Smile BC Awareness Month - Need ideas for promotion in mall & giveaways

I manage a regional shopping mall, and I have talked with our Marketing Director about conducting events in the mall in conjunction with the ACS. Have you gals (and guys) participated in any events that you thought increased awareness that would work in a mall setting? Also, we want to have some inexpensive giveaways available. I'm thinking of the pink bracelets. Any other ideas for giveaways that help to educate the public.

Also, any websites that you know offer the BC stuff at reasonable prices, please pass them along.

I appreciate any and all help with this.

Louise

Dear Weezie,
Funny...I work in ladies better sportswear for a Dept store chain located throughout the SE and every year I try and get them involved w BC awareness month! Wish I worked where you are!

Contacting some of the local imaging centers, womens breast centers ,regional cancer center..perhaps you can have a womens bc health day at your mall. The medical folks will bring literature, hang cards for BSE ,speakers etc if you provide the tables and venue. You can also contact your local Komen affiliate for materials,Astra Zeneca (pharmaceutical co) is good with freebies...

Best wishes,Marcia

Note from my daughter

Given that I am only familiar with Susan Komen materials, I would advise her to contact her local Susan G. Komen Affiliate to inquire on educational materials. There is a new program they are debuting this fall called "I am the cure" which has games/giveaways.

Hi weezie, every October for bc awareness month, the local Saks Fifth Avenue here (in conjunction with the Cleveland Clinic) offers about 12-15 bc survivors a free make beauty make-over and professional photo--then these lovely pictures go up on a "survivor wall" on display in the store for the month. Then the women are presented with a key necklace to symbolize the key to the cure and 2% of all purchases for a certain weekend are donated to the local Susan Komen affiliate. Its a really nice program, maybe your mall could offer something similar. They also offer an evening reception with food donated from local restaurants, shopping, and a balloon auction--you pay $50 to select a balloon, pop the balloon and inside it is a gift certificate for a pedicure, massage, store discount, etc...

Smile Breast Cancer Awareness Day at the Mall

Thank you to those who contributed ideas for a "Breast Cancer Awareness" event at the mall I manage. We are working with our local hospital, to host a "Think Pink" day on October 20, 2007. They, along with a representative from the Susan G. Komen organization will be on hand to distribute literature for breast cancer awareness. We will be encouraging our mall merchants to dress in pink in support of the day nad to put their pink merchandise out front and center. One of the hair salons will be doing a cut-a-thon. If any of you gals have some nifty ideas you would like to share, there is still time and I am all ears.

Louise,

What really goes over well is anything useable that is free. Examples, pens, pencils, key chains, butons, rubber braclets, note pads, calendars, etc. I have always found that paper material (phamplets etc) were not of much interest. This was my experience while working when I was in charge of major training sessions, conventions, etc. Best of luck to you

I was just at a fall festival and they had a booth promoting breast cancer awareness....they had pink ribbons made from a long strip of pink paper that they folded over and stapled in the middle so the ribbon was dimensional. People were invited to place the name of a breast cancer survivor past or present on the ribbon and hand the ribbon on the tree... which was a large twig tree.....it was to symbolize and honor those who have founght and lost and fought and won against this disease....it was amazing, in no time at all the bare tree was ablaze with a sea of pink ribbons. Each person who placed a ribbon, was given a ribbon made of ribbon to wear, as a reminder to promote breast health and awareness through mammograms.

Sheila, love your idea of the pink ribbon tree. I can pull out a Christmas tree and decorate it with the pink ribbons. I too have seen this done at a local hospital, but I hadn't thought about it. Great idea and very personal. Our merchants have started bringing in the merchandise, and it has been very touching. They have really responded. I have been there 11 years and most know I too am a survivor!
