Re: How Inactivity Alters the Brain

I love this topic. I think physical activity often gets pushed aside in our "diet focused" society. It is a critically important tool for health--both physical and mental. Thanks for posting, Hopeful.

Re: How Inactivity Alters the Brain

I'v had the experience on this first-hand.

After my 23-hour brain (tumor - a very rare one called Central Neurocytoma) surgery, I underwent rigorous physical therapy and occupational therapy besides speech therapy (the nerve of the vocal cord was touched - possibly by the brain swelling) Then I went back to work (too soon) and that served as a real-world rehabilitation.

When (a little more than a year later) I lost my job as a supervisor in the local public library, I sank into a deep depression and the lack of physical activity (practically locked myself inside the house - too ashamed to talk to anybody) caused 'regression' in my neurological function.

By the time I'd gotten a job again 4 months later, I couldn't stay on my feet for more than half an hour. My memory problem was so bad that I couldn't remember which customer had been taken to which table by myself (as a hostess) when I returned to the counter. The only reason why I wasn't fired was that my bi-lingual ability was still intact.

Thanks to the good food and plenty of exercise at Hunan's Chinese Restaurant, I survived ...
