Unhappy Post Mastectomy Shoulder Pain???

Has anyone experienced pain or discomfort in the shoulder muscle since surgery??? I am 3 months out and yesterday, I had so much discomfort it was hard to sleep....Can't figure out if I pulled a muscle on that side or lifted something too heavy. Thanks, Ceesun

Ceesun, I'm two years out from my MRM so I can't remember the exact time frame...but it wasn't too long afterwards that I had ALOT of pain in that shoulder. It was very difficult to raise my arm upwards or do anything for fear of the pain I would experience if I did so. It came on suddenly. For the first 2 months or so it was fine. I did my exercises and all was fine. Then WHAM...my shoulder felt totally locked up. Thats the only way to explain it. Other then frozen shoulder as others call it.

I brought it up to my onc and as always she just blew it off and said it wasn't from the MRM or the femera I as on at the time. She insisted the answer was to see a orthopedic doctor. I just did NOT want to ADD another doctor to my already LARGE list of doctors/appts. ARGH

I waited it out a bit and continued to "walk my arm up the wall" daily and made sure I MOVED it as much as possible *without* over doing it. And it got back to normal. No pain and has NEVER bothered me again. So you might want to hang in there and give it a bit more time and see if it doesn't get back to normal? Just make sure you do move it daily. Its easy to start trying to protect it by NOT moving it and as we all know the saying "Move it or lose it". But go easy on it and by all means talk to your doctor about it. But I do believe it WILL get better in a short time.

Hi Ceese
I agree with Suzan that you should get this checked out.
That's what we're supposed to do with any of our aches
and pains that persist.... but it sure sounds like the beginning
of a frozen shoulder. It hurts like heck, especially when trying
to sleep. You might need physio or maybe to start over with
your post mastectomy exercises. Good luck with this.

Ceesun, I sympathize with you as I can certainly relate. My pain started 2 months after my mastectomies. It is not unusual to suffer from should pain after mastectomies---a few woman even suffer from a torn rotator cuff after mastectomy, especially if you had lymph nodes removed ---the arm and shoulder take quite a bit of abuse during surgery. Along with mastectomy, reconstruction surgery increases the pain too. Radiation was also a big enemy to my shoulder, upper arm, armpit and chest. I went for several months of physical therapy. Moving the shoulder every day is the key. Stretch until you feel a mild stretch, not pain--- otherwise you can cause damage. If you can tolerate Motrin, it helps with the inflamation. Talk to your doctor about prescribing physical therapy.

The sisters hear certainly offer great advice.

I developed frozen shoulder about 9 months after my LMRM...physical therapy, steroids injection and antinflammatory drugs did the trick for me...you may need to be evaluated...if it is frozen shoulder, the quicker you get it loosened, the better.

Frozen shoulder

Ceesun,
I have had frozen shoulder on both of my shoulders at different times, and yours sounds just like how they start. Get to a good orthopedist and get evaulated. Steroid injection, physical therapy and anti-inflammatories are what do the trick for me. Word of warning, the injection is not a pleasant experience, but I could not get past the pain of movement without it.
Good luck and know it does get better.
