Re: Hospital AGAIN! But you'll never guess why!

Hello Denise,

I have friends who are teachers and my understanding, at least in Indiana, is that teachers have a union. Perhaps your union rep should have a conversation with your HR drone. It does sound like she is violating your rights under the ADA provision. I would hope that your Principal would go to bat for you as well especially if you have worked in that district for awhile. You strike me as a teacher who would be beloved by her students and parents. Wonder what the parents would say/do if they found out you were being treated this way? Would be interesting if this somehow leaked out. Take good care of yourself during this time. And let's hope your state has a teacher's union.

Take care,

Jackie

So sorry Denise. I hope you will be on the mend soon.
Actually it sounds like something I would do. I am still on the mend from compression fractures in my back in July 2012. Be sure to get some good PT after you recover from surgery. Let's hope the rest of the year will be problem free as far as our health goes.
Take good care of yourself.

Denise,

Try this link to Patient Advocate.org. They may have info or be able to offer assistance in your case. I have not worked with them but they are one of the resources Joe wanted included on our Financial and Legal Resource page.

Good luck and it is TOTALLY unfair you have yet another issue to deal with!

Re: Hospital AGAIN! But you'll never guess why!

I cannot believe they would rather force you into the long term disability situation rather than a few extra days leave for medical care. How does that benefit anyone at all, including them? I'm with KDR in that I would get an attorney to write up a letter. Those well placed letters do wonders. You didn't mention if they have been able to get your pain under control. Is it feeling any better? Sending lots of prayers and positive energy and white light to getting that pain under control.

Hi Denise,

I know a recently retired lawyer who had breastcancer herself. Could I forward your story to her and ask her for her advice?

In a hurry, but no less concerned about your present predicament. Hope the pain will be gone soon!

Love

Re: Hospital AGAIN! But you'll never guess why!

Jimney Crickets! Denise I'm so sorry you are in so much pain. I pray the surgery will go well and you will be soon rid of the aweful pain.

I don't know if this will help you so here it goes anyway. I once worked in a class room as a parapro for three months for a teacher who broke her arm and she couldn't do any of the phisical part of the job. She had used up her days and couldn't afford not to work. So with a dr. note saying she could go back to work if she had help the district had to give her a para. for 3 months. she literally and figuretively sat in a big chair and never got up. I did everything. I am not qualified in any way shape or form to teach a class. I do not have a degree in teaching. There I was teaching a class. I sure hope and pray God opens another window for you soon. You know you and your family are always in my prayers. Gods blessings to you my friend. Nancy

Re: Hospital AGAIN! But you'll never guess why!

Okay,
So first, thanks for all your support! You guys are my rocks! And thanks for agreeing with me that I'm being unfairly and quite frankly hatefully, by my HR dept. That helps make it hurt a little less,

And thanks to all of you who have sent links to legal resources . I know it will likely cost me a fortune to fight all of this...just what my family doesn't need just now, with the 90 unpaid days hanging over me like a blade. But if I don't fight it, my family won't be taken care of when someday - a long, long, time from now - I'm not around to do it. I just hope I can find the BEST, most informed, and RUTHLESS cancer advocate/employment attorney in the Delaware Valley. I don't just want to win this for me and my family, I want to make a big enough splash that no one else around here ever has to spend a day crying over this crap...when they need all their energy to beat cancer...and in my case the ailment du jour! I wasted hours stressing about this yesterday. Literally, hours. When I should have been focused on the first surgery and recovering from that so I can have the next one in a week or so.

The HR director will not respond to my emails except to give me her cell number and ask me to "call her". We are NOT friends. The only time she has ever insisted we talk, rather than communicate in writing is when she's up to something and doesn't want a paper trail. Again, I say...what a %&*&$!!

Sorry, friends I'm rambling again.
Keep praying for healing and calm, please. (and a resolution that allows my children to eat more elaborate meals that macaroni and hotdogs till they reach adulthood and can pay their own way!)
Love to all of you!
Denise

Re: Hospital AGAIN! But you'll never guess why!

Okay,
So a quick update. Leaving this hospital sometime today. Hoping to get in to see a back specialist at Penn sometime today or tomorrow.

If it could be someone who's professional goal is to get into the Guinness Book for fastest, most pain-free repair of lumbar disks...well...so much the better for me!!

Please, keep praying friends...I'm so scared that when I leave the hospital, the pain will rush back in like a tsunami. I'm not sure how much of that "quality" of pain a person can handle without going round the bend.

Love and hugs to all!
Denise

Lots of prayers headed your way. Yay for leaving the hospital. Keep up on the pain medication. It is so much easier to keep the pain under control than get it back under control. Calm, serene and peaceful thoughts headed your way.

Re: Hospital AGAIN! But you'll never guess why!

Denise,
I am thinking about you and praying for a great result for your back. I understand the crazy pain of a disk crashing down on a nerve. Worst pain I ever experienced in my life...and us BC survivors have been through our share of pain. Keep the faith...your such a strong lady and have your beautiful family to pull you through this. As you are recovering from your surgery...go get em! Pursue all avenues for a resolution to this human resource nightmare you are experiencing. Love and hugs to you and your family as you once again face this challenge.

Re: Hospital AGAIN! But you'll never guess why!

Oh - so glad you are able to move to the next step of getting on with a neurosurgeon/spine specialist. I was SO GLAD to improve enough to leave the hospital, so know your relief.
You have a diagnosis, so there should be no time wasted getting you on a top surgeon's schedule. For me, the surgery was the LEAST painful, or even bothersome compared to the initial blast of crippling pain. My wish for you is that your surgery will be a breeze, and you will have a smooth recovery.
Wanted to let you know that my surgeon was being very careful with me to avoid reherniating, which the nurses said happens often. With that warning, and my surgeon saying that I could not start physical therapy until after my SIX WEEK checkup, I took care to follow the post-op instructions.

Love and soft hugs!

Oh Denise - such rotten luck! I am glad you are back home and that things are moving in regard to your back. Hope the pain doesn't return in full force, that your HR person gets her comeuppance and that you can swap the hot dogs for fillet steak in the near future.
Best wishes.... Pam
