Metabolism and colon cancer

This Dana-Farber Cancer Institute study deals with colon cancer, but there are some interesting thoughts here for consideration along the lines of Rhonda's posts on metformin:

"The researchers hypothesized that, following surgery for stage III colon cancer, eating the combination of foods typical of a Western diet could allow residual microscopic cancer to proliferate and spread....

Western dietary patterns have been linked with higher levels of insulin and inflammatory compounds in the body, factors that may enhance tumour growth."

Question Another interesting connection

What the reliability of Wikipedia is, I leave to you to consider. However, in reviewing the natural sugar alternative called stevia on wikipedia I discovered that in Japan, stevia has been integrated into foods as a natural sweetener to a far greater degree than in other countries. Studies have indicated that Japanese women in Japan have had a lower rate of breast cancer than Japanese women in the U.S. Considering RobinP's post here regarding the great benefits of drinking black tea/green tea, and possible benefits from reducing the use of sugar in the diet, plus the natural higher consumption of fish in Japan, perhaps the Japanese have come up with simpler solutions for preventing breast cancer than most of the rest of the world. (How hard IS it for the rest of us?)
