The Abraxane is the same actual medication as Taxol, but the solvent used to deliver the medication is much less toxic! Most of the side effects of the taxanes are caused by the solvents or carriers not from the actual medication.
Thanks so much for this clarification! I was on Taxol/navelbine + herceptin for weekly treatments spanning 7 months to kill my liver mets. My deep tendon reflexes are GONE! Med onc says it is from the taxol (plus some lingering neuropathy in the ends of my fingers) and remarked at my last visit that he would not want to give me Taxol if I have mets again, but something else. He did not name anything, but it great to know about this alternative!
I have been NED for 19 months and have no other side effects with exception of fatigue and lack of stamina.
If I had been on the Navelbine only, my side effects would be much less, I have been told. I would take it again, it is a GOOD drug!
