MUGA Scan/Test
Hi Everyone,
I had my 4th MUGA on Monday, January 12th. I was just curious as to what the "normal" was. I believe I started at 65% and now I'm at 59%. My Nurse said that I was definitely within the normal range, however I was just curious as to when I should be concerned if and when at all. Thanks for your assistance.

5/5 nodes NEG; Clear Margins
Chemo: AC 4 rnds (1st one 3/31/08) finished 6/2/08
TH (Taxol/Hercepin) 12 weeks (1st one 6/25/08) finished 9/8/08
Herceptin 9 mos (every 3 weeks) finished 6/8/09
BRCA 1/2 NEG
Bio: Age 39, married to James 1999, 2 boys 12 & 10 yo

My Onc says that anything above 50% is "normal" or acceptable.

I had my muga done today and was talking to the guy who was doing it this same question. He said anything over 50 and you don't worry about it. He says he usually sees a decline over time with women on Herceptin but it's normal for them to remain around 52 to 54 and then go back up slightly. Mine came out at 70 today and he said that's pretty good for being on herceptin 3 years...sherryg683

Thanks for the compliment. Things are going really well. I have a very busy month with appointments (Herceptin, MUGA (which I just had this past Monday), Mammo, meeting with PS to schedule my implant recon and let's not forget my annual OB). It's so darn cold here in NH that the kids can't go out, so that makes for a looong afternoon/evening.

The normal range is 50-70, and the guideline for stopping Herceptin is a 10 percentage point drop between scans.
This happened to me once, even though my scan was 57. I stopped Herceptin for about three months and the number climbed back up.
My onc said she'd rather stop the drug than risk permanently harming my heart, because if I need to take chemo again, having a weak heart would really interfere with that.

Diagnosed stage 2b in July 2003 (2.3 cm, HER2+, ER-/PR-, 7+ nodes). Treated with mastectomy (with immediate DIEP flap reconstruction), AC + T/Herceptin (off label). Cancer advanced to lung in Jan. 2007 (1 cm nodule). Started Herceptin every 3 weeks. Lung wedge resection April 2007. Cancer recurred in lung April 2008. RFA of lung in August 2008. 2nd annual brain MRI in Oct. 2008 discovered 2.6 cm cystic tumor in left frontal lobe. Craniotomy Oct. 2008 (ER-/PR-/HER2-) followed by targeted radiation (IMRT). Coughing up blood Feb. 2009. Thoractomy July 2009 to cut out fungal ball of common soil fungus (aspergillus) that grew in the RFA cavity (most likely inhaled while gardening). No cancer, only fungus. Removal of tiny melanoma from upper left arm, plus sentinel lymph node biopsy in Feb. 2016. Guardant Health liquid biopsy in Feb. 2016 showed mutations in 4 subtypes of TP53. Repeat of Guardant Health biopsy in Jana. 2021 showed 3 TP53 mutations, BRCA1 mutation and CHEK2 mutation. Invitae genetic testing showed negative for all of these. Living with MBC since 2007. Stopped Herceptin Hylecta (injection) treatment in March 2020. Recent 2021 annual CT of chest, abdomen and pelvis and annual brain MRI showed NED. Praying for NED forever!!
