xylitol cystals - corn vs birch wood

Hi,

I am trying to give up sugar, or at least limit it. There has been a mention of xylitol in some threads.

I am not sure where to buy Xylitol from since there is some concern regarding xylitol from corn source vs birch wood.

Has anyone tried both - do they taste different? Is there a preference ...?

As always, appreciate your thoughts and input.

hugs,
shobha

Corn sugar or birch sound to be both good. May be you may prefer a sugar sub I have been using called Sweet One. It is hard to find locally. It tastes very similar to Splenda, and it is a safer pick. Equal is made from an amino acid in a very concentrated amount. That can be a long term problem.. It'S Phenilanine, this may not metabolize as well in such concentrated amounts. SweetOne, on the other than is made from a compex sugar called dextrose and potasium acesulame-k sweet One can be purchased on-line atseetone.com or call toll free1800-544-8610. EST
Hope this helps, christine
ps: I've tried others out there: yukk!!

How about Stevia instead? It's herbal and is thought to have anticancer properties. I have used it for years. You do have to be careful not to use too much. Too much actually makes things bitter. It's about to be officially approved by the FDA as a sweetener. Currently marketed as a "supplement".

Thanks Rich!

I would definitely want something that has anticancer properties since I am trying to find all ways to protect myself and rest is upto fate. Stevia sounds like the right option. Is the taste tolerable? The reason I was leaning towards xylitol was that it tasted just like sugar but I am not sure if it has anti cancer properties...

I used to use Splenda but it made my face flush a bit and seemed to eventually make me crave sweets more. After I stopped using it, I came across other concerning health info about it.
I think Stevia tastes great and sweetens well so long as not overdone. I use the big shaker bottle, the "supreme" from here: http://stevitastevia.com/content/blogcategory/27/50/
The flavored versions are good too. Just add to coffee, water or sparkling water for a guilt free sweet tooth fix. I've never baked with it..uh...since I never bake.
You can get stevia in packets to have when at restaurants too.

If you haven't read it already, there's a discussion on sugar and sweeteners here:

I just read through all the posts on the discussion thread regarding sweetners and sugar as well the links within it regarding stevia.

Thanks a bunch, Rich. Decision made - I am going with Stevia! One more little weapon and little more hope
