Re: Turmeric

Just getting on this as I haven't been on the board in a while. I take 300 mg. (Solaray brand with 95% curcumin) twice a day, for a total of 600 mg.

But, I also sprinkle turmeric on my oatmeal (weird, I know! I've gotten used to it and like the color and taste), along with lots of pepper when I'm cooking it. I event put a splash of olive oil on top, too. Both turmeric and pepper are really great additions to many different dishes, from vegetables to rice!

Wink Re: Turmeric

Sometimes I put tumeric and pepper in my mixed veggies along with a little Extra virgin olive oil. I sprinkle cinnamon in my cereal after I take it off the stove. Then I put a big spoon of yogurt on top. Cinnamon is supposed to balance and keep glucose under control.

Re: Turmeric

my mother is taking 2400 mg a day (Life Extension Bio-Curcumin 400gm capsules x 2 after every meal)

by the way, here is an article that talks about Curcumin absorption (interview with Dr. Aggrawal himself - bioscientist who co-developed Herceptin with Dr. Salmo and also discovered Curcumin as a treatment for pancreatic cancer)

Pioneering Biochemist Bharat B. Aggarwal, PhD, of the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, on Discovering Novel and Effective Cancer Treatments
We have cancer patients at M.D. Anderson who are just on curcumin. They don’t have to be given chemotherapy or radiation, just curcumin alone, and we are witnessing significant results. There are more than 1,000 patients on curcumin right now at M.D. Anderson. Absorption of curcumin is not as big of an issue as people may think.

Re: Turmeric

Q: Is it true that there are absorption issues with curcumin and that the dosage needs to be high to produce a therapeutic affect?
A: I think there is a bit of a misconception regarding the absorption and dosage of curcumin. Remember, curcumin is a dietary agent, not a drug. It should not be tested as a drug because if dosages reach the drug level, it could become toxic. We have found that curcumin is circulated quickly and is taken up by tissues very quickly. Within 10 to 20 minutes it is already in the brain. When it is tested as a drug, ©2009 Natural Medicine Journal 1(4), December 2009 | Page 2
researchers are looking for curcumin in serum but they don’t find it because it has already been taken up by tissues. In 2008, Marczylo and colleagues demonstrated that very little curcumin was found in plasma and urine in rats after they were given curcumin; however, curcumin was found in intestinal mucosa, as well as liver, kidney, and heart tissue.
Researchers at Johns Hopkins reported that as little as 500 mg of curcumin per day resulted in a 60 percent reduction in polyps, whereas Celebrex at the same dose, which is very cardiotoxic, only resulted in less than 30 percent reduction in polyps as shown by physicians at M.D. Anderson. If bioavailability were an issue, we would not see these results. We have cancer patients at M.D. Anderson who are just on curcumin. They don’t have to be given chemotherapy or radiation, just curcumin alone, and we are witnessing significant results. There are more than 1,000 patients on curcumin right now at M.D. Anderson. Re: Turmeric

I suppose this is given as a supplement at M.D. Anderson?? I have not looked for curcumin as a supplement.

My onc has told me he puts turmeric on all kinds of foods. As an onc, I'm sure he realizes the benefits of knocking back inflamation as much as possible for a number of reasons.

I am seeing a Naturopath while going through chemo and he prescribed 2000 twice a day of Curcumin (tumeric). My Oncologist doesn't seem to care as long as I discontinue 2 days before and 2 days after.
