Osteoporosis, Vit K

A year ago I only had lost 5% density when I did my test. This year I went to 10%.
I exercise, take citracal, Vit D, yoga.
So I cannot understand what happened?
Also since last year, my hand nails started cracking, splitting, did not grow, not even with every "miracle" serum out there!
At this same time, my dosage of Wellbutrin ( well, yeah, what can I say?) increased from 150mg a day to 300 mg a day, which is two tablets. Then it was reduced down back to 150mg and guess what my nails started to be healthy again.
I searched the www and could not find any side effects of bone loss or nail problems with this med. Yet it matches to the time of the increase.

I am post menopausal and hormonal levels are fairly low so I expect for my bone density to decrease but I was surprised at this rate.

Has anyone had this reaction if anyone of you are on wellbutrin?

Have you experienced increased bone density loss?

Is anyone on boniva or femara and what effect would that have on bone metastasis. I just finished reading Lani's post on denosumab (thank you Lani, excellent)

I have read that Vitamin K is good to increase bone density-all I knew is it was good for bruising, dark eye circles, that is circulatory conditions. Is anyone taking Vitamin K for this?
thank you all

Re: Osteoporosis, Vit K

I don't have any personal experience on this. But I found a link with a list of its side effects:

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/meds/a695033.html

"...Bupropion
  • Aplenzin®
  • Wellbutrin®
  • Wellbutrin® SR
  • Wellbutrin® XL
  • Zyban®
may cause other side effects. Call your doctor if you have any unusual problems while taking this medication."

Re: Osteoporosis, Vit K

Aging and bone loss go hand in hand, but with our cancer treatments we add in another hand.

Do you have your calcium a vitamin D levels checked? Some of the drugs you mention may have a negative effect on these nutrients vital to bone health.

Denosumab or another infused drug should help bump up your bone density. Sometimes we need the big gun as well as the artillery!

All the best.

Re: Osteoporosis, Vit K

Yes. I do have my D levels checked and came in nicely.
And I did read about the denosumab from Lani's posting and I will bring it up with the onc next visit.

I have NOT experienced any, any of the side effectc or potential side effects from wellputrin that is posted on any site, webmd, the drug itself and that's why I was surprised that it had this reaction on my nails.

I now also added biotin to my arsenal of supplements, since I just read is good for this. what's one more pill

thank you
