Scanxiety
Does the worry ever end? I have a sensation on the right corner of my mouth, that feels sort of burning and tingling. Of course I asked Dr. Google and found some scary stuff regarding a facial nerve, originating from the brain stem that may be impeded by a tumor. I have a call into my onc which of course will lead to a brain MRI, which of course will lead to scanxiety. I was just starting to take a breather...since I am 3 years and 4 months out with no issues so far. Just looking for some words of encouragment, anyone have these symtoms that led to a brain met diagnosis?

The worry never seems to end! I had a pain in my right kidney area which let to me wondering if my pants were too tight...or perhaps the seat belt was too tight? The next day I felt worse...and Dr.Google found a condition that included tight pants causing pain and numbness. Aha...yea, I was starting to have an area of numbness, burning and itching. The next day, after consulting with Dr. Google I knew it was a tumor in my neck compressing the nerve. A few more days of very uncomfortable numbness and itching on my right side it was making it uncomfortable to sleep.
Today I finally broke down and cancelled my appointment with Dr. Google...and went to see.my primary care doc. Even her nurse knew what I had...when the doc came in she listened to my tale of woe. And told me the dreaded words... I have SHINGLES.
What??? SHINGLES??? Go figure...Dr. Google must have slept through that lecture!!!

Susan! Shingles! Ouch big time! Prayers for you to heal quickly. You and Jill had me laughing outloud over "Dr. Google!" I have visited that quack too many times to count, though I will say that he has talked me down off the wall more times than I can count, too. Good luck, Jill. My bet is it will turn out to be nothing, but you are right to investigate it fully.

2/19/14 started Navelbine, Perjeta, & Herceptin combo.
5/2-5/4/14 hospitalized with very high liver function numbers, plus skin and eyes are yellow, plus urine is orange. Feel ok, so doctor not sure if liver failing due to cancer, chemo, or infection. Hospital gets numbers to go down and sends me home. MRI done in hospital reveals cancer shrinking - praise God!
5/6/14 - 5/8/14 hospitalized with no white blood cell count. Released when they go back up, @ 6 days after doctor gave me a neulasta shot.
5/16/14 - informed blood cultures done in hospital are back and that I contracted hepatitis e. Have to take ribavirin (anti-hep med) until liver function numbers are back to "normal" before re-starting chemo. Will probably go on veliparib and temodar this time.
5/26/14 - my birthday - GI doctor informed me that the hepatitis e was completely gone - I didn't even need the anti-viral meds! This is a miracle from God!
5/28/14 - started veliparib and temodar (compassionate use)
8/18/14 MRI shows 90% growth in liver tumors
8/20/14 start Perjeta, Herceptin, & Navelbine. Thanking & giving Glory to God for each moment.
9/22/14 - 9/24/14 Hospitalized with 102.2 fever and neutropenia
11/13/14 ER for high fever and fast heart rate. Got both down with IV antibiotic and fluids. Sent home same night. Thank You, Lord!
12/2/14 MRI shows progression in liver. Grateful to God that I still feel good.
12/11/14 Simulated SIR-spheres. Successful. Real thing (1st lobe) scheduled for the 23rd. Also starting Xeloda on 22nd for 2 weeks because it's synergistic with the spheres.
12/23/14 SIR-spheres in left lobe of liver. On Xeloda 12/22/14 - 1/4/15.
1/7/15 Receiving Perjeta & Herceptin while awaiting next course of action.
2/9/15 SIR-spheres in right lobe of liver. On Xeloda for 2 weeks (started 2/8). Still on Perjeta & Herceptin. Don't know what's next for me. :-)
3/25/15 Final read on MRI report - there are new and multiple lesions in both lobes of liver. Sigh. Praise God I've made it this far!
4/1/15 Started Gemzar & Herceptin. 1st week G&H, 2nd week G only, 3rd week off. Thank You, Lord, for this option.
4/15/15 Labcorp - liver enzymes in 200's. Appointment 4/22 with oncologist to discuss. Also, "radiation recall" in previously treated area? Very itchy. Need to discuss.
4/22/15 Enzymes came down. Received reduced dose of Gemzar only. No herceptin. Will get labs at lapcorp next two weeks since taking break for vacation purposes. Treat radiation area.
5/9/15 ER for severe abdominal pain. Constipation. Sent home with meds and advice to follow up with oncologist regarding jaundice and bilirubin.
5/11/15 Hospitalized for rising bilirubin and jaundice. CT scan reveals larger and more constricting tumors in liver.
5/13/15 Met with my oncologist. Bilirubin came down. If still down by Monday, I'll get chemo. If not, than I guess I'll see you all in Heaven. Praise God. Please pray, pray, pray.
5/18/15 Bilirubin jumped up. Trying lowered dose of Ixempra, with Herceptin. Oncologist is surprised that I'm functioning so well, given the high bilirubin. I have anywhere from 2 weeks - 2 months to live.

I'm amazed how many times I notice some new complaint and immediately think "cancer." But I never thought of Dr. Google!
I was consulting Dr. Google last night about lung nodules. He/she can be helpful, but it's necessary to filter and evaluate.

6/8/14 PET "mixed," with no new lesions, and everything but lower lungs improving. My breathing is better.

11/22/16 Begin Eribulin and Herceptin. H every 3 weeks. E two weeks on, one week off.
3/6/17 Scan shows progression in lungs. Bone met a little better.
3/23/17 Lung biopsy. Tumor sampled is ER-, PR+ (5%), HER2+++. Getting Herceptin and Perjeta as a maintenance treatment.

Brain MRI scheduled for Monday, should have the results Monday afternoon or Tuesday. Its a very minor sensation of burning just in the corner of my mouth on the right side. Feels like I have hot sauce on the lip area there. Let the scanxiety begin!!!

About 7 years ago I had my onc schedule a brain MRI just to be sure even though I had no symptoms. To get it approved by insurance he said, "you have headaches, right?". But I was symptomless but wanted one "because". I was still a train wreck. So I understand. As an aside, did you ever suffer from mouth sores. Sometimes your mouth wants to produce a cold sore and the tingling is a symptom whether or not one actually erupts. I have not had one in years and years but it is a sign for me.

I agree with Becky's suggestion. Your description sounds like what I experience when a cold sore is approaching When we have had cancer the tendency is to always fear the worst but we are still susceptible to "everyday' ailments too ( although I think we should get a free pass!) Often it's best to think of the simplest answer first, rather than the scary one
Let us know what happens. But don't borrow trouble

thanks Becky...I hope I break out into the biggest cold sore ever! I have not had one in years either. The biggest thing that scared me is when I reported the symptom to my onc she was very quick to order the brain scan. I think that scared me more than anything. Well, it might be nice to get a look at the brain at this juncture anyway! For the last year and a half, I really have not worried that much, normal aches and pains etc. This is just such a weird symptom...I felt compelled to report it.
Thank you for the encouraging words everybody! I just found out this morning I am going to be a Grandma for the first time...so I need to be around for a long time!!!

Dr. Google is ONLY helpful when you already have a diagnosis and want to look up something in regards to it, or ask for definitions. He is a horrible diagnostician and is wrong most of the time. He will always give you what you are looking for, because the only search terms you know are the ones that come up with cancer. Unless you have enough medical knowledge to look for all conditions regarding that nerve, you probably are always going to find ones that involve cancer. Plus it knows your search history and pulls from stuff you have searched for before, so cancer is going to pop up more often.
So my best advice -try not to consult him, you get what you pay for.  Wait until you are told something, then do you research.
As for the worry - as a person who has mets, I can't answer your question. I would think that at some point you have to realize that you are likely in the category of healthy and are going to be one of those who live out their lives having had cancer. Women like Betty Ford, one of the first people to go public with the disease, lived her natural lifespan and most women do - just plan to be among them, I guess.
I don't have scanxiety much now, even though I have liver mets. I can't tell you why but I had made peace with the bad news so I am only pleased when I get good news rather than disappointed when I get bad news. (I'm stable now)

04/03/2013: CT shows 50% regression in tumor, so am starting back on Gemzar with dose reduction, staying with perjeta/herceptin/zometa. Can't argue with success!
05/09/2013: Discussing SBRT with Radiology due to inability of bone marrow to recover from chemo.
06/07/2013: Fiducial placement for SBRT
07/03/2013: Chemo discontinued, on Perjeta, Herceptin and Zometa alone
07/25/2013: SBRT (gamma knife) begins
08/01/2013: SBRT completed
08/15/2013: STABLE! continuing with Perjeta, Herceptin, Zometa
06/18/2014: ***** NED!!!!***** continuing with Perjeta, Herceptin, Zometa
01/29/2014: Still NED. continuing with Perjeta, Herceptin. Zometa lowered to every 3 months instead of monthly.
11/08/2015: Progression throughout abdomen and lungs. Started TDM-1, aka Kadcyla. Other meds discontinued. Remission was nice while it lasted.
5/27/18: Stable. Kadcyla put me right back in the barn. I have two teeny spots on my lungs that are metabolically inactive, and liver is clean.
I’m beating this MFer. I was 51 when this started and had two kids, 22 and 12. Now I’m 60. My oldest got married and trying to start s family. My youngesg graduates from Caltech this June. My stepdaughter gave me grandkids. Life is fantastic.

July 24, 2013: "Infected" Right Nipple and benign cyst removed, pathology report revealed Paget's, DCIS, and ILC 1.25 cm, ER+/Pro+/HER2 equivocal, Grade 2 under benign cyst, previous diagnostic mammo/ultrasound said I was perfectly healthy in both breasts.
Aug 18, 2013: MRI report says Left breast is perfectly healthy "consistent with previous studies".
Sept 2013: I insist on a bilateral mastectomy anyway. Too nervewracking to let left breast remain with higher risk after 3 cancers in right, nipple in right is already gone anyhow.
Sept 18, 2013: Bilateral mastectomy, 11 right nodes removed, ALL negative BUT -- ER+/PRO+/HER2+ tumor, 1.0 cm, Grade 2 found in a piece of "grossly unremarkable" breast tissue from prophylactic mastectomy of left breast, no nodes removed.
Oct 25, 2013: 13 left side nodes removed, ALL negative, Stage 1 across the board, NO RADS needed, YAAAAY! Port also installed.
Nov 25, 2013 Begin 6 rounds TCH.
March 10, 2014 Just finished 6th and LAST Chemo today, YAAAAAY!
March 24, 2014 Echocardiogram to make sure I'm still good for Herceptin every 3 weeks.
March 31, 2014 Echo results NORMAL, first Herceptin all by itself. Now if only my eyes would stop streaming from the Taxotere ... :)
April 21, 2014 Started Arimidex and therapy for "mild" lymphedema in left hand and arm
May 2014 Therapy completed, I have sleeves and gloves for both arms, a Flexi touch lymph pump to hook up to for an hour every day, and I've become an arm bandaging expert. :)
June 2014 Begin Fosamax to prevent osteoporosis; bone scan revealed osteopenia

Dec 4, 2014 My right thigh muscle has been extra achy for days ... I discover a blister rash cluster on the side of my right thigh while taking a shower. Port appointment cancelled until Dec 17, my doc is working me in tomorrow afternoon to see me and the rash. My muscle at least feels less achy.
Dec 5, 2014 Yep, I have shingles. Boo! I start acyclovir and also have a prescription for a painkiller just in case for over the weekend.

January 2016 Shingles again and this time it started where my left breast (where the hidden HER2+++ tumor was!) used to be. My onc nurse got me a same day appointment to see my doc when I called and told her I had a rash on the site. The antiviral meds are working once again, though, so that is good news. :)

Hi Jill, as soon as I read your post (before reading a few others with the same thought I had) is that it sounds like a classic whopper of a cold sore brewing. That's how it feels for me on the odd occasion I have had one.
Just remember to breathe (that is such good advice as I often forget to breathe, and that leads to all sorts of problems for me at times).
Ann, I understand what you are saying about scanxiety becoming easier - I think that comes with living with long term Stage IV disease.

dx Dec 2000 dcis 2.5cm clear sentinel node, ER/PR- Her-2+
lumpectomy, 6 cycles AC, 6 weeks rads
October 2007 three x 2.5cm lung mets. 8 months Taxol, started Herceptin and continue. Significant reduction in lung mets.
June 2011 3cm x 4cm liver tumour. Started Abraxane and continue with Herceptin.
November 2011. Finished with Abraxane, continue with just Herceptin. Liver tumour now reduced to 15mm x 12mm. Lung tumour now 10mm x 0.5mm
February 2012. Scans show everything stable, and brain scan clear.
July 2012. PET/CT scans show I'm in remission - no active cancer!
]Dec CT brain cllear, lungs stable, liver tumour has increased to 20mm. PET scans showed active liver met and active lung thinglet, and possible bone met.
Jan 2013 recommence Abraxane, continue with Herceptin.
June 2013 finish Cycle 6 Abraxane, continue with Herceptin. 30% reduction in liver tumour, everything stable.
December 2013. CA15-3 on rise.
February 2014. PET and CT scans show single liver tumour has increased to 35mm. No other activity.
March 2014. Planned for SBRT for liver met, but couldn't have treatment as tumour too close to bowel. Continue Herceptin.
April 2014. Surgeon advises that I am a good candidate for liver resection, so will have operation early May (after camping holiday). Tumour now 44mm x 29mm.
May 7, 2014. Two liver tumours surgically removed. Third of liver removed, and gall bladder. Am I NED?May 2014. Pathology of tumour shows it's now ER+ (95% staining).
June 2014. CA15-3 has decreased to 18 from a pre-surgery reading of 59!
June 2014. Started Femara, continue with Herceptin.
July 2014. Stop Femara due to severe Osteoporosis. Commence Tamoxifen, continue Herceptin. Waiting to hear if I can have Aclasta infusion.
August 2014. CA15-3 has decreased further to 12 - YAY!
October 2014. Aclasta infusion for Osteoporosis. November 2014, CA15-3 decreased to 11. Scans of liver all clear, something new showing up on lung, but just watching at the moment.
November 2015. Started SBRT on solitary lung met.
November 2015. Bone density scan showed very good improvement so back on Femara - yay!
December 2016. 6 treatments of SBRT radiation on lung. Seems to have had some effect.
June 2016. CA15-3 still stable and low at 9.
June 2016. Started subcutaneous Herceptin replacing infusion.
Jan 2017. LVEF dropped to 46%. Stopped Herceptin.
Feb 2017. Started ACE Inhibitor and BETA Blocker. Still off Herceptin.
Aug 2017. Two new mets - Portacaval lymph node and mediastinal lymph node.
Aug 2017. Blood tests show extremely elevated liver enzyme levels. Many tests to investigate.
Sept 2017. Portacaval lymph node blocking liver bile duct causing liver enzyme and Bilirubin problems.
Oct 2017. 8cm stent inserted into liver bile duct. Procedure caused pancreatitis, and hospitalised for 3 days. Liver enzymes improving rapidly.
Nov 2017. Commenced 4 weeks of radiation on Portacaval lymph node. 5 week break before chemo.
Jan 2018. CT scan. 11 new small liver mets, and new superclavical lymph node med.
Jan 2018. Start Kadcyla. CA15-3 426.
Apr 2018. First scans since starting Kadcyla. All tumours reducing. CA15-3 dropped to 30 from 426.
Dec 2019. Still on Kadcyla, but two small brain mets have been treated in the past month with SRS. CA15-3 stable for 12 months at 11.

Oh I love that, Becky, I'll have to remember that one ... I am sitting here in my pjs with that yucky chemo taste in my mouth, etc etc almost halfway to midcycle of chemo #5, and this just made me laugh, thank you!!
