Sternum Issue ??

I thought it was this baord that someone had mentioned they had issues with the Sternum? Can you tell me about it?

I have this big lump that seems to be getting bigger and it does hurt, when I am sitting it seems to feel like it is digging into me. This just started about 3 weeks ago.

I have my 1st follow up appt. with my Onc next week since finishing Herceptin the end of August.

I just hope my Onc doesn't think I am crazy and need "happy pills", as this is a issue that has me very concerned.

Begin Chemo 5-2-05 4XAC Dose Dense , 4X Abraxane Dose Dense (ended August 05)
28 Rad's ended October 13 2005
Started Herceptin Weekly August 2005 for one year
Had a Simple mastectomy left side after Mamo showed incresed micro-calcifications. Jan. 17 2006.
Brain MRI Feb.2006--All Clear
August 28, 2006 Last Weekly Herceptin.
October 2006--Colonoscopy, 6 Polyp's removed--all B9
PET Scan July 2007
Abdominal MRI Oct. 2007---2 Right Kidney Cysts
Core Biopsy-- Lump on Scar Line 1-10-08---B9
Brain MRI 6-2008--All Clear
PET/CT Scan 6-2008
Sept. 8 2008, 4CM area removed from mastectomy scar line. Proved to be B9.
PET/CT Scan-- July 2009 --All clear
August 17,2009 ---Had Port Removed
6 Years NED -- April 5,2011
DX'd with Melanoma left arm 10-10-2011

I believe the Italian girl had sternum issues. Her Avatar was a cartoon cat (black and white). She had a sternum replacement with Goretex material.


You can probably find her via the member list by looking at the avatars.

Hope this helps as she is the only one I can think of.

Found lump via BSE
Diagnosed 8/04 at age 45
1.9cm tumor, ER+PR-, Her2 3+(rt side)
2 micromets to sentinel node
Stage 2A
left 3mm DCIS - low grade ER+PR+Her2 neg
lumpectomies 9/7/04
4DD AC followed by 4 DD taxol
Used Leukine instead of Neulasta
35 rads on right side only
4/05 started Tamoxifen
Started Herceptin 4 months after last Taxol due to
trial results and 2005 ASCO meeting & recommendations
Oophorectomy 8/05
Started Arimidex 9/05
Finished Herceptin (16 months) 9/06
Arimidex Only
Prolia every 6 months for osteopenia

NED 18 years!

Hi Yorkiegirl

Regardless of the outcome, your description of the problem and your history is reasonably concerning and should be carefully investigated and evaluated by your doctors.

Sometimes it is hard to get a feel for what is credible and what isn't, especially if you are trying hard not to be a complainer.

where on the sternum is it?

is it right in the middle or near where the sternum joins the ribs. If the latter, it could be costochondritis, a painful but totally benign condition entirely ,unrelated to your cancer**. There is a small amount of motion in the joint to deep pusiing which should help you identify the joint and differentiate it from the breastbone itself.

**that said, it could well be that this condition is more likely post-radiation

Is it near the top, bottom, right side, left side and which breast had the tumor? What surgical and radiation treatment did you have?

I am certainly not an oncologist,nor do I have personal experience of this, but happy to try to gather information for you
