Oopherectomy vs. Lupron shots?

Hi everyone! I'm trying to decide if I should have an oopherectomy in April after the radiation is finished or have lupron shots and wait until the fall when the kids go back to school. I don't know how I'll feel after the surgery and how the hot flashes etc. will be. I"m a stay at home mom and I don't want to have the surgery right before summer break if it will be hard. Anyone have any advice?

Hi - I was able to have ovaries removed laparoscopically, which was REALLY easy - maybe 2 or 3 days of soreness. But there is always a risk (usually 1-2%, I think) that they may be unable to do it that way, in which case it could be a six-week recovery. I'd say check with your doctor, and weigh your chances! Good luck.

Beth, I had an ooph and I can honestly tell you its an easy surgery. Of course there are always risks with *any* surgery...so discuss this with your GYN. But I was in and out the same day and the pain was very minor.
But I was moving around the next day and by day three pretty much back to normal. It was a piece of cake compared to other surgeries I've had. You might have some soreness in your shoulders or neck that same day after surgery due to the gas they pump in you. But thats it. Its a quick recovery so don't worry about that.

Beth: I had an ooph done laproscop. and it was very easy, I was back to work in 1 week. I haven't experienced any hot flashes either. I am pleasantly surprised. It was the easiest thing I've done this whole ordeal! Good luck

Hi Beth,

I have to join the chorus of the pro ooph crowd. I too was fortunate to have the procedure done laparoscopically (sp?). I have two children and was down for about two days. In fact, I had the surgery (outpatient) done on a Friday and was doing laundry by Sunday; worked a half day that Monday. Sometimes medical science is too good! Seriously, I was a bit sore for a time but it was completely managable. I hope this helps.

Thanks everyone! My doctor said she could do it laprascopically so that is great. I went today for my CT/Simulation at radiology and start next Thursday. Seems pretty good compared to the chemo and surgery. Thanks again!
