Core biopsy, & no need for imaging...
For the women here that had a *core* biopsy of their orignal tumor, I was curious of how many of you had this procedure done *without* it being x-ray guided? Do surgeons ever do this procedure when the tumor/mass is big enough for them to feel it...so there is no need for imagining?

9-21-09 PET/CT "Recurrence" to Rt. axllia, Rt. femur, ilium. Possible Sacrum & liver? Now stage IV.
9-28-09 Loading dose of Herceptin & started Zometa
9-29-09 Power Port Placement
10-24-09 Mass 6.4 x 4.7 cm on Rt. femur head.
11-19-09 RT. Femur surgery - Rod placed
12-7-09 Navelbine added to Herceptin/Zometa.
3-23-10 Ten days of rads to RT femur. Completed.
4-05-10 Quit Navelbine--Herceptin/Zometa alone.
5-4-10 Appt. with Dr. Slamon to see what is next? Waiting on FISH results from femur biopsy.
Results to FISH was unsuccessful--this happens less then 2% of the time.
7-7-10 Recurrence to RT axilla again. Back to UCLA for options.

I had a large tumor and my surgeon did a core biopsy and didn't use xray guidance. They did an ultrasound right before so I don't remember if her used that or not.

Mine was ultrasound guided, 4 cm bi-lobed tumor.

Mine was a core biopsy via ultrasound. My tumor was also very large - over 5cm.

Mine also was US guided. Also big tumor 7cm. Tumor was situated in the center of breast going straight back to chest wall.

I had an bilateral breast MRI and then the core biopsy x2 the next day- unguided. My tumors were very palpable and near the skin. They were both pretty small (1.5 cm, 0.7 cm after mastectomy)- but won the cancer prize for both on the biopsy pathology.

I had a wire inserted via mammography, then left in to make sure they were getting the spot with microcalcifications when I had my biosy right after the wire was placed/

core biopsy was unguided, very palpable and close to the surface....it showed DCIS. Luckily surgeon did biopsy after showing IDC....CNB then felt like a waste of time we could have spent on a biopsy

The reason I asked this question is because a women I know that works in health care told me they *never* do core biospy's *without* it being ultrasound guided. So I googled core biospy and everything supported what she told me.
But I questioned that because I had a 3.5 cm mass & it was palpable & they *didn't* do a ultrasound guided biospy on mine? Which worried me because my biospy turned out to be a nightmare. So I started thinking no wonder it was a horrible experience...it was suppose to be done with a ultrasound to make sure you hit the right place. But I do see a few of you here did have their biospy the way I did. So I feel better knowing it IS done that way at times. If the mass is close to the surface its not necessary to do it with "US". Although I wish they had done mine that way. Thanks to all that replied.

I often felt that the core biopsy causes core track spread of cancer. How often are the palpable lumps not cancerous? The procedure is an additional burden, emotionwise, healthwise, moneywise and timewise.

Postmenopause. Arimidex only since Sept 06, bone or muscle ache after 3 month
Off Arimidex, change to Femara 1/12-07, ache stopped
Sept 07 all tests negative, pass 2 year mark
Feb 08 continue doing well.
Sep 09 four year NED still on Femara.

I had an excisional biopsy, unguided. Ultrasound done prior to surgery.
