Acupuncture for Neuropathy

I experienced some neuropathy in my feet during my first round of chemo, and while the neuropathy is gone, I have two toes that are still numb. It didn’t bother me during the summer, as I was wearing sandals, but now that the weather is colder, and I’m wearing closed shoes, it’s bothering me. Someone recommended acupuncture, and I’m wondering if any of you have tried acupuncture for numbness caused by neuropathy, and, if so, did it work? I have some coverage for acupuncture under my insurance policy, but not a lot, and I don’t want to spend the money on it if it’s not going to work for me.

02/16 – Surgery - left breast mastectomy and 16 lymph nodes removed (8 had cancer)
02/16 – CT scan done – small nodules on lung but Doctor advises it’s normal. They will continue to monitor just in case.
03/16 – Meet radiation oncologist and find out results of Pathology Report. I’m told that I have locally advanced breast cancer, based on the size of my tumour (7 cm!) and the fact that they found cancer cells in eight lymph nodes. Also told that I’m HER 2 positive, and that my cancer is stage 3, grade 2.
03/16 – Meet oncologist and am told that my cancer is actually grade 3, and that I should have done chemo before surgery. Too late now!
03/16 – Start first of six doses of chemo (Carboplatin and Docetaxal) and Herceptin (for one year).
04/16 – Have port put in.
04/16 – Get second dose of chemo, but Docetaxal is left out due to liver enzymes being high. I was unable to get a full dose of Docetaxal after my first treatment.
06/16 – Finished chemo! One month off and then I start radiation.
06/16 – Start Tamoxifen
07/16 – First radiation treatment – 24 more to go!
08/16 – Went for Genetic Testing to see if I have the BRCA gene
08/16 – Radiation oncologist biopsies “scar tissue” on my scar.
08/16 – I am told that I have a “local recurrence” and need to have rush surgery.
09/16 – Meet surgeon who advises that I need to meet with a plastic surgeon, as they will need to do a skin graft to close me up after surgery.
09/16 – Go for rush ultrasound, bone scan, breast MRI and CT scan.
09/16 – Meet plastic surgeon and all looks good. A surgery date is set for October.
09/16 – Meet oncologist who advises that ultrasound and bone scan look good, and that MRI shows three small masses at surgery site, but lymph nodes are clear. Still awaiting the results of the CT scan, but we are positive it will look good.
09/16 – Get a call from my oncologist, who advises that CT scan shows small spots on my lungs, and a large lymph node in the middle of my chest. This means the cancer has spread! She looks into getting me funded for TDM1 and cancels my surgery.
10/16 – Meet oncologist, who advises that I have to take Perjeta before I can take TDM1. I start Perjeta/Herceptin every three weeks for an indefinite amount of time, and Taxol, which I will take two weeks on, one off for 8-16 treatments.
10/16 – Stop Tamoxifen

10/16 – Waiting for brain MRI to confirm that cancer has not spread to brain!

My doctor advises that this could mean two things: (1) that the treatment is working, and the tumours are shrinking, or (2), that I'm one of those people who never get elevated CEA levels. Given that some people never get an elevated CEA level, this test doesn’t seem very accurate to me!
11/16 – CT Scan scheduled for November 22. I can’t wait to find out if the Perjeta is working!

I tried acupuncture a few weeks ago after damaging my toe (caught on door) - Not broken but extremely swollen. While there I told Acupuncturist that I had stiffness in my leg and back. I was unsure whether stiffness due to bone met or slight back problem. He suggested acupuncture, massage and cupping for it. When I left I had less swelling in toe - he worked on nerves in that area - and I was walking easier. Definitely felt the benefit of it although for 4 days after I was exhausted. When I saw him 2 weeks later I told him about my reaction - he said this was because my immune system weak and that treatment would help it. Not sure whether I believe all but I do feel better so going to continue going every few weeks.
Re nerve damage in toe - no pain and can wear shoes without discomfort. My Sister did same thing 6 months ago and didn't have any treatments on it and is still in pain!!

Reckon there's something to this and worth a try!!

Thanks Juls. I think I’ll make an appointment at the clinic where I got for physio and massage therapy, and see if it helps. I guess it can’t hurt, I just don’t want to spend the money on something that doesn’t work.

I had pins and needles in my hand due to pinched nerve in my upper spine. It went on for months and did not respond to PT. I went to acupuncture 4 times, and it was gone.

Thanks Whonoze. It’s good to know that acupuncture worked for you. I made an appointment for November 14, however, I’m going to call today to see if I can get an earlier appointment date. The problem is, I need an evening appointment, as I’m already taking so much time off work for treatment, and cant’ take more time off for acupuncture, however, everyone wants an evening appointment for the same reasons. It’s hard to get an appointment for after work, but I’m going to see if they can put me on a waiting list in case someone cancels. I hope acupuncture works for me.

The neuropathy in my feet has been getting worse with every treatment of Taxol, and last night, I had horrible muscle spasms in my feet during most of the evening. I kept having to get up and walk around on my tip-toes in order to stop the spasms, and, I had to sleep with my knees up and feet flat on the bed, or else my feet would start to spasm. I took magnesium, which has helped a little bit, and I’m going to try acupuncture next Monday, but in the meantime, I was wondering if anyone can recommend anything to help with the neuropathy and spasms? The spasms are actually worse, so any recommendation would be appreciated.

I am really looking forward to hearing how acupuncture works for you. Any time I extend my feet, point or curl my toes <spasm>. It was funny for a few times but it's painful and disruptive now that it's a regularly thing. Takes my breath away and brings curses to my lips. Makes me very conscious of my positioning.

I’ll keep you posted Tracey. I hope it does work for me, as it’s hard to wear closed shoes or boots right now. As soon as I put them on, my feet start to spasm. I can change into sandals at work, which are easier to wear, but it’s too cold to wear sandals outside.

I’ve also increased my magnesium in-take, and that has helped. Another tip, which sounds like and old wives tale, is to put a bar of soap under your sheets at the bottom of your bed. Apparently soap contains magnesium which is released into the air while you’re sleeping at night. This is supposed to help with leg/foot cramps and spasms. It may not work, but since it can’t hurt you, I figured I might as well try it.

I was also told to try soap under sheets. Thought it was a joke but apparently it works!

I’ve been using soap for a little while, but I can’t tell if it’s working or not, as I’m also taking extra magnesium supplements. I’m not sure if it’s the extra supplements that are helping, or the soap at the end of the bed. The spasms in my feet stopped on Friday, and the numbness started to subside this morning. Of course, I have chemo again tomorrow, so it will start all over again next week! I have acupuncture tonight, so I’m hoping it helps.

I’ve decided that I’m going to ask my doctor if I can take a month break from chemo after my December 6 treatment. I would only be missing one dose of chemo, on December 20, as the clinic is closed on December 27, which is when my next chemo treatment would have been. Since I’m already missing that treatment, I don’t think missing chemo on December 20 will be a big deal. I would like to be able to enjoy the holidays without having to deal with chemo side-effects, and since I’m flying to my parent’s home on December 22, I would like to make sure my white count is normal. I don’t want to have to have to deal with flying with my Neupogen needles. It would just make things so much easier for me if I could take a break over the holidays. I hope my doctor agrees.

My doctor advises that this could mean two things: (1) that the treatment is working, and the tumours are shrinking, or (2), that I'm one of those people who never get elevated CEA levels. Given that some people never get an elevated CEA level, this test doesn’t seem very accurate to me! Asked for PET scan, but am told I don’t qualify.
10/16 – Brain MRI – NED!
11/16 - CA-15-3 blood test – Tumour markers are normal at 19.
11/16 – CT Scan scheduled for November 22. I can’t wait to find out if the Perjeta is working!

Good to hear that magnesium &/or soap is working.

Hope your Onc gives you a break over Xmas.

I think magnesium is worth taking. Magnesium etc not routinely tested here (UK) & I think it should be - just ordered the book "The magnesium miracle" by Carolyn Dean. Will update if its of interest.
I have been researching magnesium, Vit D & Vit K.
Amongst others - Jeff Bowles book on Vit D is worth a read!
I am now taking a few supplements - Spurred on my Andrea Barnett Budin posts on this site.

Good luck with acupuncture - would love to know how you get on with it. I had very strong reaction to it & think it helps. So hoping to get another appt for it soon!

I don’t think it will be an issue either, and I’m going to insist on the break unless they tell me it’s “life or death” that I get chemo on December 20th. They don’t seem to have a problem postponing chemo when it’s convenient for them, so I don’t think it will be a problem postponing chemo when it’s convenient for me. Besides, I will only be missing two doses of chemo, which is considered one treatment as they are back to back.

02/16 – Surgery - left breast mastectomy and 16 lymph nodes removed (8 had cancer).
02/16 – CT scan done – small nodules on lung but Doctor advises it’s normal. They will continue to monitor just in case.
03/16 – Meet radiation oncologist and find out results of Pathology Report. I’m told that I have locally advanced breast cancer, based on the size of my tumour (7 cm!) and the fact that they found cancer cells in eight lymph nodes. I’m also told that I’m HER 2 positive, and that my cancer is stage 3, grade 2.
03/16 – Meet oncologist and am told that my cancer is actually grade 3, and that I should have done chemo before surgery. Too late now!
03/16 – Start first of six doses of chemo (Carboplatin and Docetaxal) and Herceptin (for one year).
04/16 – Have port put in.
04/16 – Get second dose of chemo, but Docetaxal is left out due to liver enzymes being high. I was unable to get a full dose of Docetaxal after my first treatment.
06/16 – Finished chemo! One month off and then I start radiation.
06/16 – Start Tamoxifen.
07/16 – First radiation treatment – 24 more to go!
08/16 – Went for Genetic Testing to see if I have the BRCA gene.
08/16 – Radiation oncologist biopsies “scar tissue” on my scar.

I went for my first acupuncture treatment on Monday. The guy administering the treatment told me that acupuncture only works with 30% of people who are experiencing chemo based neuropathy. He also told me that if it was going to work for me, I would know after three treatments. So, I booked two more treatments, and, if it hasn’t worked by then, I won’t continue. That being said, I think it is already working for me. As soon as he took the needles out, I started feeling a tingling sensation in my numb toes, and, although my feet are not 100% right now, they are much better. I had chemo again yesterday, so I’ll have to see if it gets worse again this week. I will keep you posted regarding whether it continues to work for me or not.

How did you feel after acupuncture? I felt strange for 4 days after!
Apparently when I was having treatment my toes were twitching - I wasn't aware of this!

Overall, I felt fine after treatment. There was one spot on my lower leg, where he has put a needle, that was sore for a few hours after, but otherwise, I didn’t feel anything.

I may have spoke too soon about the acupuncture working for me, as the foot spasms came back last night. That being said, I’m not sure if acupuncture will help with spasms as well as neuropathy, and they were not as bad as they were last Thursday. I’m still increasing my magnesium intake, so that may be helping as well. On top of that, the neuropathy in my hands are getting worse with each treatment. Before now, the neuropathy in my hands were not that bad, but with each treatment it seems to be getting worse.

Maybe after next appt it will be better!

I take B6 to prevent neuropathy. I only have very very slight numbness to fingertips. Might be worth a try.

My daughter has neuropathy & muscle tightness and takes magnesium (by injection). She says it really helps. (The injection has other minerals as well - called a myers cocktail!)
