Re: Joe passed on this evening

I took two days off reading posts here and just found out. The loss of Joe (your father) leaves me breathless. Though I never met him in person, through his dedication and care, he is in a small group of men who have truly impacted my life for the positive. In my mind it did not occur we would lose him.

Blessings to your family in this hard time.

Melanie

Re: Joe passed on this evening

Dear Christine, Deborah and Danielle,
I logged on tonight at the urging of a friend and I am stunned by this kick-in-the-gut news about your Joe. I thank this kind man for helping me climb out of the deep dark bucket of despair when I was first diagnosed with metastatic disease ... 6 years ago. I wish fervently I could have done something for him.
In the corner of my mind is a memory of the year I joined Joe and Christine at an ASCO conference. I was struck by the kind concern Joe had for Christine; asking doctors for their opinions, Joe was ever hopeful and optimistic...and clearly in that deep kind of love with Christine often yearned for but not so often achieved.
I loved hearing Christine's story when we had the good fortune of being warmly welcomed by both Joe and Christine at dinner, when I flew from Connecticut to Seattle for the vaccine trial. Who could ask for more hope than that?
Joe; you are in the loving arms of scores of Her2 angels; I have no doubt they are all tenderly escorting you on this labor and delivery into new life, with joy in their hearts.
Christine, Deborah and Danielle: such a wrenching loss for you; Joe who stood shoulder to shoulder with Christine; indeed with all of us; only to have him torn from your life. Is there condolence for you knowing how much he was loved by so many?
May God's love help you find peace as you mourn the loss of this man who clearly loved you all so very much.
Love Kim from CT

Re: Joe passed on this evening

Copying Danielle's message from her new thread: Information About Joe's Memorial and Our Family's Wishes so all will get an e-mail notification:

First off, I just wanted to thank all of you so much for your support and kindness. That's one of the best parts of this message board, and Dad would be so proud to see just how warm you've been to our family during such a sad time no matter what distance stands between all of us. The camaraderie this website and other support groups have achieved is so inspiring, and I know Dad was glad to be a part of that.

The visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 17th from 5 - 8 PM at Eternal Hills Mortuary in Oceanside. The memorial will be at 10 AM on Wednesday, August 18th. I was able to get our family priest to officiate for us, and I have to say, the place he'll be buried is so incredibly beautiful, right beside the historical Mission San Luis Rey overlooked by a statue of Our Lady of the Assumption and underneath a gorgeous 'fountain' of cascading roses. It's such a beautiful sanctuary, and I know he would have loved it too.

Also, I know a lot of people have been asking about flowers, gifts, etc., and after talking that over with my sister and my mother, Christine, we all decided it would be best to request donations to the organization instead.

You should be able to access a way to pay online through our Make a Donation link on the front page. However, if you'd like to send a donation or even just a card with a few words for our family, you can send it to our address:

6973 Mimosa Drive
Carlsbad, CA 92011

Thank you once again for all of your love. I'm hoping some of his more local HER2 'sisters' can attend one of the services this week. I know my mom would really love to see you.

As Daddy always signed, 'Love and light'.

-- Danielle

Danielle,
I am so sad for you and your family. Joe was so helpful to me at a time when I had lots of questions and no answers. He made this website the most gentle loving breast cancer support site I have found.

So shocked. I read it yesterday, and came back today to make sure it wasn't a dream. I feel like I lost my Father all over again.

Although I've never met Joe or Christine, I'm here to tell you what a difference they made in my life and in my treatment. I hate to think what it would have been like had I not had this website to go to for advice, venting and comfort. Joe made that possible.

My deepest sympathies to you, Christine, and your children and all of your family.

Danielle, I am so sorry to hear about the news to your father. Please know you and your entire family are in my thoughts in prayers.

I was diagnosed young and your dad had always given me encouragment and support throughout this journey. I am thankful to him and your mom for all of their work in giving the HER2 community a voice. He was truly and angel.

Re: Joe passed on this evening

I'm so stunned and sad. I've been away from the Board for a week and when I logged on yesterday, I could hardly believe what I was reading. It's taken me another day to find the words...
I was only 33 years old when I was diagnosed 8 years ago, Stage IV with this disease. I was lost and very scared and this community- created and nurtured by Joe, inspired by Christine- took me into their arms and every day since have offered me guidance, courage, hope, knowledge and an endless supply of comfort and friendship. What gift.
Where would any of us be without each other, under Joe's watchful eye?
To Christine, Danielle, your family and family of friends, may you find peace in knowing how much Joe and you have all impacted my and all of our lives and the legacy you've created will live on with each of us continuing to offer guidance, courage, hope and knowledge to one another and the new members who will come to walk this path.

God bless~

Re: Joe passed on this evening

This is one of the reasons that I don't visit the site as often as I should. It seems like every time I log in we have lost another warrior to this horrible cancer.

I am so very saddened and shocked to hear this, as I, like the rest had no idea Joe was fighting it as well.

When I was first diagnosed and found this website, I made one post and asked if it was ok and/or proper for a male to be posting here. Joe was the first one that responded to me, welcomed me, and made me feel very comfortable in discussing my situation so I could learn as much as possible about Her2.

Other than that, I'm really at a loss for words and can only add my condolences as the rest here have. My heart goes out to you and your family. He truly was a great man for what he did for all of us here. He was also remarkable with his endeavors while fighting his own battle while keeping it secret from us.

I have such huge tears and a large lump in my throat.....this is such a shame.

God bless Joe and his family.

Doug

Re: Joe passed on this evening

Christine, Deborah, and Danielle,

I am heartbroken for you all. Your father, whom I never had the pleasure to meet in person, was such a wonderful source of inspiration, hope, compassion, and knowledge. He gave so much of himself to those of us on this site. I will never forget how he reached out to me when I first found this site and started posting. His love for you girls was plainly obvious in all he did and all he wrote. I am holding you all in my heart as you grieve for this incredible loss.

Joe, you were one of a kind and you truly made a difference in the lives of so many. I am grateful for having known you - if only on line. May you rest in peace, dear Angel.

Re: Joe passed on this evening

Dear Christine, Danielle and Deborah,
I can't find a word to describe my sadness. I met Joe and Christine in 2005 in San Diego. I can never forget his kind and caring face.
Love and hug to you all.

Re: Joe passed on this evening

Christine, Danielle and the rest of Joe's family,

My thoughts are with you.

I want to echo the appreciation for the work that Joe did to help us in the Her2 community. It was such a comfort that in a time of crisis I had the Her2 board to go to for help and support.

I am so sorry that you have lost such a wonderful husband and father.
