Mom had a power port put in Tuesday. Turns out that's the only one they "install". So far, minor discomfort on the decline. Good point about checking ahead of time to get a nurse/tech on board who is port-able. mom will have labs, PET glucose, 2 infusions and circulating tumor cell test draws next week. Will probably appreciate the lack of poking, I mean "venipuncture".

Hi Rich66, I was just told yesterday by my chemo nurse there will be no problems with labs. Instead of going to the lab for blood draws...I will now check-in the infusion room & the chemo nurses will be doing it from now on. (So one problem solved.) Very good idea to check in advance to make sure someone knows how to access power port. As you know with your Mother...thats alot of unnecessary poking & stabbing of veins when we have power port...I would think most cancer centers would have people trained to use these...but it doesn't always seem to be the case.

That's nice to hear your Mom gets the CTC test...I can't get anyone to run the Her2 serum, or CTC and I am stage IV.

9-28-09 Loading dose of Herceptin & started Zometa
9-29-09 Power Port Placement
10-24-09 Mass 6.4 x 4.7 cm on Rt. femur head.
11-19-09 RT. Femur surgery - Rod placed
12-7-09 Navelbine added to Herceptin/Zometa.
3-23-10 Ten days of rads to RT femur. Completed.
4-05-10 Quit Navelbine--Herceptin/Zometa alone.
5-4-10 Appt. with Dr. Slamon to see what is next? Waiting on FISH results from femur biopsy.
Results to FISH was unsuccessful--this happens less then 2% of the time.
7-7-10 Recurrence to RT axilla again. Back to UCLA for options.

Do you want some pubmed abstracts etc that point to the utility of the serum and CTC tests? Might take it out of the realm of "I heard somewhere on the web about ___"

Rich, Sure...that would be great! I can probably go dig some up before my next appt to show my onc. I would of done it by now but I've spent so much time researching so much about my recurrence, chemo's, TDM1 trials, & the list goes on. Its all so time consuming as I know I don't have to tell you.

Brenda 52; advanced Psoriatic arthritis; etc., etc., etc.
Just got my power port two weeks ago. My vascular surgeon installed it and there was an unusual amount of pain afterward and for about one week until I realized that if a woman does not have the right kind of bra, with good support, there is pulling on the tissue.
At this point I am waiting to resume my Remicade treatments without the two hour let's find the vein game.

Other than that, I only notice it when I bend over or towards the right but that is to be expected since the insertion is so recent.
