Question about turmeric

I have some turmeric root extract tincture that I bought a while back, and I would like to try and add it in to my daily routine. Anyone know how much I need? It says 30-50 drops in a small glass of warm water 3 x day between meals. Does this sound to any of you knowledgable folks like a dose that can have anti-cancer activity? Or are turmeric capsules better?

I sprinkle turmeric on my salad every day. I'm sorry, I don't have much supplement knowledge. Take care and God bless.

Hi Brenda, Rhonda,

I've seen the possible anti cancer effect research on turmeric which is the active ingredient in the spice Curry. At that time I tried to figure out how much I should use converting milligrams to teaspoons and I got to the conclusion that I can use about one teaspoon minimum every day. I make curry rice often. About the extract I really do not know, but would be interested!

Odette, I do eat indian and ayurvedic food from time to time, but not as a daily diet. (I love curry, but not every day!) But I don't think it's regular enough to have a good benefit, so I want to supplement. The salad idea is good, thanks Rhonda.

I take 4 tumeric caplets a day, along with grape seed and green tea caplets. I remember reading on a site where this cancer specialist recommended this combination. I have been taking them since I was told I was NED in April of 06. My Oncologist told me I was his first Stage IV cancer patient that has been in remission for this long without having to be put back on chemo of some sort. Don't know if it's because of these pills or not but I'm too afraid to mess with a good thing...sherryg

I take two Turmeric root estract capsules a day.
I also make rice with Turmeric about twice a week.
Since I have a salad every day I will now sprinkle some on it.

You can get turmeric in a specialty store that sells food from India. They sell it in package form for use in cooking.

I also take tumeric every day - probably not enough. I take it with food because I don't want to burn my stomach.

Super Curcumin dosage: Healthy people typically take 900 mg of curcumin each day. Cancer patients often take as much as four 900-mg capsules 3 times a day for a 6- to 12-month period, reducing the dosage thereafter. Individuals with biliary tract obstruction should avoid curcumin because it enhances biliary flow from the liver. High doses of curcumin should not be taken on an empty stomach to protect against gastric irritation.
Note: The question ultimately arises as to whether curcumin is appropriate during chemotherapy. A recent study from the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill) showed that curcumin reduced the effectiveness of chemotherapy in breast cancer patients by inhibiting reactive oxygen species (Somasundaram et al. 2002). However, this agent also inhibits the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase (JNK) pathway, and because many chemotherapeutic drugs generate ROS and activate JNK in the course of inducing apoptosis, we considered the possibility that curcumin might antagonize their antitumor efficacy.
