scar tissue or another cancer?

I just returned from the Surgeon follow up visit and am sitting here in panic! There is a small lump on the scar that my Onc. and her nurse felt before but weren't concerned about. I had my surgery last January (clear margins, 3 benign nodes removed, stage 1)The Surgeon wants to do a guided core biopsy on it and I am devastated thinking I might be facing this horrible disease again so soon. With a lumpectomy, chemo, radiation, Herceptin, Femara - how horribly intense it must be to overcome all those drugs. Have any of you had similar experiences with lumpy scars?

Hey...your surgery was in January 2008? I would think it highly unlikely that this is anything other than scar tissue. Did they do an ultrasound, or other imaging (other than a mammo)?

I have a place on/under my scar that showed up in February 2008 (my surgery was in March 2007). My surgeon (who also does my mammo/US combos) said it was scar tissue. I just had another mammo/US earlier in the month, and he said, "Yep. Still scar tissue."

Let me know how you are doing. I know the fear can be unbearable, but I have a feeling they are just being cautious for you.

Take care,

I noticed something similar, a hard lump on my lumpectomy site about a year after surgery and rads. My Dr sent me back to my surgeon who said it was definatly scar tissue from the op/rads and said he did'nt feel I needed more testing although they did tell me to watch for any changes.
That was about two years ago and it's still there and has'nt changed at all so I hope what you're dealing with is the same thing.

thanks for the quick replies! I'm sure you both relate to the instant panic that overcomes us with any thought of a new cancer. I have such a high level of medical anxiety. I actually passed out after a visit with my first Oncologist( they had to call 911!) He did not have people skills and after that episode I transferred to another wonderful Oncologist in Chicago. I had seen him a few times and was not getting my questions answered plus he made me so nervous with his vague answers. I realize that we need to feel good about our medical team. I have become a little more pro-active but am finding it hard to put cancer into more of the background. Thank goodness for this website!

Alyce, I just had a 4CM area removed from my mastectomy scar line in September. It did light up on my PET/CT Scan that I had. It had been over 3 yrs since my original surgery.

It was perfectly fine. Yes, it can be very scary.
