Suregery During Herceptin?
How's everyone doing this week?
I am loking into putting a saline implant during herceptin. The onc said ok, the plastic surgeon said ok.
However, a friend of mine at the same center was told by her doctor, different than mine, that she has to wait till after herceptin to get her implant?
These are two docs from same center that supposedly confer on cases.
I'm confused. Do you ladies know?
XO to all this week

Hi Maria-
I don't have an answer for you -though I anticipate running into the same issue in the upcoming months when I have a mastect w/reconstruction. I've been Stage IV since my primary dx 4 years ago. (After wrestling w/liver mets, I had a R hepatectomy. 8 weeks after my liver resection, I discovered a nodule in my breast-in the same spot as the original 4 years ago! There's also extensive DCIS, unlike my original dx).
Eventually, I will have the surgery and I have NO INTENTION OF STOPPING MY HERCEPTIN while healing! Different surgeons have different preferences based on their experience & knowledge.
There's no better way to get clarity than ask your doc, point blank, why his/her opinion differs from you friend's doc. I'll be looking forward to your next post w/your docs response!
Best of luck to you & Keep the Faith!
Jessica

herceptin + surgery no problem here..
I had a second mastectomy about 6 weeks ago. I have been on herceptin since Dec. 1 '05. I was home from the hospital one week before going in for my herceptin treatment. I had no problems. Even my port above the breast stayed ok! hope this helps... kim

Maria,
I had my tissue expander out and an implant put in while I was on Herceptin. I had to wait until my blood counts where all back to normal from Chemo. I didn't have any problem healing.

Hello,
I had R prophylactic mastectomy (no node dissection) and removal/placement of ports 3/3/06 while on three week Herceptin. No problems to report, healing fine and have regained strength and ROM.

I had a 9 hour surgery with 3 surgeons (proph mastectomy and bilateral SGAP reconstruction) while on herceptin with no problems whatsoever.

?= I have at least 1 basal cell skin cancer to be removed. It is below my collarbone and on the same side as my masectomy(with lymph node removal).
Is it O.K. to have it scraped or removed(since it is on that same side) ? kat in the delta/e-mail me- thanks

I had a right mastectomy (left was performed at primary diagnosis) while on 3 weekly Herceptin, with no problems whatsoever; in fact, my oncologist and surgeon were adamant that I stay on Herceptin during surgery and recovery, to prevent possible micro mets from spreading.
