Re: Just wanted to share

to yellowtail:

hey canadian!! i am a canuck too in ottawa.
roslyn is a canuck in montreal who sent me a friendly note today.
we should start a canadian thread.

there are too many unorganized threads on this website.
I notice nobody answered your request for a translation of abbreviations. i dont have the answers either.

why do people talk in abbreviations? how can we ask them to not do that?
I tried to help the situation by creating a thread called glossary.
nobody picked up on it.

fall 2008: mammo of rt breast worrisome so am asked to redo mammo and have ultrasound of rt breast.I delay it til january 2009 and the results are "no cancer in rt breast. phew."
found plum sized lump in right breast the day before my dad died: April 17th 2011. saw it in mirror, while i was wearing a top, examining my figure after losing 10 lbs on dr. bernstein diet.
diagnosed may 10 2011

mast/lymphectomy: june 7 2011, 5/20 cancerous nodes. stage 3a before radiation oncologist during our first mtg on july 15th says he found cancer on the lymph node of my breast bone. Now stage 3b.
her2+++, EN-, PN-. Rt brst tumors:3 at onset, 4.5 cm was the big one
chemos: 3fec's followed by 3 taxotere, total of 18 wks chemo. sept: halfway thru chemo the mastectomy scar decides to open and ooze pus. (not healed before chemo) eventually with canasten powder sent by friend in ny (illegal in canada) it heals.
radiations:although scheduled to begin 25 january 2012, I am so terrified by it (rads cause other cancers) I don't start til february, miss a bunch, reschedule them all and finally finish 35 rads mid april. reason for 7 extra atop the 28 scheduled is that when i first met my rads oncologist he said he saw a tumor on the lymph node of my breastbone. extra 7 are special kind of beam used for that lymphnode. rads onc tells me nobody ever took so long to do rads so he cannot speak for effectiveness. trials had been done only on consecutive days so......we'll see.....
10 mos of herceptin started 6 wks into chemo. canadian onc says 10 mos is just as effective as the full yr recommended by dr. slamon......so we'll see..completed july 2012.
Sept 18 2012: reconstruction and 3 drains. fails. i wear antibiotic pouch on my job for two months and have 60 consecutive days visiting a nursing centre where they apply burn victims' silver paper and clean the oozing infection daily. silicone leaks out daily. plastic surgeon in caribbean. emergency dept wont remove "his" work. He finally appears and orders me in into an emergency removal of implant. I make him promise no drains and I get my way. No infection as a result. Chest looks like a map of Brazil. Had a perfectly good left breast on Sept 17th but surgeon wanted to "save another woman an operation" ? so he had crashed two operations together on my left breast, foregoing the intermediary operation where you install an expander. the first surgeon a year earlier had flat out refused to waste five hours on his feet taking both boobs. flat out refusal. between the canadian health system saving money and both these asses, I got screwed. who knows when i can next get enough time off work (i work for myself and have no substitute when my husband is on contract) to get boobs again. arrrgh.

I have a blog where I document this trip and vent.
www.nora'scancerblog.blogspot.com . I stopped the blog before radiation. I think the steroids made me more angry and depressed and i just hated reading it anymore

Re: Just wanted to share

Nora and Yellowtail,
I think the glossary thread is a great idea. I bet if we posted specific abbreviations we needed help with...on that thread...some of the more expert members would be glad to help us out.
The abbrevs sv a lot of tm! We nd 2 catch up! LoL!

Cool Re: Just wanted to share

Agreed LOL. I noticed on your bio that you have completed the same regiment as I am currently just half way complete (AC/T). I have a question about the taxol, I had my first session on Tuesday with a shot of Neulasta on Thursday and woke up with some aches in my muscles today Friday. Just curious as to how you reacted? I know that we all react differently depending on doses etc... My onc gave me some ty3's but I have not used them, just a little ache and a very cold neck probably because I have no hair haha to absorb the sweat from the flashes. This is so bizarre or surreal at time to feel normal and then to so not normal....if you can shed some tips on how you handled different situations it certainly helps. Thanks so much

Re: Just wanted to share

Marlene,
uh oh! The abbreviation bug seems to have bitten you too! ty3's!!!?? Well done!!

If you are under 50, (God forbid) your reaction to Taxol, may be similar to mine. If you are over 50, Taxol is likely to be a walk in the park. Don't know exactly why that is...don't care either. Just glad it's over!

This is my post from the "Is pain normal with Taxotere" thread. (You might want to go read that whole thread.)

My fellow survivor...
I have been where you are.
People kept telling me how strong and brave I was...and I was feeling that way too, until Taxol poisoning hit.

Oh, my Dear God!
I have never been more frightened or miserable in my life. I hesitate to call the pain a 10, because there may, actually be something worse...but it was pegged at 9 out of 10, for days!

After 2 rounds of that...I told my onc., "If there isn't a way to manage the pain better, I can't do this again. The pain is more than I can bear." I was actually more afraid of the pain, than I was of the cancer at that point!

It was only then that 'magically', Advil was no longer out of the question. You might want to try that same tactic. The combo of the advil (600mg every 6 hours) AND the narcotic (oxycodone is what I took) made the pain something I could tolerate. It only ever went down to 2 or 3, like a headache, but at least I didn't have to stop treatment.

In hindsight, I realize that "being strong" doesn't mean suffering without complaining...it sometimes means complaining until someone helps you stop suffering!!

Please...insist that the doctor finds a way to help you manage the pain. It's his job. And, more importantly, you deserve it.
You're entitled to good pain management!

Please let us know how you make out, I'll be thinking of you.
Denise

And, of course, if you have any questions you don't feel comfortable posting, please feel free to send me a private message any time. I'll be praying for you this weekend...just in case "Taxol Poisoning" strikes. Let me know how you make out!
Denise
PS-Neulasta can give you aches too. Is this the first time you've had it?

PPS- it should be against some natural law to have hot flashes followed by chills...just as I've always thought that zits and wrinkles should not be able to coexist on the same face!!

Re: Just wanted to share

Thanks for making me laugh as I pour my self a hot lemon and honey less the gin a make me feel better drink I usually only have when I get a cold or the flu....since this is much like that I figure why not have this drink without the gin, not the same flavour or effect but that's ok. I am going to be 50 in November so I am on the cusp, the pain is more of a 3-4 at this point however if it compounds over the treatments I will certainly complain and get some acceptable pain management like you suggest. I just had my honey rub some Voltaren on my my shoulders like A535 without the smell and intense heat, seems to be working.

What I find amazing is the spirit of women who can support one another with out even knowing one another....it is magic and I so appreciate it! Thanks for the tips

Marlene...
I think we're all glad to be able to "pay forward" the help we've gotten.
Hope you never get beyond the 3 or 4 point. And, let me be the first to wish you a Happy Birthday (in November) but I forget everything these days...so I didn't want to forget that!
