Re: Kadcyla - Scotland

I hope it works!

Interested that the suffix "um" is added to both halves of the "official" drug name as shown in the illustration. Kadcyla is called "Trastusumab emtansine" here in the US.

Re: Kadcyla - Scotland

Hi Amy

I didn't notice that on illustration label!
Will check that out tomorrow when I start trial with this drug.
Checked my trial info and its spelt "Trastuzumab" on info sheets. I wonder if this mis-spelling has been done by newspaper!
The link is for online version of article. Newspaper version a bit different.
The newspaper is not the best and I felt article not well written. It was on front and 2 inner pages.
I was at trials ward waiting to get blood test done when I saw the front page of newspaper. It mentioned "6 months life" a few times!

Fingers crossed that it gets the signatures!

Re: Kadcyla - Scotland

Good luck today Juls. I’m glad you are finally starting TDM-1. I read another article when I had my first recurrence about a women named Emma Barnes from Manchester who was trying to get the government to cover TDM-1. She got the drug as part of a trial, and has been taking it ever since. I link for a couple of the articles I found are below. I’m sure you can find more if you google her name.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/ar...ve-months.html

http://www.mirror.co.uk/lifestyle/he...r-drug-3447638

¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬ ¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬
12/15 – First mammogram
01/16 – Second mammogram and ultrasound.
01/16 – Meet surgeon and go for third mammogram, second ultrasound and biopsy. Surgeon confirms cancer in left breast and lymph nodes and sets surgery date.
01/16 – Chest scan and bone scan done– all looks good.
02/16 – Surgery - left breast mastectomy and 16 lymph nodes removed (8 had cancer).
02/16 – CT scan done – small nodules on lung but Doctor advises it’s post surgical. They will continue to monitor just in case.
03/16 – Meet radiation oncologist and find out results of Pathology Report. I’m told that I have locally advanced breast cancer, based on the size of my tumour (7 cm!) and the fact that they found cancer cells in eight lymph nodes. I’m also told that I’m HER 2 positive, with high levels of estrogen and progesterone and that my cancer is stage 3, grade 2.
03/16 – Meet oncologist and am told that my cancer is actually grade 3, and that I should have done chemo before surgery. Too late now!
03/16 – Start first of six doses of chemo (Carboplatin and Docetaxal) and Herceptin (for 18 months).
04/16 – Have port put in.
04/16 – Get second dose of chemo, but Docetaxal is left out due to liver enzymes being high. I was unable to get a full dose of Docetaxal after my first treatment.
06/16 – Finished chemo! One month off and then I start radiation.
06/16 – Start Tamoxifen.
07/16 – First radiation treatment – 24 more to go!
08/16 – Went for Genetic Testing to see if I have the BRCA gene. Tested negative for BRCA I and II
08/16 – Radiation oncologist biopsies “scar tissue” on my chest wall. I am told that I have a local recurrence and need to have rush surgery.
09/16 – Meet surgeon who advises that I need to meet with a plastic surgeon, as they will need to do a skin graft to close me up after surgery. Meet plastic surgeon and all looks good. A surgery date is set for October 4.
09/16 – Go for rush ultrasound, bone scan, breast MRI and CT scan.
09/16 – Meet oncologist who advises that the ultrasound and bone scan results look good, and that MRI shows three small masses at surgery site, but lymph nodes are clear. Still awaiting the results of the CT scan, but we are positive it will look good.
09/16 – Get a call from my oncologist, who advises that CT scan shows small spots on my lungs, and a large lymph node in the middle of my chest. This means the cancer has spread! She looks into getting me funded for TDM-1 and cancels my surgery.
10/16 – Meet oncologist, who advises that I have to take Perjeta before I can take TDM1. I start Perjeta/Herceptin every three weeks for an indefinite amount of time, and Taxol, which I will take two weeks in a row with one week off and then two weeks in a row for 8-16 treatments. Stop Tamoxifen.
10/16 – Meet surgeon, who reviews my CT scan and advises that the spots on my lungs may not be cancer, and that he doesn’t see a lymph node in my chest. He thinks it’s a spot on my lung. I’m feeling very confused! He advises that my oncologist doesn’t want me to have surgery to remove the three small masses on my scar line, as she wants to use them as a way to determine if the treatment is working. He advises that if they have not shrunk in 6 months, he will revisit surgery.
10/16 – CEA blood test to determine Tumour markers. Results were normal (2.7). My doctor advises that this could mean two things: (1) that the treatment is working, and the tumours are shrinking, or (2), that I'm one of those people who never get elevated CEA levels. Given that some people never get an elevated CEA level, this test doesn’t seem very accurate to me! Asked for PET scan, but am told I don’t qualify.
10/16 – Brain MRI – NED!
11/16 - CA-15-30 blood test – Tumour markers are normal at 19.
11/16 – Second CEA blood test – Tumours markers are still normal at 1.6
11/16 – Second CA-15-30 bloot test – Tumour markers are still normal at 19
11/16 – Develop lymphedema and have to wear a sleeve
12/16 – CT Scan shows that the tumors on my lungs and the lymph node in the middle of my chest are shrinking, and that some have resolved. Also, the small masses along my scar line are no longer visible. This means the medication is working!
12/16 – Small “pimple” shows up where old tumour on chest wall was located. Doctor is going to monitor it for now.
01/17 – A second “pimple” shows up on chest wall, as well as a small lump under the skin. My doctor thinks it’s scar tissue and will monitor it for now.
0/17 – Started to develop severe back pain – worried the cancer has spread to my spine
03/17 – CT Chest scan scheduled to see if there’s improvement to chest and lungs. If results the are good, I get to stop taking Taxol!
03/17 – Second brain MRI scheduled

Re: Kadcyla - Scotland

Hi Tiffany
Just home about 8 pm.
Left house this morning at 9.15 so a long day.
Seemed to go well . No infusion problems so allowed home! Had to wait for 1 hour between the IV's and then another 1 1/2 after. Should be shorter next time.
Just wish I knew if I had placebo or trial drug.
Time will tell!

Re: Kadcyla - Scotland

I’m glad things went well Juls, despite the long day! I hope you are getting the immunotherapy drug, but, if not, at last you’re getting the TDM-1. I guess you’ll know based on the side-effects you get? Didn’t your doctor tell you that the side-effects from the immunotherapy drug would be distinct. Keep us posted regarding how you are doing?

Re: Kadcyla - Scotland

Hi
Yes - My Oncologist ( who is not doing this study) told me that side effects were "weird" on this immuno. drug.
Trial Nurse (who is doing this study) told me that she already has a patient on this immunotherapy drug (different trial) and he has no side effects.
Think I'll go with Trial nurses comments.
Had a new team of Nurses and Oncologist yesterday who told me I had coped well with 1st infusions and that they were not expecting any problems! Hope that's true!
Today I am feeling fine, a bit of tightness in lower back and hips but that's all . So far!
Fingers crossed.

I hope the petition works, and you get funding for TDM-1 in Scotland. This drug has saved so many people’s lives, I can’t believe it’s not covered.

I assume one needs to live in Scotland to sign the petition? Is that a safe assumption?

And I agree. The Daily Mail article is much clearer.

My daughter, who has a master's degree in biomedical science policy and advocacy and a bachelor's degree in molecular and cellular developmental biology, thinks Kadcyla should prevent metastasis. I'm not sure if that's true in my case. Scan reports are not always clear about whether something that's lighting up is new or just an old site that woke up. But I haven't had mets in any new organs since I first had Kadcyla--"just" mediastinal lymph nodes (off and on) and progression in the lungs. I also have one bone met that I suspect is triple negative, so HER2 treatments don't help it. I personally think my last PET was too soon after my radiation treatment to my lung to give meaningful information. We'll see.

I hope it's your home run, Jules, with or without the immunotherapy.

Re: Kadcyla - Scotland

Like Amy, I am assuming that you have to live in the UK to sign the petition? If not, let me know, and I’ll sign it. One thing I’ve noticed is that when I click on the link, I get a pop-up box that won’t let me read the article unless I answer questions. It’s really annoying!

Amy, I find what your daughter said to be very interesting. My oncologist is a big believer in Kadcyla, and wanted to give it to me before Perjeta, however, our health care wouldn’t pay for it unless I took Perjeta first. If Kadcyla is that good, I’m not sure why they aren’t giving it to people right off the bat! It seems such a shame to have to put people through endless rounds of chemo if they don’t have to.

I hope Kadcyla works or you Juls. I have a feeling that it will!

11/16 – Second CEA blood test – Tumours markers are still normal at 1.6 Second CA-15-30 bloot test – Tumour markers are still normal at 19
11/16 – Develop lymphedema and have to wear a sleeve
03/17 – Third CEA blood test and CA-15-30 blood test – awaiting results.
03/17 – CT Chest scan scheduled to see if there’s improvement to chest and lungs. If results the are good, I get to stop taking Taxol!
03/17 – Second brain MRI scheduled

Amy and Tiffany, I think anyone can sign it as I live in Ireland had no problem signing which is why I shared to my FB page where I have a lot of U.S friends.

Re: Kadcyla - Scotland

Thanks Tricia. I just went to sign the petition and it’s closed. They got 13,196 signatures though. I wish I had tried to sign it earlier, but I just assumed they were only collecting signatures from people who lived in the UK.

Re: Kadcyla - Scotland

Hi
Just been told petition has closed. It is up for discussion with board tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

Amy - Drug I had was named Trastuzumab Emtansine. Wonder where the paper got that photo of the drug vial. - Sums up the Daily Record!
Nancy - Thanks! 1st cycle of trial done!

Well - that's 4 days since 1st cycle of Kadcyla & Immuno/Placebo. I seem to have run out of energy. Hope it comes back.

Re: Kadcyla - Scotland

I hope the board agrees to cover TDM-1 in Scotland. Let us know the results.

I hope you get your energy back soon. Is low energy a side-effect of TDM-1? My doctor told me that there are very little side-effects with TDM-1, so maybe your energy loss is related to the immunotherapy drug. I hope so!
