Found my positive outlet
Hi All,
I know I don't post much (mostly I have no advice to give) but please know that I check in frequently and pray often for all of you. I even follow a blog these days...CoolBreeze....
I wanted to share with you all (because I know you will love this) what I have been doing with my way to much spare time.
I have put into motion my 8 year old daughters (Michelle) idea to give back. We have begun to make CHEMO bags. As per Michelle CHEMO now stands for Caring. Helping. Encouraging. Motivating. Others. I love that child.
Our goal was to give 60 bags to the infusion center at the hospital where I am being treated by May 1, 2013 and thanks to some very generous donations we will reach this goal...plus 48 more. Originally I had thought this idea would be a once and done thing but once I made my intentions known (on Jan 1)my snowball idea became an avalanche.
Before I could blink twice and twitch my nose we created a website, a facebook page, recieved enough money to get us started and an offer for pro bono work to get Michelle's idea into a legal non profit organization here in PA. And it's only Jan 15. Good grief.
This whole endeavor puts a smile on my once frowning and sad face. I feel GOOD giving back. In a way that can only make sense to people who know what I am going thru, "giving back" is my way of honoring all those who "gave" to me. Like you. And you. And you!

Dec 5, 2012: Started radiation
Dec. 10, 2012: MUGA 65%
Dec. 13, 2012: Turned 40. BEST BIRTHDAY EVER!
Jan 23, 2013: Last radiation. Told I am NED. Continue Herceptin every three weeks till July 2013.
Jan 29, 2013: Begin 5 years of Tamoxifen.
Feb 28, 2013: CT Scan with Contrast of lungs. 5mm and 4mm nodules of unknown origin. Rescan in 3 months.
Mar 6, 2013: EF 60%
May 8, 2013: Exanders out, implants implanted...abd. lipo and fat moved up. Girls are looking good!
June 3, 2013: CT Scan with Contrast of lungs. Previous nodules gone. New nodules (2mm and 3mm) found. Rescan in 3 months. So sorry I opened this can of worms...
June 11, 2013: EF 60%
June 25, 2013: Last Herceptin. wow...
Aug 20, 2013: Tumor markers within normal limits. Xray to sore left ribs shows no disease or fractures.
Sept 9, 2013: CT of lungs shows no disease. Closing this can of worms and moving on.
Nov 20, 2013: Tumor markers within normal limits. Severe Vit D deficiency, started on prescription Vit. D. Blaming chemo for this.
Feb 2014: Tumor markers within normal limits.
May 2014: Tumor markers within normal limits. Graduated to twice yearly onc appts.
Oct 2014: Tumor markers within normal limits.
May 2015: Tumor markers WNL. Bone density scan fine. Bone scan and xray of ribs shows "something" 4th right rib. Could be healed fracture but if it is healed why does it hurt?
Nov 2015: Tumor markers WNL. Follow up bone scan clear.
Feb 2016: Syncope! WTF? Dizzy too. Brain scan clear, ECHO EF 60%, Halter Monitor shows heart is fine. Viral? I will never know.
June 2016: Tumor markers WNL.
Oct 2016: Stabbing pain right eye. Long story short, trigeminal neuralgia.
Nov 2016 Brain MRI clear.
Jan 2017: Tumor markers WNL, still getting weird pain right rib area, and sometimes right upper chest. Xray x2, Bone Scan, Breast MRI all clear. Scar tissue? Rads. I may never know.

What a wonderful and generous person you are and you're little daughter has such a wonderful and generous mind. I couldn't even think of a better idea. What's in a chemo bag? Mints, water, crossword puzzels or am I off base?
I think this idea, you and your daughter are incredible. Thanks for sharing.

Becky you are not off base at all! All those things plus hand crafted hats and scarves. Bottled water. Candles. Pens. Journals. Note cards. Lotion. Hand Sanitizer. soap . Pez (don't we all love that? ) . anything someone is willing to donate. The bags are light tan (gender neutral) and will have Michelle's hand drawn rising sun silk screened on them. I'm very excited about this and so proud of my girl!

Wow, it's amazing what can come from such a horrible situation. I know amazing kids come from amazing mothers. How proud you must be.

This is a truly wonderful idea and a way to show other survivors that you care about them. I get an infusion every three weeks, but I'd like to know what I can donate to the chemo bags. I visited your FB page, and think that beige-colored bags were a great idea because men also get breast cancer.
I love Bethlehem and have a friend who lives there.
What can I contribute to the chemo bags?

Diagnosed stage 2b in July 2003 (2.3 cm, HER2+, ER-/PR-, 7+ nodes). Treated with mastectomy (with immediate DIEP flap reconstruction), AC + T/Herceptin (off label). Cancer advanced to lung in Jan. 2007 (1 cm nodule). Started Herceptin every 3 weeks. Lung wedge resection April 2007. Cancer recurred in lung April 2008. RFA of lung in August 2008. 2nd annual brain MRI in Oct. 2008 discovered 2.6 cm cystic tumor in left frontal lobe. Craniotomy Oct. 2008 (ER-/PR-/HER2-) followed by targeted radiation (IMRT). Coughing up blood Feb. 2009. Thoractomy July 2009 to cut out fungal ball of common soil fungus (aspergillus) that grew in the RFA cavity (most likely inhaled while gardening). No cancer, only fungus. Removal of tiny melanoma from upper left arm, plus sentinel lymph node biopsy in Feb. 2016. Guardant Health liquid biopsy in Feb. 2016 showed mutations in 4 subtypes of TP53. Repeat of Guardant Health biopsy in Jana. 2021 showed 3 TP53 mutations, BRCA1 mutation and CHEK2 mutation. Invitae genetic testing showed negative for all of these. Living with MBC since 2007. Stopped Herceptin Hylecta (injection) treatment in March 2020. Recent 2021 annual CT of chest, abdomen and pelvis and annual brain MRI showed NED. Praying for NED forever!!

Feb'09-June'09 tumor markers coming down again from 155 to 84
May'09 blood clots in lungs vena cava filter put in..Heparin shots daily for now.

Thank you for the offer. If you check the "donation" page on the website you will see a list of possible items. So far I have collected water, hats, scarves and Pez. I think dollar store items such as crossword puzzle books, pens, hand sanitizer, soap would be good too. If you are crafty (I have a friend making candles and a friend making ornaments) then whatever you create would be great. Plus note cards, small journals...the list goes on.
I want to make the bags gender neutral so that they can be given to anyone undergoing chemo, not just people with breast cancer. Also the hospital where I am treated (Lehigh Valley Hospital) has a pediatric cancer ward and I would eventually like to make bags for the kids too. Crayola is just around the corner from me...
Bethlehem is a nice town, let me know if you ever come this way to visit.

June 1st, 2013: Started Aromasin for 5 yrs.
July 15, 2013: Switched to Letrozole (Femara). Probably for the rest of my life
October 16, 2013: Exchange surgery
October 31, 2013: Finished Herceptin
December 5, 2013: Port removed

We've been doing this at my hospital but for breast cancer patients only. It really makes such an impact on those that are starting out. They just don't have to worry about knowing what to bring. I love that yours are gender neutral, that's so great!

AC started 12/2011 ended 1/2012
Taxol + Herceptin weekly for 12 weeks ended 4/2012
30 zaps of radiation done 6/2012
Tamoxifen 6/2012
every 3 weeks of Herceptin for another year.

CT Scans + ultrasound of abdomen CLEAR-5/13
02/2015 through 11/2015 emergency D&Cs for Tamoxifen induced uterine polyps which caused uncontrollable hemorrhaging
12/2015 blood clot to left leg caused by Tamoxifen. No longer taking it. On Xarelto, a blood thinner
12/2015 Ablation to prevent hemorrhaging from potential issues with Tamoxifen residue in my system
1/2016 continuing journey without hormonal therapy. Reevaluating the option of a hysterectomy and oopherectomy.
4/1/2018 2mm stroke. Yes, stroke! No cause ever found but they believe it was a migraine that went bonkers and created a tiny clot. No deficits. I was back to normal with 24hrs. Now on baby aspirin for life.
7/27/2018 hysterectomy and oopherectomy
01/07/2019 Mastectomy and expanders put in
3/22/2019 Vtach, almost died. Cause unknown.
7/22/2019 New perky boobs put in
7/21/2020 Off of all drugs but a baby aspirin because of the stroke in 2018.

I am not surprised at all that a daughter being raised by YOU is so caring and wonderful! The apple didn't fall far from that tree...for certain!

1/27/13 Radiation necrosis - edema in brain - back on steroids - but not back to work - off balance, poor cordination in right arm
5/3/13 Start Avastin to shrink necrosis
5/10/13 begin weaning steroids
6/18/13 Brain MRI - Avastin seems to be working!
6/20/13 quarterly CT - chest, abdomen, pelvis - All Clear!
7/5/13 finally off steroids!!
7/7/13 joined the ranks of the CHEMO NINJAS I am now Tekuto Ki Ariku cancer assassin!
7/13/13 Symptoms return - back on steroids
7/26/13 Back on Avastin - try again!
8/26/13 Not ready to return to classroom yet :( But I CAN walk without holding onto things! :)
9/9/13 Brain MRI - fingers crossed

What a wonderful idea!!! I saw something similar during the CNN heroes show at the end of the year. A girl in Orange County with a brain tumor came up with the idea of distributing jars of goodies to kids fighting chemo. Hey, if she can be nominated to be a CNN hero, so can you and your daughter! ER+ (30%)/PR-/HER-2+, stage 3
Diagnosed on 02/18/09 at 38 with a huge 12x10 cm tumor, after a 6 month delay. Told I was too young and had no risk factors. Found swollen node during breastfeeding.
March-August 09: neo-adjuvant chemo, part of a trial at Stanford (4 DD A/C, 4 Taxotere with daily Tykerb), loading dose of Herceptin
08/12/09 - bye bye boobies (bilateral mastectomy)
08/24/09 - path report shows 100 % success in breast tissue (no cancer there, yay!), 98 % success in lymphatic invasion, and even though 11/13 nodes were still positive, > 95 % of the tumor in them was killed. Hoping for the best!
September-October 09: rads with daily Xeloda
02/25/10 - Cholecystectomy
05/27/10 - Bone scan clear
06/14/10 - CT scan clear, ovarian cyst found
07/27/10 - Done with Herceptin!
02/15/11 - MVA-BN HER-2 vaccine trial
03/15/11 - First CA 15-3: 12.7 and normal, yay!
10/01/11 - Bone scan and CT scan clear, fatty liver found
now on Tamoxifen and Aspirin

Thank you bejuce for sharing that story with me. Michelle saw on TV "Matt's Chemo Bags" in the fall ( www.mattschemobags.com, I think) and said well we can do this mommy. Except not just for breast cancer, for all cancer. And for kids too.
I hope to expand this into making bags for the kids too...that is my goal and a lot of Pez was donated!
Got a call from my infusion center today. They are very excited about this and the director says it's a "go" (in hindsight I should have checked with them first). Big (secret) news!! Lehigh Valley Hospital is on a mission to promote themselves as a comprehensive cancer center and would like to interview Michelle and I, hear our story, use us as an example that cancer isn't a big scary secret, that children can benifit from being told the truth. (we never lied to her about what was going on, but we did do our best to shield her from my "bad" days). Put us in their newsletter, along with pics of us. I don't know if this will come to pass or not (it has to go thru higher channels) but I'm so excited I could just burst. Can't wait for Michelle to get off the bus...
....then I am taking her to her dentist appt. Totally gonna hit up my beloved dentist for a bag full of Biotine samples...

Feb 28, 2013: CT Scan with Contrast of lungs. 5mm and 4mm nodules of unknown origin. Rescan in 3 months.
Mar 6, 2013: EF 60%
May 8, 2013: Exanders out, implants implanted...abd. lipo and fat moved up. Girls are looking good!
June 3, 2013: CT Scan with Contrast of lungs. Previous nodules gone. New nodules (2mm and 3mm) found. Rescan in 3 months. So sorry I opened this can of worms...
June 11, 2013: EF 60%
June 25, 2013: Last Herceptin. wow...
Aug 20, 2013: Tumor markers within normal limits. Xray to sore left ribs shows no disease or fractures.
Sept 9, 2013: CT of lungs shows no disease. Closing this can of worms and moving on.
Nov 20, 2013: Tumor markers within normal limits. Severe Vit D deficiency, started on prescription Vit. D. Blaming chemo for this.
Feb 2014: Tumor markers within normal limits.
May 2014: Tumor markers within normal limits. Graduated to twice yearly onc appts.
Oct 2014: Tumor markers within normal limits.
May 2015: Tumor markers WNL. Bone density scan fine. Bone scan and xray of ribs shows "something" 4th right rib. Could be healed fracture but if it is healed why does it hurt?
Nov 2015: Tumor markers WNL. Follow up bone scan clear.
Feb 2016: Syncope! WTF? Dizzy too. Brain scan clear, ECHO EF 60%, Halter Monitor shows heart is fine. Viral? I will never know.
June 2016: Tumor markers WNL.
Oct 2016: Stabbing pain right eye. Long story short, trigeminal neuralgia.
Nov 2016 Brain MRI clear.
Jan 2017: Tumor markers WNL, still getting weird pain right rib area, and sometimes right upper chest. Xray x2, Bone Scan, Breast MRI all clear. Scar tissue? Rads. I may never know.

LeahM, I am so excited for you and Michelle! I started something similar when I finished AC. We are now in the process of filing for a 501c(3) and launching our website. If ever you need to use us (let say an entity wants to donate only to a valid 501c(3)), just let me know. I would be super happy to help out a fellow HER2+ sister.
