Lymphedema

I went to the hospital yesterday for treatment, and the doctor told me that I have developed lymphedema in the arm where I had lymph nodes removed. Fortunately, it’s not that bad, and my doctor showed me a massage technique to do a few times a day, which I did all day yesterday while waiting to get into the clinic. The good news is, it’s already working, and the pain, tenderness and swelling are already subsiding. She also told me that I have to start wearing a sleeve all of the time, and I have an appointment after work tonight to get sized for a sleeve. Has anyone else developed lymphedema? If so, did it eventually go away, or is this something you have to deal with for the rest of your life! I hope that with the sleeve, the swelling will eventually go down. Does anyone have any other tips on how to deal with lymphedema?

¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬ ¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬
12/15 – First mammogram
01/16 – Second mammogram and ultrasound.
01/16 – Meet surgeon and go for third mammogram, second ultrasound and biopsy. Surgeon confirms cancer in left breast and lymph nodes and sets surgery date.
01/16 – Chest scan and bone scan done– all looks good.
02/16 – Surgery - left breast mastectomy and 16 lymph nodes removed (8 had cancer).
02/16 – CT scan done – small nodules on lung but Doctor advises it’s normal. They will continue to monitor just in case.
03/16 – Meet radiation oncologist and find out results of Pathology Report. I’m told that I have locally advanced breast cancer, based on the size of my tumour (7 cm!) and the fact that they found cancer cells in eight lymph nodes. I’m also told that I’m HER 2 positive, and that my cancer is stage 3, grade 2.
03/16 – Meet oncologist and am told that my cancer is actually grade 3, and that I should have done chemo before surgery. Too late now!
03/16 – Start first of six doses of chemo (Carboplatin and Docetaxal) and Herceptin (for one year).
04/16 – Have port put in.
04/16 – Get second dose of chemo, but Docetaxal is left out due to liver enzymes being high. I was unable to get a full dose of Docetaxal after my first treatment.
06/16 – Finished chemo! One month off and then I start radiation.
06/16 – Start Tamoxifen.
07/16 – First radiation treatment – 24 more to go!
08/16 – Went for Genetic Testing to see if I have the BRCA gene. Tested negative for BRCA I and II
08/16 – Radiation oncologist biopsies “scar tissue” on my scar.
08/16 – I am told that I have a “local recurrence” and need to have rush surgery.
09/16 – Meet surgeon who advises that I need to meet with a plastic surgeon, as they will need to do a skin graft to close me up after surgery.
09/16 – Go for rush ultrasound, bone scan, breast MRI and CT scan.
09/16 – Meet plastic surgeon and all looks good. A surgery date is set for October 4.
09/16 – Meet oncologist who advises that the ultrasound and bone scan results look good, and that MRI shows three small masses at surgery site, but lymph nodes are clear. Still awaiting the results of the CT scan, but we are positive it will look good.
09/16 – Get a call from my oncologist, who advises that CT scan shows small spots on my lungs, and a large lymph node in the middle of my chest. This means the cancer has spread! She looks into getting me funded for TDM1 and cancels my surgery.
10/16 – Meet oncologist, who advises that I have to take Perjeta before I can take TDM1. I start Perjeta/Herceptin every three weeks for an indefinite amount of time, and Taxol, which I will take two weeks in a row with one week off and then two weeks in a row for 8-16 treatments.
10/16 – Stop Tamoxifen.
10/16 – Meet surgeon, who reviews my CT scan and advises that the spots on my lungs may not be cancer, and that he doesn’t see a lymph node in my chest. He thinks it’s a spot on my lung. I’m feeling very confused! He advises that my oncologist doesn’t want me to have surgery to remove the three small masses on my scar line, as she wants to use them as a way to determine if the treatment is working. He advises that if they have not shrunk in 6 months, he will revisit surgery.
10/16 – CEA blood test to determine Tumour markers. Results were normal (2.7). My doctor advises that this could mean two things: (1) that the treatment is working, and the tumours are shrinking, or (2), that I'm one of those people who never get elevated CEA levels. Given that some people never get an elevated CEA level, this test doesn’t seem very accurate to me! Asked for PET scan, but am told I don’t qualify.
10/16 – Brain MRI – NED!
11/16 - CA-15-30 blood test – Tumour markers are normal at 19.
11/16 – Second CEA blood test – Tumours markers are still normal at 1.6
11/16 – Second CA-15-30 bloot test – Tumour markers are still normal at 19
11/16 – Develop L lymphedema and have to wear a sleeve
12/16 – CT Scan scheduled for December 14. I can’t wait to find out if the Perjeta is working!

Re: Lymphedema

Tiffany, yes I have had therapy/pump/sleeves for both arms. The good news is, for the past 6 months or so I haven't needed to wear the sleeves, previously I wore them constantly and I do mean all the time.

I still wear them when I travel (sitting/driving in the car for long periods) and I always carry them with me, including the night sleeves ... which are different than the ones for daytime.

I also went through a week long therapy where they wrapped/bandaged my left arm, which is where I had it the worst, it swelled with fluid over my knuckles.

Please feel free to pm me if you like!

Aug 18, 2013: MRI report says Left breast is perfectly healthy "consistent with previous studies".

Sept 2013: I insist on a bilateral mastectomy anyway. Too nervewracking to let left breast remain with higher risk after 3 cancers in right, nipple in right is already gone anyhow.

Sept 18, 2013: Bilateral mastectomy, 11 right nodes removed, ALL negative BUT -- ER+/PRO+/HER2+ tumor, 1.0 cm, Grade 2 found in a piece of "grossly unremarkable" breast tissue from prophylactic mastectomy of left breast, no nodes removed.

Oct 25, 2013: 13 left side nodes removed, ALL negative, Stage 1 across the board, NO RADS needed, YAAAAY! Port also installed.

Nov 25, 2013 Begin 6 rounds TCH.

March 10, 2014 Just finished 6th and LAST Chemo today, YAAAAAY!

March 24, 2014 Echocardiogram to make sure I'm still good for Herceptin every 3 weeks.

March 31, 2014 Echo results NORMAL, first Herceptin all by itself. Now if only my eyes would stop streaming from the Taxotere ... :)

April 21, 2014 Started Arimidex and therapy for "mild" lymphedema in left hand and arm

May 2014 Therapy completed, I have sleeves and gloves for both arms, a Flexi touch lymph pump to hook up to for an hour every day, and I've become an arm bandaging expert. :)

Nov 17, 2014 FINAL Herceptin!

Dec 4, 2014 My right thigh muscle has been extra achy for days ... I discover a blister rash cluster on the side of my right thigh while taking a shower. Port appointment cancelled until Dec 17, my doc is working me in tomorrow afternoon to see me and the rash. My muscle at least feels less achy.

Dec 5, 2014 Yep, I have shingles. Boo! I start acyclovir and also have a prescription for a painkiller just in case for over the weekend.

Dec 17, 2014 Port is OUT!

January 2016 Shingles again and this time it started where my left breast (where the hidden HER2+++ tumor was!) used to be. My onc nurse got me a same day appointment to see my doc when I called and told her I had a rash on the site. The antiviral meds are working once again, though, so that is good news. :)

Re: Lymphedema

Thanks Carol Ann. The swelling and soreness in my arm has already gotten better since I started doing the massage technique my doctor showed me, however, I still need a sleeve. My doctor wants me to sleep with it on, and I’m glad you mentioned that I will need a difference sleeve for sleeping. I’ll have to mention that when I go to get sized tonight. I had my surgery in February, and haven’t had any problems with lymphodema until now. I wonder what triggered it.

Re: Lymphedema

Anything could have triggered it, please don't feel like you did anything you shouldn't have! But it is good to avoid blood pressure cuffs on that arm (I get mine taken on my leg since both arms are at risk, I had nodes removed on both sides), needle sticks, anything that pricks the skin on that arm, be especially careful for cuts/burns, etc.

My night sleeves are quilted and much heavier than the day sleeves, and had to be specially ordered to my specific measurements. Has the doc mentioned therapy? My onc insisted I have the therapy, and I was glad I did it, even though it was not much fun at the time!

I also used the pump alot in the beginning, every day for an hour on the left arm. A certified lymphedema therapist came to my house and showed me how to use it.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Re: Lymphedema

I got sized for my sleeve and gauntlet yesterday, and I’m wearing them both today. It will take some getting used to, especially with typing. The good thing is, the government covers 75% of the cost for two sleeves and gloves every four month, and my insurance will pay the difference.

I was told that I would need a special glove for sleeping, and that it costs $1000.00, and that the government will not cover any of it. I have to see if my insurance will cover it, and, if so, I’ll get a doctor’s note and order it. I have feeling they won’t cover it though.

I scratched my arm last week while putting up the Christmas tree, and I am wondering if that is what cause the lymphedema.

Re: Lymphedema

Hoping your insurance will cover the night sleeves for you!

Yeah, it could have been the scratch. But if it was the scratch, it was bound to happen from something sooner or later ... and now you have the sleeves, so that is good!

Re: Lymphedema

I called my insurance company, and they were very vague regarding whether it would be funded. They told me I needed a doctor’s note stating that I need the night sleeve, and, even then, they can’t guarantee that it will be covered. Apparently, when it comes to “equipment” what’s covered is determined on a case by case basis. I’m going to see my doctor next Tuesday, so I’ll find out from her if I really need a sleeve for sleeping.

11/16 – Second CEA blood test – Tumours markers are still normal at 1.6
11/16 – Second CA-15-30 bloot test – Tumour markers are still normal at 19
11/16 – Develop lymphedema and have to wear a sleeve
12/16 – CT Scan scheduled for December 14. I can’t wait to find out if the Perjeta is working!

Aug 18, 2013: MRI report says Left breast is perfectly healthy "consistent with previous studies".

I have been wearing my sleeve for my lymphedema for almost a week now, and it’s working really well. The swelling in my lower arm has already gone done, and it’s not as uncomfortable to wear as I thought it would be. My doctor was not in the office yesterday, so I asked my nurse practitioner if I needed the night sleeve. She told me to follow up with my doctor when I’m back in two weeks, but based on how my arm looks right now, she doesn’t think I’ll need it.

Re: Lymphedema

I recently had to stop wearing my sleeve and gauntlet, because the gauntlet was causing really bad skin chaffing and blistering between my thumb and finger. I tried putting a cotton ball with a band aid over the blisters, however, as the blisters were already there, it was still painful to wear the gauntlet. I have decided to let the blisters heal before wearing the gauntlet again, and I’ve been using Polysporin to help the healing process, however, I’ve noticed that the swelling is starting to come back in my lower arm and upper hand. I’m doing the massage techniques I was taught, and even went for a lymphedema drainage massage (and I have another one booked for next week), however, I was wondering if there was anything else I could do to prevent the swelling while taking a break from the sleeve and gauntlet. I was told not to wear the sleeve without the gauntlet, as the sleeve would force the fluid to move into the hand, so I can’t even wear the sleeve while I’m waiting for the skin chaffing to heal. I find this so frustrating, as I feel like every time I do something to help with one problem, it just causes something else!

Re: Lymphedema

I went to get sized for a new sleeve and glove for my lymphedema, and the swelling in my hand and arm have gone down significantly. I asked if this meant I could stop wearing the sleeve, and she said no. If I do so, the swelling may come back. The downside to wearing the sleeve is that it’s caused tendonitis in my left arm. I noticed a few weeks ago that I was experiencing tingling and cramping in that arm, and a small bump showed on my wrist. When I showed my doctor yesterday, he told me that the bump is one of my tendons, and that I developed tendinitis. I had actually thought it might be that, as I’ve had carpel tunnel and tendinitis in my right arm for years, and I’m familiar with the feeling. Oh well, what can you do?
