Broncoscopy results
The good news is that there was zero infection and zero cancer cells in the bronchial wash (yippee!), even though this afternoon I coughed up more blood, about 2 tablespoons.
But I'm still very relieved about the pathology results. Your prayers and thoughts have helped me deal with this.
The pulmonologist called this morning with the final results and said the bleeding seemed to be caused by bronchiectasis. The condition was noted in the Jan. 6 PET/CT scan report.
According to Wikipedia , bronchiectasis is "destruction and widening of the large airways. A person may be born with it (congenital bronchiectasis) or may develop it later in life. Bronchiectasis is often caused by recurrent inflammation or infection of the airways." Coughing up of blood is one of the symptoms.
Bronchiectasis probably resulted from the radiofrequency ablation in combination with the wedge resection I had a year prior to the RFA.
After lunch today with two friends from my local breast cancer support group (we we're all off from work due to the holiday), I coughed up blood again.
I called the pulmonologist's office. The nurse called back and said he would call me this evening, but that I will probably have to follow up with radiation intervenion for an angiogram to determine the source of the bleeding and perhaps for cauterization. The nurse said the pulmonologist doesn't handle that procedure.
This coughing business is distressing. Today there was only a small amount of blood, but the second time there was a lot. Also, it can happen anywhere, including my 90-minute bus ride to and from work.
At least tomorrow I'm working from home because I have my Herceptin treatment at 8:00 a.m., so I won't have to travel far.
I hope the problem can be corrected, as bronchiectasis is chronic. I'll wait to hear what the pulmonologist has to say.

Diagnosed stage 2b in July 2003 (2.3 cm, HER2+, ER-/PR-, 7+ nodes). Treated with mastectomy (with immediate DIEP flap reconstruction), AC + T/Herceptin (off label). Cancer advanced to lung in Jan. 2007 (1 cm nodule). Started Herceptin every 3 weeks. Lung wedge resection April 2007. Cancer recurred in lung April 2008. RFA of lung in August 2008. 2nd annual brain MRI in Oct. 2008 discovered 2.6 cm cystic tumor in left frontal lobe. Craniotomy Oct. 2008 (ER-/PR-/HER2-) followed by targeted radiation (IMRT). Coughing up blood Feb. 2009. Thoractomy July 2009 to cut out fungal ball of common soil fungus (aspergillus) that grew in the RFA cavity (most likely inhaled while gardening). No cancer, only fungus. Removal of tiny melanoma from upper left arm, plus sentinel lymph node biopsy in Feb. 2016. Guardant Health liquid biopsy in Feb. 2016 showed mutations in 4 subtypes of TP53. Repeat of Guardant Health biopsy in Jana. 2021 showed 3 TP53 mutations, BRCA1 mutation and CHEK2 mutation. Invitae genetic testing showed negative for all of these. Living with MBC since 2007. Stopped Herceptin Hylecta (injection) treatment in March 2020. Recent 2021 annual CT of chest, abdomen and pelvis and annual brain MRI showed NED. Praying for NED forever!!

Sorry for your suffering. Glad we have avoided the big 'C' word.
Do you have access to a Chinese Herbal Medicine store? There's bound to be some listed in the New York phone book. Tell the Herbal master your problem and they should be able to get you some good stuff to make tea with.
There are more and more researches done these days to find out 'why' those medicine work. Well, it's been experimented on billions of patients and refined over 5 thousand years.
There are also other 'physical' ways to improve your breathing. My oldest Brother had caught tuberculosis in his teens and had always been a little bit on the 'weak' side. He spent over 5 years doing business in China and improved his 'lung power' practicing 'Chi-kung' ('Air' kung-fu).

Sorry for the good news/bad news. At least there is no infection and better yet, no cancer cells.
I am sure your doctors will come up with some plan that will allow your lung to heal so the bleeding will end.

Wow Joan, that sounds very scary to be coughing up blood any time any place. I'm glad you are getting some answers, and hope you can get some relief soon.

Femara for 5+ years, staying on (started with Arimidex, switched after about a month, much happier)
Abnormal brain MRI shows no cancer, but "extensive white matter diease" - unknown cause
BRCA negative - lots of cancer in my family
survivor of thyroid cancer
also have Crohn's disease
CT and bone scan say NED as of 5/13
dx with severe cardiomyopathy 5/12 (likely due to chemo and Herceptin), ejection fraction in low 20's, now up to 40, went to 50, latest read 12/13 is back down to 35
1/13 Acute pancreatitis - are you kidding me?
9/13 started Humira for Crohn's. starting to have some energy again
B12 and Vit D both needed supplementation
Cataracts in both eyes noted 6/12 - surgery in the next 2-4 years?
4/14 Kidney stones/blockage/infection - related to Crohn's Disease
5/14 My aunt passed away - she was diagnosed after I was with Stage I - not Her2+, then Stage 4 for about one year
6/14 Scans - still NED, thank God. However, broken rib (I didn't notice) lots of bone degeneration osteopenia/osteoporosis. I also still have cardiomyopathy secondary to chemo.

No normal people could write the posts we must write at times. What I mean is I am struck by how matter-of-fact we report what occurs and what we'll do and how we'll manage and most -many - almost all of the times it involves the most scary or life-threatening things. This is not a reality show - it's real life. It is so difficult and I am really struck by that as I read your post.
Joan - I send extra prayers your way for this to resolve. I have a feeling that compared to some of the things you've endured this will prove to be less difficult once they decide what to do.

Sept - now - on chemo hold for calming tummy we hope. Markers stable for 2 months.
Nov 2013 - Herceptin-Perjeta-Avastin-Xgeva (collageneous colitis, which explains tummy probs, added Entocort)
December '13 BRAIN MRI ned in da head.
Jan 2014: CONTINUING on HAPX…
FEB 2014 PetCT clinical “impression”: 1. newbie nodule - SUV 1.5 right apical nodule, mildly hypermetabolic “suggestive” of worsening neoplastic lesion. 2. moderate worsening of the sternum – SUV 5.6 from 3.8
3. increasing sclerosis & decreasing activity of L1 met “suggests” mild healing. (SUV 9.4 v 12.1 in May ‘13)
4. scattered lung nodules, up to 5mm in size = stable, no increased activity
5. other small scattered sclerotic lesions, one in right iliac and one in thoracic vertebral body similar in appearance to L1 without PET activity and not clearly pathologic
APRIL 2014 - 6 YRS POST GAMMA ZAP, 7 YRS MBC & 18 YEARS FROM ORIGINAL DX!
October 2014: hold avastin, continue HPX
Feb 2015 Cancer you lost. NEDHEAD 7 years post gamma zap miracle, 8 years ST4, +19 yrs original diagnosis.
Continue HPX. Adding back Avastin
Nov 2015 pet/ct is mixed result. L1 SUV is worse. Continue Herceptin/avastin/xgeva. Might revisit Perjeta for L1. Meantime going for rads consult for L1
December 2015 - brain stable. Continue Herceptin, Perjeta, Avastin and xgeva.
Jan 2016: 5 days, 20 grays, Rads to L1 and continue on HAPX. I’m trying to "save" TDM1 for next line. Hope the rads work to quiet L1. Sciatic pain extraordinaire :((

SCIATIC PAIN DEAL BREAKER.
3/23/16 Laminectomy w/coflex implant L4/5. NO MORE SCIATIC PAIN!!! Healing.

10/30/19 - stable brain and cord. progression lungs and bones. washing out. applying for ds8201a w nivolumab. hope they take me.
12/27/19 - begin ds8401a w nivolumab. after 2nd cycle nodes melt away. after 3rd cycle chest scan shows Improvement, brain MRI shows improvement, resolved areas & nothing new. switch to plain ENHERTU. after 4th cycle, PETscan shows mostly resolved or improved results. Markers near normal. I'm stunned but grateful.
10/26/20 - June 2021 Tucatinib/xeloda/herceptin - stable ish.
