her stomach and so spheres were ruled out for a third time and they decided on embrolization or something like that to inject chemo with a needle into the tumors. this happened on friday and she was up and talking afterwards. then at around 6 am on saturday her heart stopped and they revived her a bit but she was already far gone. they think that perhaps the ulcer started to bleed or some type of internal bleeding occured because her hemoglobin count went very low.

just know that she was a fighter and did everything possible and hopefully you all can learn from that spirit not to give up.

Ariel Solomon

What very sad news. As I re-read Jan's post from the past year, I felt even sadder knowing how alone she must have felt. But how brave she has been and how good of her son to let us know and to hope that it encourages us. People are truly so very good and special, aren't they?
I send my prayers and love to Jan's family as they deal with their tragic news.

Thanks Joe for letting us know. This is so sad to me. Jan (HavahJ) IM'd me a long time ago because she was having a difficult time understand how this board works. During that time I helped her out and we began emailing each other. She was all alone and didn't have anyone to talk too. She had a full plate to deal with...she had brain surgery, mets to liver & she also had MS. She was very frightened but she really was a strong woman...a true warrior...she fought long and hard in more ways then one.

She researched and sought out everything she could find that might help her. Traveled to UCLA alone. She really was an amazing lady and I truly will miss her. I knew something was wrong because I hadn't heard from her in a while and that wasn't like her. My deepest condolences to her family.

Chelee

The tears are falling

Thank you, Joe for posting this. I am once again saddened and depressed to have lost another warrior in this battle we all wage. Chelee, thank you for sharing your thoughts about Jan. I am saddened more than anything else that she felt alone and had so few to talk to. It just reminds me to reach a little further to those around me, to love a little stronger, and to carry those who are weary another mile, another smile, another hug.
My prayers go out to Jan's family. I am finding it hard to keep the tears from flowing right now. I wish I could have been there for her, for her family. Another great loss for this world, another sister takes wings...and I am at a loss right now. Filled with grief and empathy. My love to her family, Vickie

First of all I send my sincere condolences to Havah's family. I'm on vacation and somehow was quite shocked to read this notice. My thoughts are with her son and everyone that visits this site. I haven't been posting much. I currently have 28 third graders and we are required to write long narratives as part of the progress reports. This keeps me busy at this time of the year, as well as extra work of an unusually large class. Please know that my thoughts are with you and all that you are going through. I do log on everyday, and want to know that I have been sending positive thoughts to "Mighty Oak" and all the others who are struggling with issues.
Best wishes for 2009.
Barbara

Not much I can add except my deepest sympathies. It's especially hard to learn of situations where treatment causes problems. I was under the impression that spheres could only be done once. ?

Hello everyone -
I was very sorry to get that note from Jan's son. He found an unanswered message from me in her inbox and replied that way. Hit me hard as I was last contacted by Jan that she was feeling OK about her treatment and that there was some progress.

As Chelee said Jan was fighting on two fronts (the MS) and did not seem to have a lot of help. That is the beauty of this site that a person can come here for the understanding and information and not feel so isolated by their disease and/or living situation.

Her wings were well-earned from years of fending off the cancer. She started mets with a strange place - at the base of her skull (in her skull) that was low enough to show up on a routine scan (eyes to thighs).

Rest in Peace.

I too am shocked and saddened by the loss of Jan. I hope that Ariel can receive some comfort to know that his mother found support on this site.

While we are physically miles apart, there have been more than one cyber hug shared.

Heartfelt condolences to the family and peace in knowing that Jan has gone to a resting place with no fear.
