Breast CA and Folate-More research

And another article from Pubmed. 2015 research will show that nutrition will play an even bigger part of our survival. Supplements will help despite what some physicians have been trained to believe.

Nutr Cancer. 2015 Feb 3:1-7. [Epub ahead of print]
The Association Between Circulating Total Folate and Folate Vitamers With Overall Survival After Postmenopausal Breast Cancer Diagnosis.
McEligot AJ1, Ziogas A, Pfeiffer CM, Fazili Z, Anton-Culver H.
Author information

Abstract

We studied the relationship between plasma total folate and folate vitamer concentrations [5-methyltetrahydrofolic acid, pteroylglutamic acid (folic acid) and tetrahydrofolic acid] with overall survival after breast cancer diagnosis. A secondary aim was to assess the relationship between folic acid supplement use with circulating total folate and folate vitamer concentrations. Participants were postmenopausal women diagnosed with breast cancer (n = 498) with an average follow-up of 6.7 yr. Plasma total folate and folate vitamers were measured by isotope-dilution LC-MS/MS in samples collected at or postdiagnosis. Cox proportional multivariate hazards models (controlled for stage, age at diagnosis, body mass index, parity, hormone replacement therapy use, treatment, alcohol use, folic acid use, and energy intake), were used to assess overall survival after breast cancer diagnosis. We found that the relative risk of dying for women with plasma total folate concentrations in the highest quartile was 59% lower (hazard ratio: 0.41, 95% confidence interval: 0.19-0.90) compared with the lowest quartile. Data on supplement use showed that women taking folic acid supplements had significantly higher circulating total folate and folate vitamer concentrations (P < 0.0001), suggesting that increased folate consumption through diet and/or supplementation may improve prognosis after breast cancer diagnosis.

Re: Breast CA and Folate-More research

Wow! That's great news. My onc has told me he thought it was a good idea to take folate supplements and I have been doing that for several years now. I take Deplin 15 which crosses the blood brain barrier and is classified as a medical food. Wonder if that will help as far as developing brain mets.

Small tumor detected on chest wall during routine scan. 2/2010 surgery to remove tumor, started Herceptin/Tykerb, follow up radiation. [*]12/26/2010 - Off Tykerb due to allergic reaction[*]12/16/2014 - Have continued on Herception for almost 5 years now and remain NED. Discussion with onc re adding Perjeta to the Herceptin as another way of preventing recurrence. Still in discussion phase. 12/26/14 Onc applying for approval for Perjeta.
Perjeta approved and I received one infusion. It had an immediate impact to my lungs and I experienced difficulty breathing so.....I'm going to be sticking with just Herceptin. Still looking for a good vaccine program to enroll in.

Re: Breast CA and Folate-More research

Depending on one's MTHFR snps, Deplin (methylfolate) is either great or a disaster. For me, methylfolate has a horrible effect at only 400 micrograms. I'm glad that it works well for you, Debbie Kay. I'd be on the floor with the dose you're taking. (The MTHFR gene variation I received in the genetic lottery is relatively rare.)

I supplement natural (i.e., food-derived) folate, because neither the methyl form nor calcium folinate work for me. Because folate has pitfalls, I limit my intake to about 600 micrograms, and I never get more than 800 micrograms a day.
