Re: CBS Sunday Morning

I like the news that breast cancer deaths are down 35%. This seems like new information.

I also have some fruit flies that I would like to donate . . .

Yes, stem cells are acutely attuned to other cells in their microenvionment

Interesting, but the key words are "fruit flies". In-vitro cell assay experts remain to be convinced that even "mouse" tumors are all that relevant.

Yes, there are modern methods of in-vitro cell screens that can test and identify drugs that act on the microenvironment.

The microenvironment contributes critically to drug response. By examining drug-induced cell death events in native-state 3D (three dimensional) microclusters, the functional cytometric profiling platform has the unique capacity to capture stromal, cytokines (chemokines), macrophages, lymphocytes, vascular and inflammatory cell interactions with tumor cells, known to be crucial for clinical response prediction.

The microclusters recapitulate the human tumor environment, while the "3D" advancement recreates the extracellular matrix (metalloproteinases). The platform studies cancer response to drugs within this microenvironment, enabling it to provide clinically relevant predictions to cancer patients. It is this capacity to study human tumor microenvironments that distinguishes it from other platforms in the field.

What is that saying, "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink." Some researchers think they've re-invented the wheel.

The patient Mark had run out of drug treatments.
I think it was genius on their part to search out new methods
and not give up.
By created a copy of the tumor in the fruit fly, they were able to test drugs until they found a combination.

So I am hoping it does the job for him as this is already showing early signs of promise, as often happens in medical history the cures of many diseases are found in odd places.
