Vitamin D Deficiency?

Hi her2 group,
Per a vitamin D blood test, I was recently found to be deficient in vitamin D even though I take 1000iu per day! My primary doc wants me to use a prescription vit d-2, 50,000 units (one pill) once a week for 8 weeks. It is a large dose and I am on chemo (Tykerb/Abraxane) so I am somewhat nervous about this. My onc did not find any interactions, but I am still not sure yet. However another onc mentioned the possiblity of nausea and other unpleasant side effects at that dose! Has anyone else been told to take prescription vit d-2, 50,000 units? If so, can you let me know how it worked out? I really appreciate your input. Lida

I don't fit the profile. Hopefully my empty reply will bounce this posting up and someone will be able to answer it.

I was found to be Vit D deficient as well and have been on 2000 units of Vit D a day but over the counter. My calcium levels were way high as well as my parathyroid levels so they took out a parathyroid gland which ended up having a benign andenoma on it which was causing all the trouble. My calcium levels have leveled off but the doctors still don't want me on any calcium which worries me in regards to my bone density. They took a density test and sure enough I became slightly osteopenic which is a big change from previous density scans which were perfect and without any problems. It isn't all that unusual to be deficient in Vit D especially us midwesterners. It's good that they caught it though because we need Vit D for a lot of reasons.

Lida, I too am Vitamin D deficient again this yr after seeing my Endocrinologist. My Vitamin D level was lower this yr then last yr. So my Endo perscribed vitamin D I bought from his office. I am to take my normal D I've been taking which is 2000 IU's per day...and he wants me to add one pill per week thats 5000 IU's.

My Vitamin D level last yr was 29 which is one digit below the reference range...& this yr it dropped to 24. I don't know how mine can be so low? I'm very concerned as my DEXA scan this yr showed significant changes in my bones. I'm worried and I don't think he is taking it as serious as I am. I've done some research and see alot of ppl with a Vitamin D deficiency are given 50,000 units as you are suppose to take. Makes me wonder why my Endo did not prescribe me a higher dose?

Sorry I'm probably not much help but I am glad you posted this because I am going to look into a higher dose. I see "dhealey" is taking 50,000 3 times a wk. Anyone else on this board that has information on this topic would be appreciated.

Say that AGAIN?

Hi Lida,

The first time I heard my PCP prescribe 50,000 units for a patient who was vitamin D deficient, I thought I was hearing things, or that he'd had a rough night. But for specific patients, surprisingly that is the right dosage.

Be well,

AlaskaAngel
