Sheila -- I echo others' words - sorry to hear the taxol has quit working for you and you have to decide on another treatment. Whatever direction you decide to go - gemzar, MCC trial, or other, I pray it will wipe out all the stupid cancer cells. You are strong and wise and such an encouragement to me. Pam

I like the tykerb/herceptin/xeloda idea and the RunDMC trial because (I think) they give a good quality of life. For me - herceptin/tykerb wasn't enough so she added in avastin. Only time will tell  ...
I would ask my doctor what if I tried the trial and if it didn't work couldn't I then go back on herceptin/tykerb/gemzar or other such combo? In other words what would I have to loose by trying the trial? I am hearing a lot of good results from that trial. I think it's worth a try - you can always do the regular stuff afterwards. I'm sorry for this news today. xo Flori

1996 cancer WTF?! 1.3 cm lumpectomy Er/Pr neg. Her2+ (20nodes NEGATIVE) did CMF + rads. NED.
2002 recurrence. Bilateral mastectomy w/TFL autologous recon. Then ACx2. Skin lymphatic rash. Taxotere w/Herceptin x4. Herceptin/Xeloda. Finally stops spreading.
2003 - Back to surgery, remove skin mets, and will have surgery one week later when pathology can confirm margins.

Doc says get rads consultant for L1 and possible biopsy of L1. I say, no thanks, doc. Lets see what xgeva brings to the table first. It's summer.
June-August 2013HAPX Herceptin Avastin Perjeta xgeva.
Sept - now - on chemo hold for calming tummy we hope. Markers stable for 2 months.
Nov 2013 - Herceptin-Perjeta-Avastin-Xgeva (collageneous colitis, which explains tummy probs, added Entocort)
December '13 BRAIN MRI ned in da head.
Jan 2014: CONTINUING on HAPX…
FEB 2014 PetCT clinical “impression”: 1. newbie nodule - SUV 1.5 right apical nodule, mildly hypermetabolic “suggestive” of worsening neoplastic lesion. 2. moderate worsening of the sternum – SUV 5.6 from 3.8
3. increasing sclerosis & decreasing activity of L1 met “suggests” mild healing. (SUV 9.4 v 12.1 in May ‘13)
4. scattered lung nodules, up to 5mm in size = stable, no increased activity
5. other small scattered sclerotic lesions, one in right iliac and one in thoracic vertebral body similar in appearance to L1 without PET activity and not clearly pathologic
APRIL 2014 - 6 YRS POST GAMMA ZAP, 7 YRS MBC & 18 YEARS FROM ORIGINAL DX!
October 2014: hold avastin, continue HPX
Feb 2015 Cancer you lost. NEDHEAD 7 years post gamma zap miracle, 8 years ST4, +19 yrs original diagnosis.
Continue HPX. Adding back Avastin
Nov 2015 pet/ct is mixed result. L1 SUV is worse. Continue Herceptin/avastin/xgeva. Might revisit Perjeta for L1. Meantime going for rads consult for L1
December 2015 - brain stable. Continue Herceptin, Perjeta, Avastin and xgeva.
Jan 2016: 5 days, 20 grays, Rads to L1 and continue on HAPX. I’m trying to "save" TDM1 for next line. Hope the rads work to quiet L1. Sciatic pain extraordinaire :((

12/27/19 - begin ds8401a w nivolumab. after 2nd cycle nodes melt away. after 3rd cycle chest scan shows Improvement, brain MRI shows improvement, resolved areas & nothing new. switch to plain ENHERTU. after 4th cycle, PETscan shows mostly resolved or improved results. Markers near normal. I'm stunned but grateful.
10/26/20 - June 2021 Tucatinib/xeloda/herceptin - stable ish.

due to two small places. December
2009, bone scan due to bone pain.
Follow up test in 2010.

Sheila, so sorry to hear that Taxol is no longer helping but if anyone can continue to find other treatments, I am confident it is you. So much is out there and I am keeping the faith that they find the right combination to keep those nodes from progressing. Please continue to be the strong person we all know and keep fighting. Keep us posted on what's next. You are always in my prayers.

How lucky you were to get 12 months out of Taxol! Give your body a bit of a rest from the big guns if you can so that your body has the strength to fight fight fight.

diagnosed June 03. Rt sided Inflammatory BC in rt lower quadrant. 7cm tumour. Also 3 DCIS. 3 rounds of EC, mastectomy with axillary clearance (12 nodes+ of 19). 1 more EC. 5 weeks of rads, with weekly booster to attack skin lymph involvement. 4 cycles of Taxol. Tamoxifen.Recurrence December 04, Herceptin started early Jan05,+ Arimidex.
NED 26 mths. Recurrence early Mar07. Taxol added to Herceptin. NED. Will have total of 6 cycles, then Aromisan and Herceptin. Early Oct 07, recurrence to the pesky right upper lobe, with some pleural thickening upper rt hemithorax. T/X now the treatment. May 2008, Taxatere and Herceptin for lung recurrence

I can't give you any advice, because I too have those stubborn neck nodes and so far the taxol is doing it for me, although I only got 8 months out of the hki-272 trial. I do want to wish you luck with any new treatment you choose and let you know that I am thinking of you and sending a prayer your way. Keep up the fight girlfriend!

Hi Sheila is not the news that I want to hear also ...sister but you have many drugs to try too..lapatinib, DM1, doxil ( I hear is good forpeople who progresse on taxol ...my doc thinking on doxil afte sir spheres ,......keep up spirits ..after I took my hydrocodone and motrin I almost fall sleep ...but in my mind said " I cant not going to bed with out left a message to Sheila ...I'm with you in my prayers too....Love Lily

Waiting 2 months now 3 tumors enroll on T-MCC trial start first infusion Nov 5/07 at Dec 17 scan show one tumor despair the 2nd and 3th diminish Doc said great results until March/08 ct scan show progression 03-05-08 start tykerb & xeloda

Dear Sheila - been watching this thread and wondering what can be done about those stubborn nodes. What drugs are effective for organs seem to get by the nodes.
The nodes problem seems to be special. I have a friend with nodes that keep coming bouncing back and she is holding well with Tykerb. That was after Navelbine/Herceptin/Femara, Xeloda/Herceptin/Femara, Avastin/Abraxane, and now a year on Tykerb. This has been over about a 10-year period.
I also wonder if you need a biopsy to see if the path has changed. Seems I heard that Taxol can be an instigator this way.
I know that my 8 months on weekly Taxol were pretty hard on me and I was glad for the rest and opportunity to get rid of some of the side effects!

MY STORY SO FAR ~~~~
Found suspicious lump 9/2000
Lumpectomy, then node dissection and port placement
Stage IIB, 8 pos nodes of 18, Grade 3, ER & PR -
Adriamycin 12 weekly, taxotere 4 rounds
36 rads - very little burning
3 mos after rads liver full of tumors, Stage IV Jan 2002, one spot on sternum
Weekly Taxol, Navelbine, Herceptin for 27 rounds to NED!
2003 & 2004 no active disease - 3 weekly Herceptin + Zometa
Jan 2005 two mets to brain - Gamma Knife on Jan 18
All clear until treated cerebellum spot showing activity on Jan 2006 brain MRI & brain PET
Brain surgery on Feb 9, 2006 - no cancer, 100% radiation necrosis - tumor was still dying
Continue as NED while on Herceptin & quarterly Zometa
Fall-2006 - off Zometa - watching one small brain spot (scar?)
2007 - spot/scar in brain stable - finished anticoagulation therapy for clot along my port-a-catheter - 3 angioplasties to unblock vena cava
2008 - Brain and body still NED! Port removed and scans in Dec.
Dec 2008 - stop Herceptin - Vaccine Trial at U of W begun in Oct. of 2011
STILL NED everywhere in Feb 2014 - on wing & prayer
7/14 - Started twice yearly Zometa for my bones
Jan. 2015 checkup still shows NED
2015 Neuropathy in feet - otherwise all OK - still NED.
Same news for 2016 and all of 2017.
Nov of 2017 - had small skin cancer removed from my face. Will have Zometa end of Jan. 2018.

Sorry to hear the Taxol quit working. I'm on Cisplatin and Ixabepilone for the same reason, but Taxol did not last nearly as long for me. Perhaps this combo would work for you. Of course there are many other choices out there. Please let us know how you make out and what you and the doc decide. I'll be hopin' and praying for them to come up with just the right stuff for you.
